It was not part of my original idea for my most recent trip to Natchez, but I had to use the…read morerestroom desperately. $20 for a 30 minute tour seems a bit steep, and as the Garden Club owns it, the focus of the tour seems to be on the things the Garden Club does, which is all fine and good. Everything seems to be restored to its original style and looks, and the history of the house is covered well, and it is nice that they point out that the kitchen was attached to the house. Clothes from the time frame the house was built and dresses from the current balls they have. It was all quite lovely.

Stanton Hall was built (for $83,000) during 1851-57 for Frederick Stanton, a cotton broker, as a replica of his ancestral home in Ireland. Stanton named it "Belfast", but only lived in it a short time before he died. The house's scale and opulence made it a great financial burden on his heirs, but it survived the American Civil War (after being occupied by Union soldiers), and in 1890 was made home to the Stanton College for Young Ladies. In 1940 it was acquired by the Pilgrimage Garden Club, which uses it as its headquarters and operates it as a museum and event venue.

The owners were super friendly. The environment was inviting. And don't get me started on how good the desserts were. I heard a lot of people bragging on how good the breakfast was here too! "Rev. William Hamilton Watkins (1815-1881) built Sunnyside as a parsonage in the 1850s. When the Union troops were camped close, a Union soldier by the name of Jones became friends with the Watkins family. Watkins' daughter, Hattie, fell in love with him. Jones was nearby when Confederates came to Watkins for assistance. They ask if he would contribute to the Confederacy. Watkins agreed. His oldest son was fighting in the war, and he hoped that some of his contributions would get to his son. Jones, however, reported Watkins to the Union Army, Watkins was arrested and charged with treason. During his trial, the commandant told Watkins that the crimes for which he was charged are punishable by death. Watkins replied, "I know nothing of the laws of war, only the gospel of God." Watkins' bail was set at $10,000, which is equivalent to about $188,755.21 in 2023. Because he only made $1,100 a year (about $20,763.07 in 2023), he could not come up with the money. He remained incarcerated until the end of 1865. Once released, he went on to minister in Jackson, Vicksburg, Woodville, and other places."

We chose Choctaw Hall for our stay in Natchez partly because of its location to the various…read morehistoric trails and to the river and partly because of the idea of staying in a "townhouse" from 1836. Our room was very comfortably appointed with a roomy en suite. The common room just outside our door provided 24-hour coffee and other drinks plus snacks. We had our morning coffee and evening drinks outside while we enjoyed the quiet neighborhood and magnificent oak trees. Lee gave us the tour of the house as David's voice is giving out. While the house is beautiful, the contents are what make it unique and fascinating. David and Lee are excellent hosts - helpful but not intrusive. The coupons for breakfast at two different nearby restaurants added to the enjoyment - both restaurants were an easy walk and both were delicious. Additionally, several restaurants (try the po-boy at Wardos) nearby were delicious. Choctaw Hall was the perfect location for walking old Natchez and "below the hill" while enjoying the ambience of an historic Natchez townhouse. We had a memorable stay.

Walked in and there was dirt, food, stains, dust and grime over everything. There is no way anyone ran a vacuum here. Then I found poop stains on the bedding-my husband took pics as proof. There was blood stains on the bed my daughter was going to sleep in. We couldn't do it-so we asked for another room. Was given a room on floor 2. The key didn't worked-was told that the room had a broken lock. Was then moved back to floor 4, the room directly Nextdoor to the initial dirty one. Was told that housekeeping just finished cleaning it. This one wasn't much better. Bedding stained, floors were atrocious, mysterious stains on the sofa and chairs. The ice bucket appeared to have dark smudge stains on it. The drawer handles were sticky, did not want to know what that was. We didn't stay long enough to shower and quite frankly-I didn't want to step foot into the shower anyway judging from the amount of mold and hair in there. Needless to say-we all kept our socks and slippers on. We throughly checked the beds for any signs of bedbugs as that is always a worry, thankfully we didn't see any (I bring travel spray anyway to be safe). Unfortunately my daughter did spot a small spider on her bedding in which made for a pretty bad night with trying to settle down a panicked child. The water took FOREVER to heat up and the pressure was awful. Breakfast was free, but in all honesty, I didn't want to stay in the hotel any longer nor eat the food. We got up as early as we could and checked out. We expressed our concerns and showed pics of the poopy blankets in which the desk clerk giggled and never even made eye contact as if he had heard this before and knew. Wow. DO NOT STAY HERE. We should have just slept in our vehicle.

They served a steak that was very thin and nothing but bone and a lot of fat. Broccoli and sliced carrots that looked like they cane out of a microwave dinner. And half-yes, half of a baked potato. That was about 4 inches long. The entire plate of food was cold when delivered to the table. They had 4-5 people to serve the entire room of about 1,000 soldiers and their spouses. Dinner at these events normally takes about an hour to hour and a half. This one took 2 hours 15 mins. I wouldn't recommend this convention center for any type of function.

We stayed in the Pond Cottage 2-bedroom suite and unfortunately had such a poor experience that we…read moreended up paying for both Monmouth and a second hotel in Natchez because we could not stay the night. The "2-bedroom suite" layout was very misleading for three adults. The second bedroom was accessed through the main bedroom, making it awkward for privacy and much better suited for parents traveling with young children. The sitting area was essentially non-functional, leaving us with nowhere to comfortably spend time outside the main bedroom. The room had an extremely strong floral fragrance that was overwhelming and made one member of our party feel nauseated. While the grounds are beautiful in photographs, they clearly needed maintenance. Areas were overgrown and potentially hazardous for elderly guests or those with mobility issues. The parking area became muddy and flooded after only a mild rain. The outdoor furniture was dirty, weathered, and in some cases had exposed metal that made us uncomfortable using it. There was also a noticeable odor of cat urine around parts of the property. The bathroom initially appeared updated, until you encountered the wooden plank transition into the shower and the toilet area, which was so small it was difficult to even turn around comfortably. We specifically chose Monmouth for the immersive historic inn experience and instead found it to be an expensive disappointment and a $300 mistake.

The home is very well taken care of and the grounds are beautiful. I cannot speak for the rooms as we did not see inside them and were not guests who stayed on the property. The house does not act as the place guests stay. They stay in other buildings that are on the property. Guest services were very nice as well.
