Pieces presented are colorful, stimulating, thought provoking, and controversial. Close to several SoHo galleries, most of which are free, so you can make a full day of this area.

The museum kind of blends in with its surroundings - no sizable signs to make it stand out. But it's easy to find! The museum is on the smaller side but upon my visit in July 2025 featured two lovely exhibits that featured a variety of mediums - sculpture, video, painting, photography. There is a nice, clean gender-neutral bathroom. There appeared to be a few books for sale behind the check-in counter, but there is so gift shop. I would stop in again if I had the time, but I don't think this needs to be a necessity stop for someone just visiting NYC on a short trip.

I graduated from NYU in 2010, and I had never visited NYU's Grey Art Museum until last weekend when…read moreI visited with a friend. I was embarrassed (I'm sure I'd walked that block hundreds of times - how could I not have noticed it and visited at least once?), but then I learned that it only moved to this location on Cooper Square in 2024 after it closed its previous location and renovated this space. Whew. That being said, the Grey isn't large (really just one large room for a single exhibition). But - wow - the exhibition we saw (that ended on March 1) was incredible. "Make Way for Berthe Weill: Art Dealer of the Parisian Avant-Garde" surveyed the career of the "first woman modern art dealer," whom I had never heard of before! Berthe Weill purchased works by many modern artists very early in their careers (Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani), and the exhibition included 110 works, many of which were shown at her gallery in Paris before WWII. This exhibition was fascinating and included some incredible works. I also learned so much about her and her gallery, including what happened to her and the gallery during the War. The exhibition is next on its way to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and then off to Paris's Musée de l'Orangerie. So this really was a big deal of an exhibition. The museum is free to visit but they do suggest a donation as you enter. Other than a coat rack, some lockers for bags, bathrooms, and small area selling exhibition catalogues and other books, the Grey is really quite small. But this exhibition really packed a punch. I'll definitely keep my eye out for future exhibits to catch at the Grey.

My husband and I stopped by the David Zwirner galleries on 19th and 20th Streets last Saturday, and…read moreI was really glad we did. David Zwirner is one of the prestige art galleries in NYC. They have the 19th St and 20th St galleries in Chelsea, as well as a gallery on Walker Street and another on E 69th. We stopped by the gallery on W 20th to see "Gerhard Richter: Landschaften," which was incredible. Considering he's one of the foremost contemporary German painters, I've rarely seen his works in museum collections and exhibits, and I was thrilled to have a chance to see so many of his paintings in one gallery. (The exhibit closes on July 10 if you want to see it.) This David Zwirner gallery is a little larger than some of the others, but it's just as minimalist, clean, and beautiful as all David Zwirner galleries. Because David Zwirner has several galleries in these two blocks, his galleries are a great start for a gallery crawl of Chelsea. After our visit, I signed up for David Zwirner's email newsletter so I can keep up with future exhibits. The gallery's shows are museum-quality, and I look forward to visiting again in the future!

I've known about Donald Judd for a few years. I'm originally from Texas and learned about Judd…read morethrough this time in Texas - and have seen some of his art in Marfa. But I'd never visited this NYC site until this past Friday, when I took a tour of his house/studio at 101 Spring Street. So who was Judd? An American artist associated with minimalism (although our tour guide told us that Judd didn't like the term). He bought this property in 1968 and used it for his residence and studio even as he started spending more time in Marfa beginning in the 70s. The tour was fantastic. For about an hour and a half, our tour guide showed us several different levels of the property - the kitchen and dining room, the bedroom floor, another floor which served as a design and studio space, and more. The space is - shock shock - minimalist, but there's incredible art (his and others), furniture (including a dining room table he designed that I loooooooved), and other incredible touches. Our tour guide shared incredible stories about Judd and his family. He was informative, friendly, and funny, and the tour was a delight. If you're interesting in art (especially 20th century art and concepts) or architecture (the property has been renovated but in a way intended to preserve the property as it was during Judd's life and use of it) or are just looking for something to do in the City that is a little bit off the beaten path, definitely check out this tour!

Tour is not the listed 75-90 mins, it runs inside of 60 mins for the guided tour of the 5 floors, so it's a small commitment.

He came to NYC as a teen in1922, you will see a handful of his sculptures in some of the buildings and airport. This museum has three floors and a basement, museum store and a garden. Today's admission is free due to 4th of July celebration. Museum's gallery section is unique and different from one another. Visitors are not allowed to take flash photography and touch the sculptures or art display. However, being me I put that to the test. Hehehe. Staff were obsequious and professional. Free wifi. Plenty street parking. Admission is affordable. Overall, I had a nice experience discovering Isamu's art.

Also chess boards were set-up in different areas of the museum. There is a gift shop, and restrooms. Close to Socrates Park so was a long walk from the Steinway St-M R station. I normally wouldn't mind if it wasn't a muggy afternoon. The Broadway N W station is a bit closer, also some bus lines.

The museum is on top of a hill overlooking some greenery. With chimes & some colorful Tibetan flags waving in the air, it is easy to feel like i was transported to an exotic faraway land instead of Staten Island, NYC. Entrance is 5bucks, or free with Culture pass. We didn't have a hard time finding parking on a Saturday afternoon. They got clean bathroom & a few souvenirs for sale. I wish someone would invest some time, money, and love into this place…read more First off, i came on a friday and had to be let in by key, and had the whole place to myself. its small, and the exhibits are just upstairs. it was dirty from a previous art show opening. and by dirty i mean, leftover food still out..water still out...table clothes thrown around, etc. it was not impressive at all. i felt bad for the people who have their work here, because it seems like the staff or MGMNT just doesn't care. the name tags and info on the pieces are weird too, some are hand written and just taped on. Sad. I appreciated and enjoyed all the pieces i saw, the collection was great and from all walks of life. You will find people and art by non Russians here too. Downstairs is dark and dingy, again, just not taken care of at all. it seems they also use the premises for AA meetings, maybe they should put a curtain up to hide that since this is supposed to be an art museum?

I explain to her that I have a Groupon for admission and she says "Oh sorry we are actually closed for a private event tonight. Our last exhibit closed about two hours ago." Nowhere on their website did they state they were closed today. Even so, why were the doors open? I was so upset because I read such good reviews on this place. She did not even seem apologetic at all for this news. I sucked it up, took the L and went home and got a full refund from Groupon. This place seems unprofessional, do not bother!
