It's no secret that Nipigon is not a great town for food. However, the Edgewater Restaurant is one place, and likely the only placen within 100 kilometers of here that bucks that trend. It's rare in the area. It's a place with excellent food, great service and home-cooked meals that make you want to stop by every time you drive through town. Hands down, it's the premier place to eat in Nipigon and I know that's not saying much, but this restaurant could survive in downtown Toronto because the food is that good. What makes Edgewater so good? For starters, all of their food is made from scratch on-site. So when you order it it doesn't come out in two minutes. They actually make it so please be patient which isn't too difficult to do in this cozy atmosphere with a beautiful view out the back deck. The family that runs this place provides an inviting setting and while it's not the cheapest food in town it's clearly the best. Let's start with the chicken parmesan. This dish comes with hand-cut fries and hand breaded chicken parm with homemade sauce. It's a must eat off the menu. And if they have the tomato pesto soup you got to order it with this dish. The soup is phenomenal. We've ordered a lot of items in the few times that we've been here. One of our other favorites is the Philly cheese steak. I have eaten cheesesteak in Philadelphia a dozen times and there's rivals anything you'd find in that city, except Tony Lukes. And don't be afraid to order a burger. They're made from fresh beef and taste wonderful. The portions are so large here that there's never room for dessert but somehow we eat it anyway. Normally, they have several pies that they make in house. Our favorites is the pumpkin pie the blueberry pie and the cherry pie. However, the lemon meringue pie and the cheesecake are pretty darn good too.

Sadly this restaurant seems to be closed. The couple who ran it were lovely and the pickerel dinner superb. We wish them well.

Food and Nipigon is hard to come by as it is but this place shouldn't even be on your list. The service was terrible and the food rivaled that. We wouldn't return even late at night when everything else is closed. This is unfortunate as this place is open 24/7 but as bad as the food was we can't stomach another round. I started with the homemade soup of the day and nothing in it resembled anything that was homemade. It tastes worse than something from the grocery store that's been sitting in a can for three years. Let's get back to the service. Our server had a terrible attitude and didn't know the menu at all. Even with the restaurant not being crowded it was a chore to get her to refill a drink or even crack a smile. In fact 20 minutes after we finished our meal I walked up to the counter and asked if I could pay the bill since our wonderful waitress never came back. Let's talk about the King of the Road Burger, which is supposed to be one of their signature items. I visited with a guy that's six-foot-seven and 350 pounds. He lives off stuff like McDonald's. The burger was so bad he struggled to eat it. It tasted like a frozen patty with absolutely no flavor at all. Even ketchup couldn't cure the taste. The french fries were just as bad. Personally, I went with the hamburger steak and I couldn't have picked a more poor item. This steak had absolutely zero flavor to it and the mushrooms that were in the gravy tasted like they were five years old. Terrible quality when it comes to food. We knew that the food here wasn't going to be good period but we did expect it to the edible and it wasn't. We ate as much as we could and drove down the road to Timmy's to grab a few snacks instead before going fishing. The food and the service was that bad.

Walked in around 7pm and were promptly greeted and asked if we wanted to sit at the bar or dining room. We chose the dining room so we walked down the narrow wooden floor hallway to a back area where their dining area was. The table already had drink menus on it which makes sense as reviews say this restaurant is great for cocktails and they have a huge selection of wines. Our server soon brought over water for us and food menus. She asked if either of us had any food allergies, which we didn't. Also explained which section was appetizers/shareable plates and which were mains. Also mentioned that the menu is seasonal and everything on it currently is so good. After giving us some time to choose, she took our order. We ordered one shareable, Tuna Crudo. It was well balanced being sweet, sour, creamy, fresh, and with a tiny little kick. It made it evident that the mains would be really tasty as well. Server came back to not only take away the empty plate, but also swapped out our small plates and cutlery for new ones. Both of our mains arrived at the same time, descriptions of what ingredients were in each. Portion size was definitely fair (not too little and not huge) so we left satisfied and full, but not stuffed. Only regret was that we were only a party of 2, otherwise would have loved to order their Family Style Tasting (the table next to us had it and everything looked delicious). In terms of ambience, seating is cozy, as there isn't a whole lot of space between tables, but it's workable. As well, the lighting is pretty dim for our preference, but can understand why others might enjoy it. We walked over from our hotel, but looks like there is street parking in the area. Overall, had a very pleasant dining experience and service and hospitality was top-notch.

Rather, the friendly service, innovative cookery, and high quality, locally sourced ingredients speak for themselves. I was in town to celebrate my birthday and this place was so special. Also if you want something a little more casual, they have a pizza place a few blocks away tucked inside a brewery, which is also fantastic!
