We thought we'd try out the newly refurbished Fleece for lunch and were very disappointed. We had previously been very happy with the standard of service and quality of meals prior to the fire in 2015, however, our recent experience there did not live up to our earlier visits.
The interior has been tastefully furnished, however, we were initially shown to a table on the upper level, which wasn't even set for a meal. The area was empty apart from ourselves, even although there were empty tables in the main dining room. The table was too high for the bench we were sitting on, even for my husband who is 6 feet tall! I asked if we could move to a table on the lower area and we were given a more comfortable table. Unfortunately, our starters when they arrived were almost inedible. We had both ordered the pea and potato pakoras but what arrived were 5 tiny burnt morsels of batter. The menu stated that they came with a yogurt dressing but you had to struggle to find it, there being less than a teaspoonful on each plate. The waitress did apologise, as did the manager, who said we would not be charged the £4.50 per starter, which when we saw what arrived was a ridiculous price. Our main courses were thankfully much better, haddock with a cheese and breadcrumb topping, however, even this dish was nothing special. There was very little sauce and almost no flavour of cheese, though the fish was well cooked. We also had to wait an incredibly long time for the meal to arrive. The following day we visited a restaurant in Ambleside in the Lake District and although it was very busy, the difference in the quality of meal and service was incredible, which highlighted our unfortunate experience the day before at the Fleece. read more
