Not only was she a personality…read morematch, but it was obvious that helping and empowering pregnant women is her passion, and it shines through in everything she does. The uncertainty of military life, and our family being a few states away contributed to our original decision to search for a doula. I wanted to try for a natural birth, but knew that if my husband happened to be away and my family support team was still a flight away, it would be difficult. While the birth didn't quite go as I had planned (our little acrobat turned breech at 39 weeks), we were as prepared as we could have been. During our pre-natal visits Jenn talked about options and choices we may have whether the birth was natural or not and encouraged us to have a C-section plan prepped, in addition to our best case plan. Little did we know that would be necessary when the day finally came. Not only did Jenn provide the consistency I needed, but her emotional support and knowledge prior to, during, and after the birth was incredible. Her help didn't end when she left the hospital the day our daughter was born. She continues to provide post-natal support- for example, after a conversation about breastfeeding issues, she sent me additional resources to help solve a bad latch. Working with Jenn was a great decision for us and I highly recommend you consider her as your doula!

This is very, very basic birthing care, reserved best for if you have zero support structure…read more Before our birth, we were notified that there had been a change in employment. Jen and the new doula met with us prior to giving birth and that was pretty much the only contact we had prior to the main event (aside from the bills that came monthly). They went over the birth plan and left. You're billed for eight hours of labor so we waited to call them. When we did, the new doula showed up and it felt like he was there to just watch me give birth - no coping techniques, no suggestions, no coaching. My husband actively tried to help - get me in the tub, put me in the shower, rub my back, grab tools for me, etc. - and the doula mostly watched and assisted my husband in moving me from shower to bed or bed to tub. My husband ended up sending him home and not calling him back. We were billed for a postpartum follow-up (in addition to prenatal care and labor). We didn't bother getting in touch with them postpartum as my husband got quite a bit of time off but Jen contacted me a couple weeks later about the postpartum visit. It had been described as a one hour visit that could help to answer any questions, or even just hold baby while I threw lunch together (very vague). When Jen contacted me about a time I mentioned "I could really use help at this time" and my husband would be present for the time she suggested. She said that was okay because they were only stopping by to have me fill out a form.. She showed up while my husband and I were prepping dinner and was more annoying than anything. I'm kicking myself for not being more upfront on the review sheet she had me fill out. Overall, it was a waste of a lot of money ($850) and I would not recommend to anyone in the area.

When my birth plan took a detour at 36 weeks (breach) I was very heartbroken, but she was still very encouraging no matter how my baby decided to come. And baby decided to come early via emergency c/s. Alexandria was there for us right away. A couple of days after I was discharged, Alexandria came by our home to visit. With her memories, insight and retelling of my babies birth, I was able to reframe the experience in such a better light. Enough that I look back on it with just as much joy as if she came naturally! Even if I had known a c/s was necessary months prior, I still am glad I hired Alexandria. On top of her loving doula service, she also encapsulated the placenta. I can't explain how helpful the placenta was for my recovery. I had plenty of energy those first few weeks, my milk was flowing without effort, no sadness, and the salve she also made for my scar helped it heal great.

I was never really into yoga prior to this pregnancy (my first) but decided to give it a try as I read it can be very helpful in preparing for birth. I am SO glad I did and that I found Alexandria. She was kind, warm and encouraging throughout my classes with her, offering excellent suggestions to any issues that came up as well as lending an ear when I just needed to vent. She truly cares and it comes across in her practice. The class itself isn't difficult, she does a good job of modifying anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, but it also made my body stronger and more flexible. I always felt more relaxed and yet somehow also energized after her class. Additionally, the meditation which she incorporates into the class has been so helpful and I feel has really prepared me for natural birth. I have way more confidence in my body and myself now and I owe so much of that to Alexandria and her class.

These women are absolutely incredible. I found them in the last month of my pregnancy, and I'm so…read moregrateful I hired them. They offer prenatal visits, birth support, and postpartum visits. I hired them mostly for support during birth, but I ended up having a quick labor and a very challenging postpartum period. They were there for all of it in every way I needed them. Each woman brings a different set of skills to the table, but they all offer exceptional prenatal/labor/postpartum support. If you're considering hiring a doula for your birth, do yourself a favor and allow these women to help make it a beautiful experience.

Since you are reading this, I assume you have decided that a doula is a good idea for your birth…read more But if you are unsure, let me help you - the answer is YES. Especially if this is your first baby, after going through it, doing it without a doula is simply unimaginable. More on why below. Boulder and environs are not short on doulas as we learned when we moved here two months ago, seven months pregnant). Boulder Doula's Circle was recommended to us by a friend, but we were hesitant at first - like many health providers, on the "big day" you do not know which of the three doulas you might end up with. What if we had a favorite or were not crazy about one of them? This is intimate family stuff after all. However, after a 1:1 meeting and attending one of their monthly birth circle open houses at the Mamahood, we knew it was not just a case of being the "right fit" for us, but so much more. Suddenly we felt incredibly supported by these three very wise, very experienced, and very fun women. Each brings a unique set of skills to the table that will benefit you, not just on the big day, but throughout your pregnancy. Whether it was herbs, exercises, guiding us to other resources in the community, pre-natal home visits, or post-partum visits, Amanda, Rachel and April gave way more than we ever imagined. We were clueless, but by the time labor arrived we were super-educated, prepared, and confident. And the benefits of their support during labor cannot be overstated. Its difficult to express how grateful we are to these three. Another aspect of the team-doula approach: you can't end up in a situation where your one doula is on vacation or at another birth, leaving you in the lurch. Or, if, heaven-forbid, you have a marathon labor, you can get a hand-off, where one of them will come in as relief. A final thing to add - while we were on board with their approach, we saw other couples who had different ideas of what they wanted (or didn't want) and all three of the doulas were really non-judgmental and supportive. I suppose that in this world thats normal, but there was something genuine about it - its not that they were hiding what they really thought, but that they were truly not judging and wanted to do whats best for their pregnant mamas and their babies. In this incredible, exciting, daunting process of starting a family, I cannot stress how great it was to have these three as counsel. If this sounds too good to be true, message me and Ill be happy to share more details of our experience. Nikko
