Review for The Eye Doctors on Wanamaker - Topeka, KS I received four text reminders to arrive 15 minutes early for my appointment. I showed up 20 minutes early, only to be told they were running behind because a staff member had recently had a baby. I was asked to have a seat. Five minutes before my scheduled appointment time, I approached the front desk to ensure I was checked in--only to find out they hadn't checked me in yet. I ended up waiting 30 minutes past my appointment time before being called back. Once I was seen, I was pressured with upsells for services I didn't ask for and didn't need. The doctor seemed competent but spent less than 10 minutes with me and then directed me to another person for contact fitting. The contact fitting turned out to be a joke--just someone handing me a contact and a mirror. No instruction, no guidance, no hygiene consideration (like offering hand sanitizer or asking if I'd washed my hands). For this, I was charged $72. Luckily I had worn contacts before. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. I won't be returning, and I won't be giving this office any more of my business. read more

This is the worst company to go and get glasses from so I go in for a eye appointment they tell me I have been approved to get a special contact for my eyes I go see a specialist they find the contacts I need I go back and spend two hours trying on contact then they send them out to get the right prescription it takes a couple of weeks then I take them home and I can't see in the contact so I called them I take them back to the doctor she have me do another exam and then she sends the contacts back out to get fixed i have been waiting two months so I called today and they give me the run around again so now I speak to the rude manager Liz she tells me that the pair on contacts that I had were a trial pair and that if I want the contacts I have to pay for them the crayz part is one if I would have never had a issue when we're they going to tell me that I owed them money it was a whole scam they told me my insurance was paying for the contacts then they told me they were going to charge me for some contacts that I dont have anymore I will never do business with this company again they have bad customer service bad management and they scam there customers read more

They were to order me some trial contacts. I never heard from them and called in a couple weeks and they said they were not there. I called couple weeks later and they had never been ordered. I called back two or three times to see if they were in stock and they were not. this is just a hot mess. I continue to go because I like the doctor. but this front office is a hot mess. constantly tell you they are short staffed but yet don't even do the simple things. Appointment wait times are horrendous. My husband and I went two weeks ago and waited an hour. My son went yesterday and waited 45 min. I called today since the night before they gave the the wrong prescription and charged the wrong co pay. I was told I would get the prescription within an hour and a call about the co pay. nothing. The worst experience I ever had with an eye doctor! The doctor was great. Customer service was very poor, went in to pick up my glasses and I couldn't see thur them, so they took them back to correct the problem. When I went back two weeks later I still couldn't see right with them. that's when the lady helping me copped an attitude, I asked her if I can get a box for the glasses she told me she already gave me one last time I was in there. I told her no ma'am you did not she told me whatever I'll get you one. I told her just forget it and she said no I know I gave you one but I'll find you one in front of all the people there. Making me feel like I was some kind of thief wanting a free box. Question is why would you give a customer an empty box when you ship the glasses back out to be fixed would you not put the glasses back in the box? I will never go back. They called me to remind me to make and appointment You cant actually call and speak to a person without listening to 5 minutes of recordings. and when I finally did get an appointment they sent me at least 4 texts reminding me of my appointment and when I went to the appointment they told me that they no longer take medicaid. You think they would have told me that after six years of accepting it. When I got home they called me again telling me it was time for a check up. One hand does not know what the other is doing. Then they called again and said it was a mistake, they do actually take medicaid. Get your act together. I stopped into the Wannamaker location and the blond girl receptionist is very unprofessional very snotty. read more

I had scheduled an appointment more than 2 months in advance for December for a test I was told they only do on Wednesday and Friday. I got a text saying they changed my appointment to Thursday because someone put in for vacation and they won't change it. So they can schedule appointments but when one of their staff wants vacation it's the patient that is inconvenienced. read more

My wife went in to get her glasses adjusted as they were digging into her nose. The young girl who came out pretty much said there was nothing that could be done. After a discussion back and forth the girl left with a huff and attitude. A couple of the other customers waiting also mentioned what an attitude this girl had. Left with no satisfaction. Also noticing the reviews for the Wanamaker location are 2 stars while the Hunters Ridge location has 4 1/2 stars. Might tell you someone needs to look into customer service at Wanamaker location. I'd like to say that the optometrist care and service was outstanding. The only reason for the lower rating was the experience following the exam. The sales person was so matter of fact - "what do you want?" I said I would like to learn options under my insurance - that I was given 2 prescriptions (regular/computer). I asked if I could see a comparison chart of the different features with their costs (the same sheet she was using to tell me how much it was and how much my insurance would pay). She said she couldn't. I have to pick what I want as I go along. I've received a comparison cost list from other eyeglass providers. I then asked if I reused my previous frames, could I apply my frame allowance to the 2nd pair. She clapped back, "No! Once we bill the insurance - that's it! You only get one pair." (But I checked with EyeMed and that is not true. She said the discount on the 2nd pair would only be what EyeDoctors offers and not what EyeMed says in their coverage.) I asked about using a frame that I thought I'd gotten from them. She quickly said it didn't come from them. I put it away as I said I could look at home but I thought I'd checked before I brought that one. No problem. I let her look at the pair I was wearing and she said I didn't get those frames from there either. I mentioned that I'd already said that I'd gotten them elsewhere. I was interested in reusing the frames that I'd gotten from the EyeDoctors before. So she told me to give her back the frames I just put away. I said, "I thought you said you can't help me because those weren't from here?" She clapped back, "I can't! You have to have the pair you got from here!" I said, "I heard you. That is why I said I'd go home to look and come back." She huffed and rolled her eyes and looked away. That was it! I politely said, "You know, I never experienced this before when I got my glasses from here. Could I just get my prescriptions?" I will never buy my glasses through there but the optometrist service was extremely professional and polite. read more

Expect the Eye Doctors to send you an additional bill weeks after your visit for 20-30 percent more than you already paid. I explained to the girl working that I had a budget for glasses....she accommodates....then, Lo and behold, I got an additional bill for $63 more a few weeks after my visit! When I tried to argue it, they said if I don't pay it they will send it to collections...I explained that I'e never been billed for additional monies after the fact by any business before in my life. But because I signed the piece of paper saying they can bill me for any portion of the insurance they feel like after the fact, they can and they did, and they do it all the time. This happened at the Topeka Blvd location, but all Eye Doctors do this to the people on a consistent basis according to the corporate rep. Stay away from ALL Eye Doctors! They try to pretend they "make mistakes" when running insurance....but they are actually billing extra. read more

Very unhappy with the lab quality of the glasses. Ordered glasses from them 3 times. Staff can't get it together. They "forget " to order the glasses they tell you it takes 14 days to get the glasses 3 months later I finally get my glasses and they aren't the right prescription. I couldn't even read the signs outside! The girl who "helped " me shrugged and said sorry and rolled her eyes! I did tell her I understand she doesn't care but when they don't start trying to fix these issues they won't have jobs because the place won't make money. I am elderly and have several different things going on with my eyes. Dr. Christie did a number of tests I have not had done before. She took the time to explain and answer all my questions. I ordered new glasses and Hunter did an excellent job assisting me with the frame chose, fitting them and doing the billing. I don't remember the young lady who did the prep work before seeing the Dr. but she also was quite proficient and friendly. It was a pleasant experience. I will go there again. read more

I availed their medical routine eye testing service for my son. To my surprise : 1. They did mistake in appointment. Wasted lot of time at the front desk 2. My insurance said they are in network. I confirmed with them as well and post getting their service they submitted claim to my insurance as Out of network. My insurance called them and asked them submit under correct category. Despite of this they kept sending me wrong bills with due date. My insurance told me that they need to call them. When I called Eye doctors they said system shows no bill pending. After one week they are saying system generated wrong bill. They are neither calling my insurance nor correcting their system and cancelling the invoice but just sending me bills. read more

Let's see...Dr. Lower rarely gets my prescription correct, which almost always requires a follow-up visit...the contact lens person is very difficult to reach (receptionist always says she's with patients and will call back but NEVER does). Even with insurance, most times I leave with a $300.00+ bill for new glasses!! And finally, those who answer the phones always sound like they are completely miserable. What used to be a optometrist, that cared about their clients is unfortunately now just a corporate cash cow. Don't pay attention to the prices on the glasses...everything is now an upsell and sales driven. I took my daughter in to learn how to use her new contacts (Shawn was actually very good with her), but then just happened to ask if my glasses were in yet. They found them in the back. No call or text to let me know...who knows when they were going to get around to it. Tried them out and took them home. They were transition tri-focal. Once at work, realized that the computer screen was blurry and this part of my prescription was either incorrect or glasses not made correctly. Went in today at 1:40p and was told nobody could help me because everyone was at lunch. I looked over and saw someone else being helped and asked "what about her"? Was informed that she was about to go on lunch when she got finished with who she was waiting on. I asked if the hours posted on the door were correct and was told that I could sit down and wait until after 2p when people got back from lunch. As soon as I get these glasses corrected, they've lost my family business...4 people with glasses. The ONLY reason they got a star at all from me are Shawn and Dr. Hilmes...who does care and is very good. If fact, I'll probably still go to him and get my glasses elsewhere. read more

So I went in today, 7/12/2018, to see about having a new pair of glasses made up, already having a prescription in hand. Turned in the paper work, noting they only had one tech on the floor who was helping a family. Waited about 15 minutes, went back to the desk asked if they had another tech and if I was ahead or behind the one other customer in the store. "We've got another tech just back from lunch and you're ahead of the other customer", I was told. Another long wait and finally the second tech appears and calls for the other customer. Back to the front desk to ask what gives and the same woman I had spoken to earlier says "I'm so sorry but she was here ahead of you" Now everybody makes mistakes but it struck me as the old "Tell the customer whatever it takes to keep them in the store" routine. When I arrived, the front desk was extremely busy, racing around in a frantic fashion, as were the other staff. Felt like I was just one in a large herd of cattle. The front receptionist pushed 3 laminated forms in front of me and pointed initial here, sign here, fill out and bring back to me. I was NOT presented a HIPPA disclosure, so I did not initial that I was provided one. I even told another clerk that I did not receive so I did not initial. She was not concerned and did not offer one. I was rushed through my appointment by the staff, Dr. Truelove did take time and provide the same care I have enjoyed for years from her - that is the only reason this is 2 star and not 1. I felt everyone was super busy. Then I was charged for a "contact fitting". I was not made aware of the service charge until "services" were already rendered. I only had one contact and I have had them in the past. This fitting consisted of 2 to 3 minutes of your staff watching me put in 1 ONE contact and then they charged me 65 dollars for all that service. My husband said they did the same thing to our daughter the week before. Shouldn't you be told there is a cost prior to services being rendered? I was then charged a co-pay and I don't have a co-pay. I told them I didn't; but, they charged it anyway. They need to slow down and pay attention. They need to disclose charges for services before they render them so patients can decide if I want to pay for them. Beware of hidden fees. read more

They are the best! My optometrist, Dr. Truelove, is very thorough, explains things very well, relieves my stress about the eye condition that I have by always being on top of it and is very knowledgeable. The staff has always been very helpful in selecting my frames (because you know you always need that second opinion!) and the contact center staff are also very helpful and attentive. Yes, I know you don't get your glasses as fast as at the "cheap" places, but you sure do get terrific quality! I highly recommend them and consider them to be the #1 place to go in Topeka for your eyecare needs. read more

The staff for contacts was very unprofessional, The young girl spend more time looking at her cell phone, than helping my child with his first contact fitting. I picked up my contacts (after paying a lot more for them then buying the other places) and they only provided me the contacts, but no case, solution to try out, nothing. I took my kids in for eye checks and contacts in early July. I was less than impressed with the amount of time the doctor spent with them (around 5 minutes each), but understand that they have full schedules. I was told that their contacts would be shipped to our home. We received 6/8 boxes in late August (6 weeks after the order was placed). I called to check on the other 2 boxes and there seemed to be a great deal of confusion about if or when they had been ordered/sent. I was told that they would probably arrive soon and to call if they didn't show up. I had $120 in rebates that required submission within 60 days of purchase and discussed this at that time with the clerk. She told me not to worry about submitting, the office would take care of it and have the contact rep send the rebate once I had all of the contacts. I finally received the last 2 boxes last week and went to submit the rebate online. I was unable to do so because I was outside of the 60 day window. I called the office again and this time was told that there might not be any way to get the rebate. I emailed the office manager and didn't hear back for 3 days. I called again today and was told that I would receive $60 in store credit. No. Thanks. It should not be this hard to get the product I paid for in a timely manner. I have wasted a ton of time simply getting the contacts. Subpar service for sure. Will NOT be returning!! read more

Husband went for his annual eye exam after I checked with my insurance and the office to make sure they were in network and we would be covered 100 percent. Well we got a bill stating the Dr they set us up with us not in nerwork. The manager denied that this is the reason we had charges even though I have numerous statements saying the reason it was not paid is because she was out of network. Manager says She is in network, although the staff looked it up and said She is not! She is only one in the office who is not a network dr. The manager is very rude, argumentative, and would not listen. Long story short, I challenged it with the insurance company and won. We do not have to pay it as we did everything right and they were 100% wrong. I will never use the Wanamaker office again or recommend them to anyone. Beware, and make sure if you use them that they are truthful with you, and that they bill correctly. I've used the Hunters Ridge office for years with any out of pocket charges of any problems at all. read more
