It's decorated and laid out in that 'chain pub' style although I don't think it is part of a chain. There were three cask beers on when we visited, my Cumberland Ale was smashing and my husband's Coniston Bluebird got the thumbs up - Beacon was the other beer. There's a pool table and their sign says they have a 'Clatterbang Alley' though what or where that was I didn't find out :-) They're certainly working hard to woo trade with quiz nights, games nights, live music etc. and we got a warm welcome. All in all a pleasant enough pub that I'll happily return to.

I settled for a Steak and Ale Suet Pudding... before it even arrived I knew I'd be in for a treat, everyone around us were eagerly tucking into there dishes. In fact, my first date with Linda was at the plough, in August of 1974. We were students then, so had a tight budget, so we kept our appetite under control and enjoyed the best Fish and chips, Cumberland sausage, meat pies and mushy peas.... Linda and I got married in 1976, 3 months after our getting our PHD and Masters degrees respectively; we worked in three Continents Europe, Middle East (Asia) and America. We always had a soft spot for the Plough Inn at Galgate, it remained as one of the best places we got to know. Having lived in Michigan USA (since 1985) with our three children, my daughter Carol turned 18 in 2004 so we decided to take her on a pilgrimage to the plough Inn since the legal drinking age in America is 21. We invited a few of our friends from all over the UK for a reunion after 30 years and had a great time (picture attached). Carol, my daughter started where her parents left off. We enjoyed every minute of being there and the food was as expected, second to none in England. Life was great and our memories are only kept at this pleasant location that gave us Boddingtons and Lagers to forget about the week's science overload doing Biochemistry; Of course, there were times that we only had Shandy and Lager & Lime on Saturdays because of a typical Friday night student pub-crawls on campus . In summary, never hesitate about the Plough Inn, Food, scenery and friendly staff will impress you. We are retiring by the end of this year and we will be visiting our favorite spot for probably the last time. Congratulations to the Plough for maintaining our memories by having such a wonderful business. What else does any man want? We spent the remainder of our holidays here, every evening. Nestling by a brook full of eels. The pubs dog, Jasper, loved to just stand in the cooling water on the hot evenings that we experienced this July. Sufficient room to sit outside with plenty of tables. Service is second to none. Professional, efficient and, more to the point, friendly. Great selection of real ales, my favourite was the Cromwell. Now to the reason for frequenting this hostelry, the food. A reasonable menu taking into account the position of this pub. A good varied choice of fresh seafood, burgers, curries and steaks. We tried most of them and they all were extremely tasty. All cooked to order. Great mussels in white wine. Behind the bar is a blackboard describing their Naga 'Viper' curry made with, 'officially', the hottest chilli pepper. Underneath is written 'Curries ordered 528, curries eaten 400' LOL. I love hot curries but, even I, would not attempt it. We hope to make a return visit next year. The pub itself isn't as big as it seems from outside, with much of the pub area divided into single-spaced, window-seated tables. On the plus side, that means it won't get too noisy when the placed is packed. The real ale selection is certainly adequate [I've seen better, and much worse, the latter more often], the staff generally nice and helpful, and the real ales being kept fresh. There's a cool, homely, welcoming ambience about the place that lifts your spirits as soon as you walk in the door. The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. You cant really get a better recommendation than that can you??

However, the food was not my biggest impression. What made the experience so enjoyable was the staff, ambiance and live entertainment. Our server was very friendly, but even better, the super nice manager stopped by our table to chat and to make sure that everything was good. He was so welcoming that it immediately made me like the pub. The ambiance is warm and cozy. If we lived nearby, this would be our local place. It felt comfortable. We listened to a senior citizen Dixieland Jazz band while we ate. They were fantastic and just seemed to be having so much fun performing, that their joy was infectious.
