I was visiting London and was aghast at how scorched my hair had become in Greece. After checking reviews on Yelp, I emailed TOKITO salon overnight and was able to book in for lunch the next day. I walked in very cautious because with a stylist who is a stranger, a lot can be misunderstood - plus, I have hair almost to my waist, and after encountering some stylists who seemed to feel like a few extra unasked inches off was not a big deal (wut), I am scared of new stylists... but no need for fear, here! Hiro is very attentive and listens very carefully, and clearly had no agenda but to apply his expertise to my direction. Hiro cut my hair dry so I could make adjustments as we saw the progress; he was very conservative at my request, and didn't complain in the least when I reconsidered my asks twice and wanted to cut even more to address the dry ends. It was clear I could trust him not to overdo it, which made me trust his judgement. After the main trim, he did a fantastic wash and head massage, used the dryer on only medium heat (which is so much better for your hair!) and did a little more touch-up trimming once my hair was fully blown out. Hiro is capable of giving a good haircut but unfortunately it started to feel like playing the lottery going every time whether it'll be what I'm looking for (and I want the same cut every time so nothing too complicated!) I saw Hiro yesterday for a haircut and wow...where do I begin? 1) I liked my experience and my haircut so much that on the train ride home, I seriously considered keeping Hiro my little secret. 2) I have, just like fellow Elite Colleen noted in her review, been in London for almost two years and have been to multiple stylists including Headmasters and j. moriyama - this haircut is the best cut I have ever had in London. 3) The whole cut took over an hour - which I love because Hiro took his time and his perfection shined through. First he cut whilst I still had wet hair (from the hair wash, not from London's recent crazy downpour haha), and then he dried my hair to cut some more. 4) Throughout the whole process, Hiro was super chill, kept me informed about what he was doing (even though I made it clear to him that I trusted his expertise and told him to do "whatever makes me look good"). 5) Hiro went beyond the call of duty every time he added new layers or reshaped the length - I remember that I kept thinking "wow, I look hot...he must be finishing up soon..." - nope, ten minutes later "hot damn, I didn't know this is possible...he must be finishing soon because I like it a lot already..." - nope, another ten minutes later "@#$%! Best haircut I've had in London. I've now lived in London for 2 years, and have been to multiple stylists seeking the best cut. I've been sliced, diced, asymmetried, razored, blocked, dissected, pruned, primped and snipped by the best of 'em, but never left feeling like it was exactly what I wanted. Until I met Hiro at Tokito Hair last weekend. This is the guy. (please please please let this be the guy). I've searched far and wide (ok, in Shoreditch!) and left this salon thinking "YES, exactly." First, Tokito Hair is a newish salon on Hackney Road, just off Shoreditch High Street. It is immaculately clean, with sparkling wood floors and a very minimalist aesthetic (white/black). After all, Hiro is the owner and it is a Japaenese salon -- they've got style on lockdown. His style is reflected. It is very clean and straightforward without being pretentious or haughty, whatsoever. I came to the salon about 10 weeks after my previous cut which left my hair uneven (not in a cool way), short in places, long in others and generally just overgrown and in a state of distress. He talked to me for a good 10 minutes about what I wanted, what would work, combed back and forth through my short-ish hair. When I told him I wanted a piece shaved on the side (apparently feeling a bit minxy early on a Sunday) and he advised I take that side very short/tight and then if I like it come back next time and do the shave. I think he was concerned it would be a bit much (probably) but I appreciated his suggestion and it looked great. He then set out cutting my hair. The whole thing took 1 hour start to finish, and it never felt rushed or too slow. He cut, then dried, then cut some more, finishing with some styling...and I walked out feeling like a million bucks (err, pounds) and it was neither too short (often happens with short hair) but in great shape and felt just as I envisioned it. I finally found a hairstylist that can read my mind. We'll call him a hair advisor. Hiro is very talented. I will be back and am hoping this can be my regular salon, as I really enjoy the vibe. I was there on a holiday trip so it was great for me to go for a quick haircut and get back to sightsee. The place is very minimalistic beautiful posh, with a friendly vibe to it. I was going in with an idea to change my look completely for new years but i was so nervous! A really great relaxing visit to this Japanese salon in the middle of Shoreditch. I recently moved into the area and had been walking a few times before finally booking myself in for a cut. Hiro was amazing with my hair, he sat down and went through various options about what we could do with my hair and kept offering suggestions throughout the cut. Even better they're open late, which is a godsend so I didn't have to rush from work to make sure I wasn't late! Vanessa has the cutting skills of an average beginner and Hiro is so full of himself that even you'd pay a lot of money, you won't be treated fairly! Over the years i went to a lot of hairdressers in London, expensive or cheap - i have short hair and i can tell you for sure, don't choose Vanessa! She's not able to master a pixie cut properly and Hiro...when i've complained -he came over, told me something like "she's a junior stylist what do you expect??" -chopped my hair for half a minute and said -"yeah is fine"! All this for £45! Go somewhere else, to be honest i've been treated better and had better cuts for £25! During a trip to the UK for work, I found myself with an afternoon to kill in London and used it to clean up my haircut at Tokito, since my Airbnb was nearby anyway, and Yelpers were falling over themselves for the owner Hiro. After an extremely prompt email reply from Hiro, I was able to pop in and actually ended up taking advantage of a deal with their senior stylist, Simone. Simone asked me some questions about how I like to style my hair and, after he gave me some suggestions on how a slightly different cut would suit my hair and needs*, I let him get to work, though I admit I was a bit skeptical. Unfortunately for Simone and most stylists I usually leave pretty quietly and get used to the hair on my own time. But I came around big time on this cut - it's the best I've had in years. Too bad I don't live here. Tokito would have another devotee. *I love that Simone actually had a professional opinion (and chill bedside manner). Went there two days ago for a hairstyle for prom, the staff started freaking out when I brought a picture of how I wanted my hair to be and assigned me an unexperienced hairdresser who gave me a completely different hairstyle than I had imagined. After two hours I had a very messy, ugly braid. My mum and I had to go to Accessorize to buy some pins BECAUSE THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY! Award-winning salon, and they don't even have pins?!
