It is the wisest decision I ever made. Before long, my entire family was training together. Now I am 50 years old and everybody in my family has benefited from the life skills we learned. The Sensei is one of the senior instructors in the International Shotokan Karate Federation. Not only is the Sensei top notch, he has a group of assistant instructors that know the art and teach it to exact standards. The dojo philosophy is one that is in keeping with the disciplines and culture of Japanese Karate. My personal experience there has been one of constant encouragement but I have also been challenged to push myself farther than I felt I could go. At this dojo, the new students train along side the advanced students. Because of this the advance students never forget the basics and the beginners learn to respect themselves and each other because of the examples set before them. All of whom have a great deal of knowledge and experience. Mr. Pohle is a seventh degree Dan who also serves on the technical coomettee for ISKF which is an international karate association. I find the atmosphere in the dojo similar to that of a large family. The times offered for the classes is convenient and the fees are very reasonable. I also like that you don't have to sign a year long contract unlike other martial art schools.

I do not care to go to the Hampton location. Certain coaches I feel the delivery of instruction is about being in power instead of genuinely teaching and building their students up. I am very pro discipline and teem building being prior military....our kids need discipline! I understand expecting discipline and helping the next generation not be so soft. It's why I signed my kid up for Karate. But with leadership, there comes balance in leading without being so power hungry. Some of the talking down to students is not necessary. Expectations to do their best is necessary but some need to work on their delivery to get the level of respect they feel they deserve. To lead you must know when to fallow.

For the past couple of years, our nephew and his other cousin have been students of Master Kim and Mrs. Candice. We've watched his levels of confidence and respect increase through the program(s). It was this building of character that encouraged us to put our own daughter into the studio. While martial arts is the root idea of the studio, the bigger picture is the development of the student- building them up, while utilizing physical and mental ideologies meant to nurture preexisting positive traits and improve that which is lacking. Herein, students are assessed and tested fairly and given every opportunity to succeed. They are treated like real people- as individuals working towards individual goals, in a team style environment. We've seen our daughter grow a ton in this studio. Her continued interest in the program has been the biggest surprise- she's young and usually easily distracted, but she WANTS to be involved in Hapkido! She's excited to go and wants to better herself. Her focus is improving and the physical outlet speaks for itself in these times! It should be noted that recently, Master Kim announced that he, himself has needed to step down due to health and family concerns. Longtime 2nd in command "Mrs. Candice" has taken over the studio and is already proving that she has the will and ability to continue Master Kim's teachings and the ideology of Hapkido to the the next generation of students. Apart from the obvious physical benefits, the curriculum has been all encompassing, including lessons in character and responsibility! Master Kim is really funny and cares a lot for his students. He knows how to engage them, and teach really valuable lessons beyond techniques and form.
