While one of the pastors there did say they appreciated my ministry during a zoom bible study there was no reliable show of such support and I actually never learned why. That pastor did have our mental health outreach flyer translated to Spanish but yet never shared the outreach or the flyer with the congregation and or offer to support by attending, assisting with volunteers, etc. I am grateful for the translation. The congregation here is largely Hispanic and most of the pastors are young. I'm however African American and over 60; not sure if that matters but this was my experience. The youth pastor is fantastic with his ability to connect with teens, speak into their lives, and make them excited about attending. The sermons do not hold your hand and coddle you; they are sermons that challenge you to reconsider your perspective and your faith journey. There are times I've felt uncomfortable by the lessons, but that's good. I want to be challenged. I want to grow. Sermons are topic-based rather than book based, but they are fully reliant on scripture as the basis of each sermons. Communion is practiced nearly every week. The worship team is fantastic. There is outside seating as well as inside. I also appreciate that they focus on ministry partners rather than trying to do everything themselves. They have partners with local, national, and international mission projects, and their special Christmas giving is focused on supporting those partners rather than the church itself. There are optional fundraisers throughout the year to help support the local ministries, some of which require no funds at all - you can volunteer time or even write cards of encouragement. I will say it can be hard to meet people there if you're an introvert, but that's that case with most churches. If you join a community group or attend one of the many all-church activities, you'll find yourself getting to know people and will soon feel like Parkcrest is home and the people are family.

Every one I've been to (except for one) adheres to the expositional method of Bible teaching, meaning the Bible is taught verse by verse. Calvary Chapel Long Beach is no exception. This particular Calvary Chapel does not have its own facility, so they meet for worship in the main auditorium of Marshall Academy of the Arts. The senior pastor is Roger Cochran, who teaches the Word of God verse by verse. I've been to the midweek Bible studies and on one night, Pastor Roger was out of town, so his son Andrew filled in, and he did a really great job. Andrew had a lot of enthusiasm for teaching the Word, which was quite refreshing and encouraging to see. The Sunday service meets at 9:30 a.m. The midweek study meets every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. There is also a men's ministry, women's ministry, teen ministry and children's ministry. Additionally, there is a college group and a group for married couples. This is a solid, Bible-teaching church worth checking out. The people who attend are friendly and welcoming, too.
