I asked the woman at the register if there was a restroom available, and she told me, "No, our bathroom is not public but you can go to California Tortilla and use theirs." I returned to my fiancé, who was waiting near the bathroom, and overheard another employee tell a different customer, "We don't normally let people use the bathroom because there are boxes in there, but we can make an exception (white customers) I mentioned that I had just been told the restroom was not public, and the employee responded, "Yeah, but we can make an exception for her, not you," in what felt like a very dismissive and condescending tone. The interaction left me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. Consistency and respectful communication with customers of all skin tones is important, and unfortunately that was not my experience here. Definitely recommend buying on stores like Amazon and not supporting this behavior.

We learned they had sold the last dumpling minutes before we got to the store--but she told us when they're expecting a shipment and even what time of day is best to arrive to get one. They will also add you to a list to get texts when hot items like Needohs and Dumplings are back in stock. So this makes it a little easier to get that one hot item.

The store is so wonderful, located right across the way from Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. Managed to get there on a good day, easy parking. it's a small shopping center, y'know? Walking in, it literally was wall-to-wall vintage collectibles. Many still in their packages. Walking through it all brought a sense of nostalgia, but at the same time I felt a dull pain--in my wallet. Whatever your focus is, collecting can be expensive and time consuming. Star Wars, Barbie, He-Man, Star Trek (to a lesser extent)...DC/Marvel superheroes. Collectible toy cars (Hot wheels, etc.). There's a lot to look at. Some in their own package, some bagged specifically for the store. 85% of what's there are action figures and such. The rest is a mix of collectible comics, toy cars, and other odd bits. I'd say the prices are reasonable, though a handful of the limited edition collectibles (such as a Sideshow figure of Ghost Rider on his flaming bike) had prices which gave heart palpitations. Era-wise, I'd say the vast majority of toys there are mid-70's on. So there are toys related to "The Six Million Dollar Man", as an example. There were some older 50's era pieces as well. And, like i said, some comics. If I had more time to look I would've stayed longer, but time's the one thing I didn't have. Speaking of which, they were out of the one thing I was looking for. Not a problem, though. If it's not there I won't be tempted to buy it. One more thing: They opened up a 'dollar store' version of the shop a few doors down. It has what you'd expect to find there.

She and her parents are visiting the D.C. area from out of state, and visiting a toy store was at the top of her list. (We made plans yesterday to spend the afternoon in Old Town partially so we could take her to this toy store.) We weren't greeted when we entered the store, and one of the two employees made no effort to conceal the fact that she was following us around while we browsed various sections of the store, rummaging around pointlessly with items in the exact places where we were looking, but never asking if we needed help at any point during this charade. When I finally couldn't help but ask the employee what was going on, and why she had followed us around so closely but hadn't taken the the trouble to ask if we needed any assistance, the store's owner (or perhaps manager), who might have instructed the employee to closely follow customers she believed might be planning to shoplift, simply frowned at us from behind the counter, and made no effort to apologize. (My brother, I, and my niece were dressed in outfits that I thought looked absolutely perfect for a day shopping in Old Town [I've lived in Alexandria for the past fifteen years], but maybe I was wrong.) There's a toy store and children's clothing boutique approximately one and a half blocks east of Pippin Toys called the Pink & Brown Boutique, where we made several purchases, stopping on the way from Misha's Coffee to our destination of Pippin Toys and being pleasantly surprised by its existence. Both the toy and clothing selections at the Pink & Brown Boutique are impeccably curated, and the store's owner is incredibly friendly and doesn't treat her customers (which every small store needs these days, I'd imagine) like potential shoplifters. She'll continue to receive my family's business in the future, and I won't be visiting Pippin Toys again.
