I've not made it to Africa, though have traveled widely in Asia, and the outside felt totally authentic, being similar to bars and restaurants I've eaten in abroad. Even outside, you are sheltered from the rain, and inside, where the buffet is served, it's warm and cosy, with live music of an evening, and the most amazing spread of food. I've been a number of times since that first dinner, having returned in the day with my dog, as it's dog friendly if you're happy to sit outside - they even bring a bowl of water for our four legged friends! I've had lunch there, and the most fabulous afternoon cream tea, and cake, whilst the choice is limited, what they offer is very tasty (and I'm a fan of cake!) I loved it that much the first night, that I've refused to go there for a meal again, as I'm going for my 40th, which happens to fall on a Thursday, and looking forward to sharing the experience with close friends. The service is always friendly. It's not always super fast, as it runs on Kenyan time, so this isn't the place to go in a rush. Indeed, why would you? My sporadic visits since have revealed The Roadhouse to be a friendly enough venue with the ambience set to old school/biker . A good sound system and a fairly standard but well priced bar make this a good place to see a band. The schedule seems to consist of a mix of up and coming indie/rock acts and tribute acts of classic rock bands with acoustic nights on a thursday. They also offer music tuition services but I can't comment on these as I haven't had need to use them. The venue side of the business I can recommend, providing the style of act playing that night is to your tastes.

It was a clean plate of food with a healthy sized burger that tasted fresh and wholesome, the way a good burger should be. It was only until after I had devoured my meal that I noticed the large selections of Ales they have on offer from breweries across the country. My friend indulged in a reasonably priced IPA whilst I had a Coke as I had to drive home. Well, the car got left outside overnight, I couldn't drive home in the end. Crowds of chain smoking revelers outside were anticipating the arrival of a band at one of the Hares' two live music rooms. I noticed that UB40's first ever gig took place here in 1979 - commemorated recently with a PRS Music Heritage award and plaque - to establishing itself as one of the top small music venues in Birmingham. We were in for a good night! We had a few more ales and the band came on in the Main Room. The acoustics and smaller intimate feel of the venue put a big smile on my face, so did the band, so did the night. The Hare and Hounds is definitely the place to visit.

Like so many of the great venues in Birmingham, the exterior is smart and well kept (giving off a "traditional village pub" vibe). The interior isn't hipster, but rather twee and portraying a feel of antiquity. There are comfy booths and plentiful tables and chairs, but this venue can get very busy due to it's reputation and collection of fiercely loyal regulars. It has a smoking area just off the street (at the side of the pub on York Road), which is a great place to start chatting with the other frequenters. Last Friday we ended up having great conversations with total strangers about the cost of the Bloody Mary in London and Don Letts (who is due to be appearing at the venue soon). As with so many of the bars in this "up and coming" area, a drink aint cheap. It certainly isn't as bad as some Central bars - but you are looking over £3 a pint .It was £1.90 a half of guinness (rather than £1.80 as previously stated), making a full pint of the black stuff £3.90. A double vodka and tonic was north of £5. That being said, I still believe the venue is worthy of 4* (for it's fantastic atmosphere and well kept decor). If you are a keen Muso, I would recommend regularly checking the listings. There are some really great events being put on right through the year with big and small names rocking the H&H. If you're in Kings Heath, I recommend this as a bar to check out - but being based on the High Street and York Road; you are spoiled for choice in this area.

I wasn't surprised to see they sell everything that you'd see from a bar but I was a little surprised to find they sell traditional ale. Shirley has a lot of pubs but not many of them sell ale! The staff are friendly but I've been in there a few times and felt it isn't a place for young generations. The atmosphere is more suited to seniors and middle aged people. The pub is tiny so it's a good job they have outdoor seating for those lovely Summer days. The decor is nice with its red theme and various badges, drinks logos and various other things on the walls and above the bar. The women's restroom needed some life injected into them! Being in them felt like being back in the school in the 90s; everything was tiled, the tissue felt like sandpaper and there was a cold feel. I know the bathroom in a pub (or anywhere in public) isn't at the top of your list of things to care about but isn't it welcoming when you walk into a public restroom and think "ooh this is nice"? They have a medium sized function room as well with tables and chairs but again it's like they ignored the decor here and focused more on the main pub area. However I don't know if they went with the beige theme to keep the decor neutral. Overall I have always been welcomed at The Red Lion but I think the pub needs to have an extension so there's more space to move around and the rest of the pub i.e. the restrooms needs to be modernised.

The Tower of Song is an independent live music venue, run as a true labour of love. Tom Martin is a…read moreveteran touring player who saw that musicians wanted somewhere to play where the music was the focus of the night, not just a side-show to an evening of drinking. I went down to The Tower of Song on the quaintly titled River Rea Roots night. There is an open mic session, then a featured band play an hour slot. After, the open mic runs until closing. It's a simultaneously usual and unusual bunch of people who play that night. A 18 year old plays and sings some slightly out of tune Blues covers, but he sings them with such soul that he has the crowd in the palm of his hand. Organiser Bill O'Brien plays a couple of Birmingham-centric songs. A blokey duo of guitarist and harmonica player in their early fifties play some uptempo folky tunes, and to end a woman sings some proper, proper old folk songs acapella. Sandwiched inbetween a signed Scottish touring band called Panda Su export some gentle acousti-tronica to the audience. There are no egos here and no pretense here. Instead there is a supportive atmosphere that's a million miles away from scenester-ism, taking music back to it's roots as a tool of expression and affirmation.

The Tower of Song isn't one of Birmingham's most well known music venues, but that's exactly what…read moregives the space a slightly different edge, and a different atmosphere from people who you don't usually see at the more well known establishments. The audience are generally of the older generation, but that's not to say that young'uns aren't welcomed at all. In fact, as long as you are a fan of music (paticularly acoustic and roots music), you're sure not to go wrong upon entering. More so, the venue isn't even that hard to find, especially if you live in South Birmingham, it's just down the road from Cotteridge. From the outside, the venue has an 80s/90s look about it, probably because the décor hasn't been altered since then, but again, that adds to the unintentional quirk of the place. And on the inside, the walls are covered in stencils of iconic musicians, from Bob Marley to John Lennon to Jim Morrison, making it clear that The Tower of Song is serious about its music. The room itself is very small, with tables and chairs intimately facing the stage. This makes sure that your focus is on the live music, rather than on socialising. And of course, in my opinion, you go to a gig to see the performance, and not to constantly socialise while a band is playing. All in all, Tower of Song is a great little place to discover some amazing local talent. I personally came across some very talented young creatives, who were performing live during a South Birmingham Community Radio event.

Overall it had a nice chilled out vibe, unlike some of the city centre sport bars which can get a bit overwhelming at times. On a Sunday they have a free music event upstairs which plays everything from Jazz and soul to rock and country music. Personally I wish it was on every night as it really does provide the perfect soundtrack to such a characteristic classic venue.

Even though I don't get down there as much as I used to (when I lived a few hundred years away!) I'm always greeted by name by both the bar staff and some of the locals. It's a genuinely friendly place with great beer that is a PROPER PUB. Some might call it an 'Old Man's Pub', which is completely fair, but that's what is so great about it. It's a particularly great place to watch sport, and football and cricket in particular. The locals are a knowledgeable crowd when it comes to both games and there is always a lively and friendly discussion to be had. They have recently started doing a different range of foods. You can get a pretty decent roast on a Sunday for around £4 and there is often a curry night that is well worth a visit. The curry is cooked by the landlord's wife and is excellent home cooked Indian food. The only word of caution I would offer about this place is to be careful when leaving late at night. It's not in the best or safest part of town and there have been a few nasty incidents in the park behind the place. These are pretty rare, in fairness, but I would recommend taking a cab home, or else going in sufficient numbers and with your wits about you, if travelling on foot.

In a sea of bars and gastropubs serving £12 'craft' cocktails, the Spotted Dog serves as a landmark of sanity. The pub has a charmingly worn interior that is ridiculously clean for a boozer in Digbeth. Table tops adorned with candles sit inside, while a side door through the lounge exits onto what is probably the best covered garden in the whole of Brum. The drinks menu is simple yet satisfying. You'll find some of the usual suspects like Guiness on draft in addition to several rotating real ales. Liquor covers a breadth of options, with regular specials. On jazz night (Tuesday), Bushmills Irish Whiskey can be had for a pound and certain ales for £2.50. Even on a normal night, The Spotted Dog is one of the best values in Birmingham. The pub opens at 5PM most nights (sometimes later in the winter). Crisps are offered as the only snack, so you'll want to plan for food accordingly. The customer service is above expectations. A friend and I stopped in one evening right as the pub opened to sip some whiskey. As the first and only customers for over an hour, John shared with us some special Polish vodka a personal friend had brought to him. One of his bartenders asked what music to put on over the sound system and his reply was 'anything you want, as long as it's Bo Diddley'. There's a nice smoking hut type thing with sofas and four walls that means you don't have to worry about completely braving the elements when you're trying to suck down some nicotine.

Food is tasty BBQ style smoked meat and pizzas made in the pizza oven sitting roaring away in the back. I had the smoked meat platter and everything on offer had a deep smoky flavour with plenty of "narl". The Dark Horse lives up to it's name however by having a large space upstairs that they use when the night gets later and everyone gets their dancing shoes out, we had a great night listening to the house band and the DJ after that.

We had a server come to our table to take our drink and food order, which is a nice option instead of being at the mercy of the bartender. We started with a round of margaritas. I thought they were delicious, but my company thought they needed more tequila. We had 3 tapas dishes: mussels, butternut squash and feta, and some lightly fried halloumi cheese. The food came out quickly and was very fresh. No heat lamps here! My main was a mushroom and hallioumi burger with a side of chips. As you can see, I love halloumi. The burger was good but I wish there was more cheese and less mushroom. The dessert menu was not much as they only had two options the night we dined. It has a great cocktail menu for a little pub type place. Margaritas, martinis, and adult milkshakes! I stuck with margaritas as I loved them. And the final bonus was the 10% discount with my independent Birmingham card! At first we felt a little odd as it was so quiet (it was a Tuesday night after all), but people soon started to come in. Staff were very friendly and attentive, I ordered the chicken which came in a creamy mushroom sauce with mash and veg and my other half ordered the steak and chips, both were visually impressive and tasted amazing! We tried a bit of each other's meals and I think the chicken swung it slightly although the steak was cooked to perfection. Initially my boyfriend thought he didn't have enought chips but then struggled to finish them so I think the portions were spot on. We had a lovely bottle of sauvignon blanc which was fresh, fruity and light. For dessert we made short work of white blondie and the suprisingly delicious chocolate and beetroot brownie - yum! I was very impressed with Fletcher's and will definitely heading back there soon!
