I didn't book soon enough to get rooms in the new section. Mistake #2 The hot springs are indeed hot. There are three pools. We only used the two outside as they were plenty hot enough for our group. I did not acclimate to the sulphur smell but sounds like most people do. The pools seemed dirty despite being drained each night. The stained liner added to the appearance of poor upkeep. And the swarming mosquitoes (not the hotel's fault, obviously) made our time there miserable. The staff person who checked us in was disinterested and unhelpful. The rooms were clean but otherwise awful. I'm not opposed to old but unkept is another story. The laminated furniture was bubbled up all over the place. The carpet was literally coming up at the edges and missing in places. The bathroom window had no covering with a two story building just across the way. The shower curtain in the RV sized shower was too short so basically ineffectual. Lightbulbs were out and the provided travel sized toiletries were random. Should we decide to try the hot springs again, we'll be looking at other options in town. The convenience of staying on site isn't worth it.

You can visit the site of the forlorn Mercantile, but the doors are shuttered. The woman who runs the bar lives 35 miles east of town and kinda sorta comes in whenever the mood moves her as I understand it. The hotel is rickety and way past it's best days. One bathroom for 13 rooms and you can't lock your room door when you leave. No one around to steal your stuff anyway, so that's not an issue really. The door to our room had a 2"-3" gap at the top and, truth be told, wouldn't even stay shut without pushing clothes or a chair up against it. When people arrive late (midnight one night we were there) you hear every word they say as they shuffle in. All the rooms are down a single hall on the upper floor. Noisy I tell ya. The owners are warm and accommodating. The food is average at best, but as it's the only place to sleep or eat within 30 miles ... I have back packed through parts of Eastern Europe and stayed in a few places that are rough and tumble. Crazy Mountain Inn could be one of them. Still, all in all, a fun little place with happy folks all around.
