I was visiting London and was aghast at how scorched my hair had become in Greece. After checking…read morereviews on Yelp, I emailed TOKITO salon overnight and was able to book in for lunch the next day. I walked in very cautious because with a stylist who is a stranger, a lot can be misunderstood - plus, I have hair almost to my waist, and after encountering some stylists who seemed to feel like a few extra unasked inches off was not a big deal (wut), I am scared of new stylists... but no need for fear, here! Hiro is very attentive and listens very carefully, and clearly had no agenda but to apply his expertise to my direction. Hiro cut my hair dry so I could make adjustments as we saw the progress; he was very conservative at my request, and didn't complain in the least when I reconsidered my asks twice and wanted to cut even more to address the dry ends. It was clear I could trust him not to overdo it, which made me trust his judgement. After the main trim, he did a fantastic wash and head massage, used the dryer on only medium heat (which is so much better for your hair!) and did a little more touch-up trimming once my hair was fully blown out. I walked out feeling like a whole new person, and am super grateful to not have haggard hair for my last few days in London!

The woman who ruined my hair never apologized and had a rude, offhand and indifferent attitude towards me. I have had my once healthy hair cut really short, my hair is a extremely dry, frizzy mess. To say I am extremely upset is an understatement. Even though I was given my money back and offered conditioning treatments, I feel that nothing can bring my lovely hair back. And to make it worse the hairdresser who ruined my haiwalked about singing and talking to her friend while I sat there devastated. No, no, Yelpers, I was all smiles. I'm sure this salon is open to everyone, but curly hair is where they really shine. Finding a salon that knows their way around curly hair is FANTASTIC because curly hair has it's own particular biological needs. Not only that, but it also varies in character from day to day, depending on the weather, the humidity, whether you washed it recently, its mood... I was so impressed with how much Maya wanted to understand my kind of curl; not just today, but also in general. She had me pull out my phone and troll through facebook to find good hair day and bad hair day pics. "Oh, I can get your hair curlier than that." she tells me when I show her a good hair day pic. And she totally did. This hair cut made me feel like WTF have I been doing with my hair all this time? It was shaped and layered and styled, and felt light and healthy. I also got some solid tips to take home: 1. Shampoo as little as possible - I knowwww but it feels so good when it's clean 2. Moroccan oil to hydrate - on it 3. A light, non-sticky mousse for hold - a welcome addition to the rotation 4. Diffuse dry upside down, or from below while reclined / laying down on the corner of your bed - oh, hello! Maya and I originally disagreed on the air dry vs diffuse dry debate. I'll fully admit that I'm low maintenance (lazy) and usually opt for an air dry, but I ::loved:: the way my curls came out after drying them ~60-70% of the way with a diffuser. I left feeling amazing and all for a reasonable price. I think I paid ~56 quid for top notch service.

I reaaaaaaaaaaaaally want to give this place a great review like everyone else. I mean... the place…read moreis totally old school barber style, great location, easy online booking, free drinks when you arrive.... but in the end, I think it really comes down to the hair stylist and the end result. After all, a free beer and cool chairs are only short-term, while your new head of hair is a long-term project :) With that said, I felt like I got more of a wham bam thank you man type of haircut. Sometimes I do enjoy a quickly now and then, but not so much for my haircut. The guy before went 15 minutes over into my appointment (totally cool and shows the stylist is about quality over quantity), but oddly enough, my cut only lasted 30 minutes. I actually wasn't sure if my haircut experience was over because I didn't get the hot towel treatment that others received. After I think the stylist was done with my hair, I asked to use the restroom quickly and if there was anything else left to do, we could do that once I was back. When I got back upstairs, the next customer was already in the chair and I didn't even get any acknowledgement, thanks, or even to finish the beer I had next to the sink! I awkwardly paid and promptly left... As for the haircut itself, I'm a pretty talkative and outgoing guy, but I couldn't really click with the person, whom I shall not mention, cutting my hair. But no matter, as long as the cut is good, I'm ok with small chit chat. Now, perhaps I have unrealistic expectations, but if I wanted to go to a place where they cut my hair according to exactly what I tell them, I could easily go to a cheapo place. But if I want to give some freedom to the stylist to make suggestions, take a look at the shape of my head, take notice that the crown of my head much thinner than the front, and basically take lead in ensuring I walk out their door with a smile on my face to match my new rad hairdo, I come to places like Huckle. But sadly this was not the case.... The top of my hair was cut to highlight the thinning parts, I had hair going to and fro in an unnatural parting of my hair, and it was strangely styled in the end. All in all, I felt like the guy cutting my hair could care less and I was just another haircut to get out of the way. Don't get me wrong, I'm not high maintenance or anything so I can easily walk away from these things with no hard feelings, but still... I didn't leave loving this place either. Plus, I'm a dude, so my hair will grow out and I'll need another cut in a month or so. I would give my overall experience and haircut two stars. But my experience is based on one out of many stylists they have there, so maybe it was just my bad luck in the random selection. Plus, I saw many happy customers that day and I do like the establishment and location as well. So adding those items in, I could be nice and give it three stars. I'm still not sure if I will be back to get another person, but we'll see next month!
