All'Italiana -- did they even use egg yolks in my carbonara?!? My warm order was rather tasteless (aside from acceptingly salty from the guanciale) and lacking richness you'd get from egg yolks+parm. My friend confirmed that ghost kitchens can benefit those who order delivery at the comfort of their homes, but the quality of food takes a huge hit of compromise versus a brick & mortar. Going inside the area, it's relatively small but since I was the only customer at the time, it was spacious. I went for the standard Arepa Burger, fries and for dessert, I did want the brownie with ice cream but they didn't have that available so I settled for churros with nutella. The wait wasn't too long, very much short of 8 minutes when everything was set. The Arepa burger came loaded with Shredded beef & Chicken, black beans, Shredded white cheese & maduros. For what it's worth, you'll get your fill from this makeshift burger, it was so filling. The fries were done with excellent detail, firm crisp texture along with taste and goes pretty well with the Ketchup & Mayo mixture the place had with one of their condiment bottles. When it came time to take on the churros, I immediately got thrown off because they're not the churros I'm normally used to. Instead what was smothered with the nutella happened to be cheese sticks and at first I thought it was a mistake but seeing pictures on here, that's basically what it is. I do love cheese sticks and I do love nutella, but in my opinion they're not meant to be combined so I had to forgo it. Everything else was top notch. The food was very decent and the service was proper so everything I got was $23 and I threw in a $7 tip to round it off to $30 total for the meal. They got many different variants of Arepa sandwiches so there is certainly revisit value in this place and I can go for that.

The chicken salad was mostly mayo, it's all you tasted, like eating a mayonnaise sandwich with a few shreds of chicken and two slices of avocado. The arepa was hard and cold as well. You couldn't get past one bite that's how awful it all was. It went right in the garbage.

Overall, some of the staff have a consistent sense of unhappiness and an air of disdain for the clientele, which is unfortunate. As someone who has a very high tolerance for unhappy, flippant or rude service team members generally, it's rare for people be so poor in customer service that it makes it into a review.

El Pìlon not only transported me back to the motherland, but it was also a reminder of all the wonderful culinary adventures right here in Sunnyside. El Pilon looks like a tiny cafe from the outside and gets little to no pub compared to the rest of the vast Colombian eateries throughout the neighborhood. There is only seating for a small handful and is the consummate solo dining spot. Come in the morning and marvel at the display case, which is chock full of items found in Colombian panaderías. There is a myriad of sweet goods, such as pan de bono, almojábana, mojicón, pandeboca, and roscones. There is also a decent amount of savory choices, such as pan de yuca, empanadas, buñelos, and arepas de queso / choclo. The latter is so fire that not every bakery will have it. There are also daily food specials, which is perfect for a hearty solo lunch or an affordable option with big portions. None come more decorated than the Colombian national dish, bandeja paisa, in which their version (bandeja especial el pilón) comes with a chicharrón stick, chorizo, carne asada, topped with an egg and avocado, over rice, beans, plantains, and an arepa. The ground beef (carne molida) version is through their bandeja montañera, pechuga empanizada, bistec encebollado, and a fine bowl of their sancocho de costilla, costillas guisadas, or the sopa de pollo. Speaking Spanish and having cash will go a long way. This is not a dinner spot, but perfect for breakfast and lunch. Although prices have increased I don't mind because I know the food is amazing. Service is always great which is a plus. The place itself is small and cozy but worth visiting. I definitely recommend El Pilon.
