Great texture, nicely flavored, and the sourdough bun is swirled with vegan mayo that also passes muster. Side salad and a generous helping of fries rounds out the £7.95 meal, and it was enough for me for a light lunch and dinner. Great seating area with plenty of light, and the vibe made me do doubletakes to make sure I hadn't warped back to Berkeley. The garden is lovely as well, with chairs and tables and benches scattered about on a lively backyard. But Jesus the cashier's attitude sucks. It's like she hates being there. It's a small cafe, comfortable seating inside and some lovely tables in a tiny front yard. The cafe serves only vegetarian and vegan food and profits go to St Margaret's House which this cafe is a part of. I just wanted an evening coffee after my museum (Childhood) visit and this place on yelp looked more exciting than the standard in house Benugo. I'm so glad I went here, lovely coffee, polite staff and an amazing coffee walnut cupcake chockfull of walnuts. It would take a lot for me to visit a vegetarian place for a meal, but I'd go back for coffee and a pastry anytime. read more

Avoid if you can't stand inauthentic vegan places. The service was pretentious and I felt like they didn't care and were acting like I didn't even exist. We weren't told our drinks were ready or where to collect them so were left waiting for them at our table for 10 minutes wondering why we don't have our drinks yet. The vegan burger is overpriced and the tomatoes it comes with are the end bits/leftovers. My friend ordered the same burger and it also came with two tiny end bits and not proper juicy tomato slices. This is stingy and nasty considering the price they charge for it. It is a reflection of their poor service and of the fact that this place is all about maximising profit by using "vegan" as a marketing trick while offering substandard food, drinks and service. This place is such a hidden gem, especially for a vegan like me. For starters, the entire menu was not actually vegan with a few vegetarian options. I went there for the full English and it did not disappoint. The veggie sausages and mushrooms stole the show. Got greedy and ordered the vegan pancakes too, and I was handsomely rewarded for my gluttony. They were crispy around the edge and yet soft and fluffy in the middle. The location itself is very spacious too. Don't be fooled by the small basement entrance. It has a lovely outdoor seating area too, which I'm sure is packed during summer. But the nicest thing about this place is that it opens at 9! Even on Sundays! And bank holidays. With the full menu being served since the time the doors open. How awesome is that? Granted this does not always conjure up images of a tasty feast for all of us but the food is really delicious even if you are not a vegan or vegetarian. This is great place for lunch - the soups are changed daily and hot meals are recommended. If you do not want a meal this is a nice stop for coffee and a cake. There is a small patio in front for with outdoor seating and a little lounge area with papers available for reading.The glass back is set into a garden and the atmosphere is green -in a good way. A hidden gem for vegan and vegetarian fare, I always overhear "ooohs and ahhhs" from such people when they are brought her for the first time... vegans especially can't take their eyes away from the amazing array of cakes and other baked goods that they can finally think about tucking into. The place has that distinctively "organic" aura about it, and even though I'm a vegetarian, what *really* keeps me coming back here is my fondness for how calm and bright and open this place is; the back wall is virtually one large windowpane looking out into an unkempt garden, and the ceilings are high, so the inside has the sunny and airy feeling of an atrium. I'm always surprised how much sunlight manages to fill the room... Gallery Cafe never fails to provide a nice counterpoint to London's pervasive gloom. I've always enjoyed both the coffee and the service here (some are volunteers - since the café itself is actually a charitable organization that donates to social services), but mostly I like how relaxed it is... and that I can sit here for hours and hours writing away, while the crowds come and go during peak times, and nobody bats an eye. It is located just off Cambridge Heath Road on roughly half way point between Bethnal Green and Cambridge Heath stations. It's a little hard to find as it's off the main bus road, and is attached to a rather obscure non-commercial looking building. The sign is visible from outside but the actual entrance is on the lower ground, which makes it less noticeable. Do not be discouraged by all of these natural obstacles. This café is very good. If you summon enough courage to get past the rather modest entrance area and push through the door green door, you will be looking into a surprisingly spacious restaurant with functional black round tables laid out along the length of the long dining area. On the white walls hang some pictures, presumably the name sake of the place. Towards the end of the restaurant, there is a small, slightly raised dining area, which overlooks a small garden. The natural light that pours in from the big windows helps brighten up this already pleasant space. I've heard this place also hosts various music events. So I'd imagine this small conservatory area will turn into a little stage on such occasions. I went in for a weekend breakfast. I ordered full English breakfast. I was very satisfied with the quality and portion of food. The vegetarian sausage was firm and had a nice herby flavour. The sourdough bread was crispy outside, and chewy inside. The visually most interesting item in this dish was scrambled tofu. It was fried with thinly chopped onions and carrots, seasoned with some spices. It was good but more on bland side. The portion was also not bad for the price I paid. The service was also efficient and professional. I certainly wouldn't have guessed this was run by charity if I didn't know. I recommend giving this place a go next time you are in this part of town. read more

I'd read about this place, and we ate a late lunch there five days ago with a friend. It's not real large, although we had no problem finding an empty table - and there are also a few tables outdoors (in front of the entrance). It was crowded and rather noisy, but no matter. Also, there's a small garden in the back - with large windows looking out onto it - and we sat by the windows. The food is all vegetarian & vegan and everything looked good. My husband & I had the stuffed peppers and our friend had the curry, for a total of 22.95 pounds. Our friend said her meal was much too bland, but ours was delicious. The portions were quite sufficient. I'd read that some of the people working there are volunteers, as this place supports a charity. They all seemed pleasant. read more

Tea is served in a mug, not a pot with a cup but you do get to choose from a variety of lesbian teas which are all wonderful. They also have a selection of cakes and if you have space for them, their hand cuts chippy chips are so tasty. Poet's Corner happens every 2nd Tuesday of every month at Gallery cafe. You don't have to read just poetry, it could be a short story, a monologue, anything as long it written word, Musicians are welcomed as well, Its starts at 6;30pm till 8pm and you are made to feel very welcome. The host's gets everyone to introduce themselves, at first I was like "oh know'' but it was alright because it was small audience and cosy, They pick the acts name's out of the hat and each act performs their piece, I describe the talent as inspiring,ingenious,deep.creative,thought provoking, engaging and fun. Even when it was finished I spoke to a few of the acts and they were friendly and even suggested if you got something you have written come share, I might do that, no I'll defiantly do that. I had a homemade banana muffin that i really liked, I forgot what homemade tastes like considering I'm always buying processed ones, this had less sugar in it yum yum. The Gallery Cafe is a charity run cafe that serves up incredibly tasty and mighty portions of vegetarian and vegan food. It is fast becoming a popular music venue and runs some very interesting groups and clubs for the local community. There have some incredibly talented musicians play with FREE Live music happening every Wednesday and Friday. There are various other things happening at the cafe like a knitting club where you can learn to knit or teach others what you know and the poets corner with recitals of rehearsed or original poems. The cafe is an excellent place to go during the day if you want somewhere quiet to do some work with free WIFI and the selection of teas, coffees and fruit juices is not to be sniffed at. The staff are warm and friendly and the price of the food and drink is very reasonable and being a charity run cafe you know that your contributing to the 30 or so charities that are housed within St. Margaret's settlement. If your ever stuck for what to do on a Friday night, i Highly recommend that you check out the Free Fridays at the cafe where you can see some of the finest talent on London's Acoustic and electronic music scene. There is a nice selection of bottled beers and ales, and wines and if you like you can also have a game of scrabble or dominoes. There is so much going on at this humble cafe that i fear i could ramble on for some time. The Gallery cafe also takes part in Time Out's First Thursdays, when it opens its doors late for a chance to see amazing art, culture and events after hours. Every month you can see a new art installation from local artists. They are very on the ball with the promotion of the events that take place and you can find literature in the cafe on everything that is happening there! Don't get too excited by the name, which only really amounts to a few pictures on the walls by local artists - they change quite often and vary greatly in both subject matter and standard. Everything served here is vegetarian and many things are vegan, so don't get your carnivorous hopes up should you order the sausage and mash (which is actually pretty good, considering I love the more pig-based variety). Meal portions are generous, and a special mention is necessary for the jacket potato i was recently given - as it was roughly the size of a small badger. Coffee is good if a little small, but ethical and averagely priced, and there is an impressive selection of organic teas and fruityness. They also do a nice range of cakes, which are very tasty but a bit expensive at £2.50 - I'd strongly recommend the walnut brownies which are a bit cheaper, but avoid the vegan ones unless you know what you're doing! The free wi-fi can be a bit patchy, but it's a good place to sit and work anyway - with a nice conservatory part at the back providing plenty of light during the day, or the really comfy sofas at the front where I've been known to fall asleep. Dirty and expensive. This cafe is very local to me so it's a shame it's made me ill on two occasions. The kitchens are notoriously grimey and I've received blank stares when I've politely suggested the volunteers clean the dirt from their fingernails. The unpaid volunteers are, not surprisingly, lacklustre on customer service, speed and manners. A vegan burger here generally means paying over £6 for a big mushroom in bread. I was here for an acoustic/live music night raising money for a really good LGBTQ counselling charity last week. It's a great little venue for this sort of thing, cosy and in the hippy area of Bethnal Green. There is patio area out the front, big wooden tables and parasols as standard. Moving inside the tables were set out almost as a gallery in long lines, which was perfect for the sort of event going on. Overall it was a really relaxed and understated atmosphere. Busy, very busy without feeling claustrophobic. I'd ventured in for a pre-show tipple, but was greeted by a wonderful waft coming from the kitchen behind the counter. There were rustic and colourful slices of pizza out on display. Too tempting. So I enquire about a suitable bottled beer (no draft alas, but I aint in no pub) and get a knowledgeable response from the friendly hipster guy at the till. They also sell those natural lemonades you can get in Ikea! So I can't say much for the meals but I had my hearty vegan slice and a cold Witchcraft and sat outside content. There's also a big garden/grassy area out the back with plenty of bunting. All together an unpretentious, friendly, could be slightly cheaper (but couldn't everything) and yummy place to wile away a lazy summers eve. read more

Yummy! I had the pea soup and chips for a quick bite after a long afternoon of shopping at the Vintage Faire event. The chips were (American accent here) AWESOME. The soup was really good as well. All the other food I saw being served looked scrumptious and the prices were better still! The service was pretty slow, but maybe that's just because there was a big lunchtime rush for all the shoppers. But I think they could have had one more person at the counter (the poor girl had to take orders, take cash AND make the drinks). I've been meaning to go here for awhile and I was not disappointed! There was a steady queue the entire time we were there, but there were free places evenly popping up around the small cafe, so people could always find a seat inside or outside (I think there might even be an upstairs? Not sure.) It has a really nice relaxed ambiance, despite it being so busy. A vegan fry-up wooshed passed under my nose when I walked in and I was set to have that until I saw the vegan burger. Glad I changed my mind! The burger was a handmade veggie-style burger (versus the meaty-style ones) on cibatta bread filled with vegan mayo and optional vegan cheese. Despite the devil's fruit in the sandwich and salad (cucumber), it was delicious and the salad was actually really good with what seemed to be a pesto/oil dressing. Oh, and I had a plain black Americano that was outstanding. You forget what good coffee tastes like until something like this jolts you back to your senses. An absolutely lovely cafe. Called the Gallery and tucked away on a side street behind 2 dark parasols next to York Hall, this little gem is a haven of chatter and light in Bethnal Green! On this busy Sunday, they ran out of mugs, were low on pastries, and had no more teapots to give me a large quantity of tea with. So I had just one mug. I happily would have stayed for much much longer because of this little secret: you see, in the back of the cafe, there is a greenhouse-like construct! The back corner has 2 walls and the ceiling made entirely out of glass, thus bringing in abundant quantities of that rare commodity in London we in the Med know as sunlight! So, of course, having retrieved my well-fought-for mug of tea, I sat down like a kitten in the windowed area next to a hot radiator, and started to purr. I'd happily go back anytime. Service on a Sunday morning was painfully slow, staff were not very friendly. No tags out to say what sandwiches were what and a 20 minute wait to buy a sandwich and pastry. This vegetarian/vegan cafe gets a lot of love, but the times I have been have been a bit hit-and-miss. The service is OK, but a little slow (certainly in clearing the tables). The food itself, just wasn't that good. Vegan pizza I had was not really very tasty at all. There was something not quite right with base - perhaps I have been spoilt proper Italian pizza, but still - and the toppings themselves were nothing special (the vegan cheese was actually a bit gross). Overall the prices were too expensive. I'll try this again in the hope that it's improved, but I won't be rushing back for a few months. read more
