In Winter when you find a pub opened in this area of the UK, you feel very lucky!…read more It was a cute little pub to get ourself warmed and something to eat. They serve classic, cheap comfort food which was what we were looking for in this cold weather. Both pies were very good, especially the fish pie, onions rings were ok. The best dish was for sure their homemade brownie served warm with some ice cream on top.

We had very mixed service and distinctly average food; one of us had the veggie bean burger (allegedly with salad) which was absolutely awful - it looked like it was a frozen burger straight out of a packet :-( There wasn't any fresh salad with it at all - it was some limp lettuce and a slice of tomato in the burger bun. This is pretty poor in this day and age as a vegetarian offering! The fish and chips were slightly better but nothing special. We assume the popularity is more to do with location than the quality of the food, attention to detail, presentation or the service. To make matters worse, we had asked the lady behind the bar when she took our dinner order if they still had sticky toffee pudding (as it was on the specials board) and she said yes, there was lots of it left so we wouldn't have a problem. By 7pm when we had finished dinner and tried to order dessert she looked blankly at us and said they didn't have any left. We thought she was joking as she had known we would be ordering it. Anywhere else would likely have asked us earlier if we still wanted it once she knew it was running low (bearing in mind we were sitting at the tiny table directly next to the bar)....or even better she might have reserved a piece each for us as all 3 of us had said we would like it). To be honest, with the awful veggie burger and frozen packet chips it might have been a godsend that they had run out of sticky toffee pudding. It would probably would have been just as disappointing! We would definitely not recommend and would not return.

We stayed at hotel for 4 nights. High levels of noise until close to midnight all but 2 night…read more Rooms are over the pub, and that should be made known @booking. They were unwilling to change our room. The bathroom/towel heater was broken whole time. Breakfast good, as was dinner but a surprise service fee for dinner appeared at check out. Again, this should be made explicit. On the whole overpriced and mediocre or less room.

I used to enjoy and love this place…read more Being in Cornwall again last week a friend asked me if I wanted to go for a meal and we decided to try Gurnard Head again. We drove up on Monday afternoon 25th Oct to book a table, for Tuesday night. The front window is FULL of Michelin, recommended stickers, and every other possible award or recommendation possible, in fact so many it looks a mess. Is it me? Have I got two heads? No, but they are so rude, unhelpful and would go as far as to say they look at you as if you are so beneath them they do not even want to speak to you. My friend (who is an actor and the friendliest person you could meet) spoke to the bar staff, asking if it was possible to book a table, (so it is not just me) the end result was he said did not want to book after how we were spoken to by the staff. We were told we could ONLY book for 8.30, not, we are sorry that is the only space we have etc as most restaurants would do, we asked to see a menu, and were told no, as it changes every day!! They just seem so unwilling to treat you as a customer more as an inconvenience to them. We asked about eating in the bar, and they said at the bar we said no at a table in the bar, and the barman snapped in the bar at a table same thing, well unless you check it you may end up eating at the bar, there is no need to be so snappy and rude. It is too late to arrive to find you are having a meal actually sitting at the bar What a way to run a business, do the owners know? I wanted to eat and spend money with them, but was driven away by attitude. Why would you spend money in a place that treats you like that? The young blond tall barman we dealt with made us feel we were not welcome, and spoke to us like dirt, we had a coffee and left, have they no idea how to serve customers, do they care? I think not, they seem to have so many reviews that they do not care, I wish I could witness the Michelin reviewers visits, as they must know who they are, as no way on earth is this a friendly place. The bar looked very tatty, I would hope it is called shabby chic, but think it is more just tatty, worn and shabby. On a positive note a young chef came to the bar to check the evenings bookings and he smiled over at us, and a customer passing through asked him if he was the chef and complemented him on the fabulous meal they had just had. My question to the owners is, are you aware how many customers are being driven away by your rude staff, or are the rude staff the owners? We went away and went to a different restaurant, and had a great meal and friendly service. Best to stay away from Gurnard Head, far better and friendlier places to eat in Cornwall.

We had a large group and despite pre-booking had been crammed in next to another incredibly large and loud group so it was rather claustrophobic. In defence of the staff, they dealt with the large group near us very well as they seemed to have arrived with more people than they booked for. Staff were friendly and apologetic to us but unfortunately we were still left a little uncomfortable, especially as the room quickly became very warm due to having so many people in it so we were forced to open the fire door for some air. The food was exactly what we needed after a long day, a mixture of burgers, salads and pub classics. There was also a carvery available which a few of my friends took advantage of instantly disappearing off and returning with mounds of meat, gravy, Yorkshire puddings and all the trimmings. It would be impossible for me to criticise the portions. I had the "Wolf Burger" which thankfully wasn't made from a canine, but was a juicy chicken breast instead. Prices were a tiny bit expensive, but not as much as the rest of the Scilly isles (£9.95 for a burger) so I would recommend this as somewhere to eat for those visiting the Scilly isles on a budget but who want a nice pub lunch. If I could I would give it 3.5 stars not 3, but I don't think it quite earns 4.

But inside was fine. We went for lunch and it was fairly quiet. Friendly enough welcome behind the bar. There was a big TV on the wall showing sports. A bar menu serving the usual range of pub food. We had a bacon and cheese baguette with side salad and a steak and ale pie with chips and both were typical pub fare. Both arrived in about 10 mins. We had a table by the window and watched the world go by along the high street. So overall, an acceptable place to stop for a pub lunch.
