But for those who seek additional catholic education and spiritual growth in Spanish, this church is not ideal. I suggest you drive to Chowchilla as they offer an excellent program, a safe space without damaging you. The problem lies with one former Prayer Group leader T.F. who is a bully and damaged many parishioners when she used her pulpit to spew her hate. Many questioned why parishioners stopped attending the weekly classes and she and the priest who was tasked to investigate the issue indicated "obedience" was the issue, as in the parishioners did not want to follow arbitrary rules she imposed on those that wished to attend. The problem is that many people who seek spiritual growth are often damaged souls who seek a safe space to overcome their traumas. T.F. lacks emotional intelligence to discern that her approach to parishioners is hurtful. It's her way or the highway and the phrase "you attract more bees with honey than vinegar" definitely applies to her. She attends mass regularly and is involved in many church groups but what she has is in her heart dark and her actions are unchrisitan at times. She has now been promoted to assist the Fresno Archdiocese director who oversees the education and prayer groups. There is no hope that a parish priest will intervene to ensure no bullying or emotional trauma occurs as the principal priest once scolded parishioners during mass for not joining the Spanish 11am chorus due to a known problem with the director being a bully. He indicated the director may yell at the chorus but he can sing. I know for a fact that one of the women who tried to join the chorus for Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration was a victim of domestic violence and got yelled at. She never returned after one practice. The priest's scolding came on the day when the liturgy was about "Love is patient, love is kind". The gaul that a priest would chastise parishioners for choosing not to be bullied yet condone bullying behavior is typical of the patriarchy found in the church. If love is patient, love is kind, then why not ask the Spanish chorus director to show some patience and kindness. So if you need to attend mass, feel free to attend. But if you choose to be active in the prayer group with T.F. being an active participant, be for warned you are likely to be bullied and traumatized especially if she and her retinue target you because they simply don't like you. It has been said of her that "she flips her tortillas with a gun". God help the prayer group and all those that have been and will be subjected to her tyranny and emotional abuse.

I am going back to my hometown roots next week, specifically to this little church by the side of…read morethe road. The church is celebrating its 60th anniversary, although it's actually 61 years old. Mmm, maybe that's how I should count my birthdays, but I digress... My mother was one of 12 charter members and I grew up in this church starting with the cradle roll when I was about a week old. My sister was married here and I attended the wedding in a bassinet. Yes, there is a big age difference. Unlike the stratospheric nuptials of today that are held in an outdoor venue, my sister's wedding was held in the sanctuary and everyone proceeded to the fellowship hall for cake and punch afterwards. What happened to those kinds of weddings where you don't have to travel for 3 hours, hang around for another 6 and then wish you had a hotel room so you don't have to make the drive home. Again, I digress... I went to Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Girls Auxiliary at this little church. I memorized scripture, made crafts, and was baptized. Births, deaths, weddings, funerals, they all occured in the life of the membership. Then, I moved away. But, the little church remained, and continued to do its job of helping souls find their way. After 61 years it's still there and I'm going back to remember all it has been, celebrate what it is, and rejoice in all that it will be. Definitely a 5 star place.
