The museum is on the smaller side but upon my visit in July 2025 featured two lovely exhibits that featured a variety of mediums - sculpture, video, painting, photography. There is a nice, clean gender-neutral bathroom. There appeared to be a few books for sale behind the check-in counter, but there is so gift shop. I would stop in again if I had the time, but I don't think this needs to be a necessity stop for someone just visiting NYC on a short trip.

I wish someone would invest some time, money, and love into this place…read more First off, i came on a friday and had to be let in by key, and had the whole place to myself. its small, and the exhibits are just upstairs. it was dirty from a previous art show opening. and by dirty i mean, leftover food still out..water still out...table clothes thrown around, etc. it was not impressive at all. i felt bad for the people who have their work here, because it seems like the staff or MGMNT just doesn't care. the name tags and info on the pieces are weird too, some are hand written and just taped on. Sad. I appreciated and enjoyed all the pieces i saw, the collection was great and from all walks of life. You will find people and art by non Russians here too. Downstairs is dark and dingy, again, just not taken care of at all. it seems they also use the premises for AA meetings, maybe they should put a curtain up to hide that since this is supposed to be an art museum?

While I was there, Russian was the language of choice amongst guests, artists and the director/curator. Gangster. The art is all Russian based by Russian artists. But my friend and I visited the Ukrainian Museum last Saturday, and, other than beautiful building, there just wasn't much to see! Admission is $15 per person, but we were in and out in less than 20 minutes. There is a small gallery upstairs, which housed one single contemporary piece. The basement gallery has some pottery and ceramics, but is really just a hallway gallery on the way to some classroom space on that level. So that leaves the main level, which had a simple exhibit on Volodymyr Tatlin, a Ukrainian artist and founder of Constructivism, Even this exhibit had very few pieces or artifacts, but some signage about his life and works. The museum is beautiful, but there just wasn't much in it (especially for a $15 admission). I probably wouldn't visit again unless they had an exhibit I was very interested in, given the size.

An interesting museum located within the grounds of Snug Harbor. On my last visit I toured all the…read morebuildings solo and was really taken back by how well preserved this building was. Once greeted by staff and a suggested admission you could take to the multiple floors of art and historic architecture and notice many details tastefully renovated. This is evident when you peak through some of the windows of the buildings that haven't been renovated. The artifacts and art speak for themselves with some really interesting pieces that showcase life as seamen especially in the area when Snug Harbor was still active. Staten Island does have so much to offer and don't let those from other boroughs tell you otherwise! Take a day to tour these grounds and see everything!

Nicholas Roerich is a Russian painter mostly known for his paintings of the Himalayas. He was also…read moreknown as a mystic and explorer. This museum has around 200 Roerich paintings and drawings in storage and on display. The paintings are serene, mostly landscapes in blues, pinks, lilac colors. Some of his sketches and designs are also on display. The architecture of the building is beautiful too. On the first floor there is a narrow hallway (hard to navigate with others around) with his family history, though I wish the museum taught more about his political beliefs, spirituality, and views on mysticism and telecommunication, as they are quite interesting. That being said, they do mention these things on their comprehensive website. Entry is free, though donations welcome. Staff friendly. You can buy prints and postcards as well as books and trinkets in the gift shop. It's a little out of the way, but there are other nearby hidden gems in uptown, including The Hispanic Society museum and library. You can also take a trip to Riverside Drive and park and Grant's Tomb. All of those stops are free as well.

Even though his…read morestyle evolved over time, there was something very specific about his work that carried through. His paintings of the mountains in the Himalayas were a high point for me. The luminosity reflected in the mountains was powerful. They also have a lot of information about his engagement in mysticism and his efforts toward protecting cultural monuments and promoting peace. The museum itself is housed in a lovely old mansion down by Riverside Drive. We were also made to feel welcome by the person at the front desk who provided us a lot of information about the collection and the artist. One nice touch is that they have some beehives next to the museum and they sell the honey harvested from those hives in the museum. The honey is delicious!

I knew a good bit about Basquiat before this exhibit, but now I feel like I know him as a person…read morerather than a phenomenon. This exhibit, curated by his family from their personal collection, is a colorful multi-media feast for the eyes. It not only boasts lesser known or unknown works, but large works that take up entire walls. One of his last paintings, a gift to his father, is also on site. Some of his more overtly political pieces are there. There are recreations of his home living room and dining room, as well as his studio spaces. There are multiple video interviews/testimonies with his family members that share who he really was. What he meant to the people who really knew him. I was touched by the address/note book carried by his father with his goals written in it. I teared up at reading about how his father fought to protect Basquiat's legacy for his entire life. I also love how music and the 80s are woven into this space. There is a very cool "club" setup with TVs playing 80s music and showing candids from his clubbing days. It was the perfect end. I really loved this exhibit, and I'm glad I went. I paid the huge markup fee for the "skip the line," but I got there first (I arrived at 9:45 for a 10 AM time). A line did form behind me. The flow was pretty good and not too crowded. Please make your online reservation beforehand.

I'm a super fan of Basquiats work so I was head over hills when I heard this exhibition was coming to Chelsea. I had tickets for 1pm and the line was wrapped around the block. They have skip the line tickets but I don't think it's worth the price unless you're in a rush. The line moved quickly and they honored my 1pm ticket time. The exhibition and works of art was curated wonderfully allowing one to delve deep into the life of Basquiat even giving us a glimpse into his art studio, the apartment where he grew up, and countless audio visuals of his family speaking about how legendary he was and continues to be. The only con I had was the souvenir shop which was a bit under stocked, a tad corny, & very expensive. I live for souvenirs & couldn't wait to add to my already existing Basquiat collection but I wasn't impressed. The t-shirt I did want was $75 and living in the times of inflation, I couldn't bring myself to buy it. There wasn't much else to be desired. Forgive me for comparing this exhibition to Van Gogh's Immersive exhibition but they had amazing souvenirs as well as a cafe that was inspired by his works. I left with posters, cookies, an umbrella, pens, a cute tote that was reasonably priced and was able to eat lunch & dessert. Despite me not purchasing any souvenirs :( I still had a great time. The museum is on top of a hill overlooking some greenery. With chimes & some colorful Tibetan flags waving in the air, it is easy to feel like i was transported to an exotic faraway land instead of Staten Island, NYC. Entrance is 5bucks, or free with Culture pass. We didn't have a hard time finding parking on a Saturday afternoon. They got clean bathroom & a few souvenirs for sale. It is not for everyone though, whereas i find the place peaceful, rustic & beautiful perfect for an hour of contemplation, my husband find the place dull & the whole experience boring! I'f you're interested in Tibetan Art & Buddhisms, i recommend a visit to this place if you happen to be in Staten Island !
