If you're reading this review, chances are it's because your Phillip Island Tour bus has dropped you off in this random area for dinner at a restaurant of your choosing. I would recommend The Fat Seagull because: 1. Food was not bad, expect to spend $25 AUD per person. I would have loved to try their signature Coat of Arms pizza (half emu, half kangaroo), but they were sold out early. Instead, we enjoyed the baramundi fish and shrimp entrees. 2. Nice, clean atmosphere. Table cloth & wine glasses kind-of place, but everyone was in casual attire. 3. You really don't have many options in the area. For a small town this restaurant does not do badly - we were in search for dinner as one does and considering the options on the two main streets where restaurants were most apparent this seemed the best choice. The choices are pretty straight forward - pasta or pizza - I went for the seafood linguini - and it was pretty decent considering the neighbourhood. We got seating outside - even though there were five of us and it was peak time we were lucky to get that! And they also had a pretty economical deal going that evening - I think a Tuesday and for Australian standards that was the bargain. So why 3 stars? Well firstly the seagulls. At first it's pretty cool they come up close and you are feeling closer to nature - but then they get kinda aggressive ! Scarily so - they were attacking my friend - no joke and am pretty sure plucked a few prawns off his pasta bowl. So that was strange but memorable ;) And most people at this intersection of restaurants by the coast are to be fair tourists because they want to see the penguins - and we were guiltily the same. It's cool but it would be nice to hear your own thoughts whilst you eat sometimes. read more

Verdict: While touring Philip Island, our tour guide told us that The Fat Seagull dished up some pretty good pizza, so as a group on a quick break we decided to give it a go. At the end of the day, while pretty standard as far as pizza goes, one particular feature blew me away... Star 1: How was the service and atmosphere? We ordered take-away while still on the bus and picked it up, however, the atmosphere appeared to be fine and the service was quick. The Fat Seagull really does has a fantastic location on the main strip (Thompson Ave) near the harbor. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Since we ordered what must have been 10 Large Pizzas, I have no idea what the cost was unfortunately. However, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was reasonable. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? This is where I was really in for a treat. Coming from America, we typically have either your standard Dominos, Deep Dish or New York Style massive slices. Nice and warm family atmosphere. Decor is a little dated but staff was friendly. Not the most professional place but the food was pretty good. We tried the spaghetti marinara, Tom yum muscles, Pollo Alla mare and the oriental chicken salad. The seafood was fresh. Not the best spirit selection but it was adequate. It's reasonably priced and portions were generous. You have to get your own water though. Not a big deal. read more

A crazy good name that's worth checking out. A varied menu with selections like "yobbo", "Mexican bum burner" and "meat" pizza. Or for something truly Australian you can try the "Coat of Arms", which contains roo and emu. I devoured a collection of three curries with basmati rice, poppadom and raita. They were thick, tender and perfectly cooked and wouldn't feel out of place served from a Bombay street stall. Staff are friendly and attentive, so no issues with the service, and answered all of our many inquiries. Free wifi is also on offer and great for when you're travelling. read more

It's true, they do have pretty good pizza for being on an island. I'd been eating a lot of pizza on my Australian trip and yet I got pizza again when we stopped here for dinner. The servers were great and there were veggie options to be had (could have gotten pasta too, but it was really hot and I needed some comfort food). I went boring with the gourmet margherita and the husband gout the tandoori and both were tasty (though he liked his tandoori pizza in Cairns better, this one was still okay). We went quite early so we didn't get any crowds, just a few families and some guys in the back who were pretty chill. read more

If you're happy to wait 40 minutes for a mediocre pizza then this is your place to go. Made a booking at 8pm, the place is half empty and it still takes a very log time. Great variety of food : Italian, Thai, Fish: Beef. At reasonable prices and each prepared as though it was their only specialty. Also light meals, pizza and kids plates. We have tried something different each time and always been very pleased. Friendly staff and pretty fast service as well. We have been disappointed in some other, pricier, well recommended restaurants in Cowes, but never here. I booked a table at this restaurant a week before going, the booking was arranged through the Dimmi reservation service, upon arrival at the Fat seagull, the staff had no knowledge of who I was and had no idea about any booking under my name, I was able to be given a table after waiting approx. 10 mins waiting for a table to become vacant, I purchased a steak which was well under cooked (with blood still coming out of it) very watery gravy and vegetables which had only been heated in a microwave, it was a shocking meal, would NEVER return read more

The pasta here are beautiful. Because I love crab so I ordered a linguine Pasta Di Granchio. Absolutely Love it.. It even better when they have $12 Tuesday special for any Pizza or pasta. read more

If you enjoy spending your money at places where you will be spoken to rudely or treated like it is an inconvenience to have you there, then this is the place for you if you enjoy spending your money at places where you are given a list of desserts only to be told you can't have the one you chose because the cakes in the fridge need to be sold first- then this is the place for you if you enjoy spending your money at a place where you ask for the manger twice and when they come out their attitude is more rude than the service, then this is the place for you (manager may have fixed dessert problem but created another issue with extremely unfriendly attitude) I understand the pressure they are under as it was extremely busy but customer service skills of both person taking order and manager leaves me speechless (well maybe not completely speechless ). In fairness the waitress's are friendly mine was a little clumsy - as I ended up with a saucer full of coffee when my coffee arrived (I didn't complain because her apology was friendly and genuine) maybe the waitress's can train the manager on friendly attitude If you want to get a better unbiased view of what to expect , go on their FB website and look up their responses to negative reviews - it's so appalling how they try to ridicule customers instead of focusing on improving customer service! read more

Well, let me start with the service or its lack of. It took three attempts just to get someone to go to our table to either get our order and drinks, because for a good 20 mins no one bothered to check on us. By the way they sat us in the back room right by the bathroom door; so nice of them to place us by the one room where smells emanates at the same time we might have been eating. Then there's the food. Presentation was good, I give them that; however, it was just a big disappointment. We ordered the "meat" pizza and asked not to add the lamb and substitute for some extra chicken. Well, I guess someone does not know how to follow directions or read. The taste was just a big "blah", so bland. I also tried the buffalo chicken wings. For what they charge they could have thrown a couple more on the plate. Taste wise? Another "meh" it could have been better. My other companions seemed pleased with their entrees but no one had that "omg! This is delicious" face nor commented on their dish. The burger joint down the road from them had a more enticing smell to their food than this place. So I would venture to say, save your money and go somewhere else, it will save you time and money, specially time since they're too important to actually go and serve you. read more
