Worth the hike from the city! Why? I've been shopping for a new acoustic 6 string guitar at Guitar Center and Melodee Music and wanted to sample additional brands and tonewood choices. Fret Shop didn't disappoint. I got to spend some quality time with an Eastman spruce acoustic, a Nixon sinker redwood/mahogony acoustic, a Nixon spruce/Brazilian rosewood acoustic, and a Huss & Dalton sinker redwood acoustic. I was particularly impressed with the 2 Nixon guitars of which they are an exclusive dealer. This place carries some great brands like Huss & Dalton, Guild, and Cordoba but they are clearly a diehard Eastman dealer. There were so many Eastman models here (acoustic guitars, archtop guitars, mandolins). The prices were very reasonable considering the quality and beauty of these Eastman instruments. If you're looking for an acoustic guitar in the $700-$1100 range, come check out these options before buying a factory made Fender, Gibson, Breedlove, or Taylor guitar in that price range. You are likely to find a better guitar for your money with Eastman. Eastman guitars (and most Cordoba classical guitars) are reasonably priced because they are made in China where labor is cheap. But although all the Chinese made electric guitars I've sampled at Guitar Center have been crappy, the situation with Eastman and Cordoba guitars is just the opposite. Apparently both these brands have real luthiers and guitar making know-how which was apparent to me within minutes of playing their products. I predict that 20 years from now Chinese luthiers will be widely respected and the prices of their instruments will go up to reflect that. For now, good values are easy to be found with the Eastman and Cordoba Chinese guitars. If you have an acoustic guitar budget in the $2500-$4500 range I'd say the Huss & Dalton and Nixon brands are a step above Eastman and will provide more exotic tonewood choices. I called here to ask about a guitar they were advertising on the internet. While I didn't end up buying the guitar, I do want to say that the person I spoke with was sincere and pretty darn honest...not something I take for granted. I have bought a number of guitars over the years; I prefer to deal with smaller shops like this one, because the salesmen at the national chains are, well, salesmen. Many are not to be trusted, and all too often, they don't know much about what they are selling. And, of course, not all smaller dealers are forthright and honest either. This shop is cool! My husband wanted to upgrade my guitar for Christmas, so he called and met with Jon ahead of time, Jon helped him pick out some guitars in the intended price range. When My "better half" took me to the Fret Shop, Jon was wonderful. I sat and played 5 guitars, narrowing down to 2... I loved the fact that he was really laid back and let me play till my heart was content. ( unlike the salesmen at "the corporate store who shall not be named"... pushy sales people... .) When choosing a guitar, it's personal. You have to let it sing to you, and not be rushed. Jon let me hang out on one of his comfy couches and told me he was avail. if I had any questions. And when I did, he was very knowledgeable and helpful ; especially on the pros and cons of my final 2 selections. With his help, I was able to focus on my priorities in a guitar, and make a final decision.... But the story doesn't end there! I took the guitar home ( Eastman E20 om)- put lighter strings on, and realized the action was a little higher than I play. Five days later, I am back in the store, and Jon is adjusting the guitar to my custom fit. I did not have to leave it. He is a great guy, and knows his stuff. Kinda bummed though... a friend of his came in and started playing - I would have loved to hang out longer and listen to them jam... what amazing Talent in that store! On both occasions the person in the shop (the owner) looked at us as though we were coming to rob the place. As the song goes: "Paranoia runs deep...". Not a friendly place. Spent my money elsewhere.
