For a chess player (as I am), this is the coolest shop.  The friendly and laid back owners are the…read morehusband and wife team of Tom and Marguerite Paravola.  There aren't a lot of brick and mortar chess shops like this in the entire country and they have been at it here in Elmhurst for 20+ years.  It was a total blast to look, feel, and touch the various chess pieces and sets.  I ended up buying a magnetic wooden chess set and it was worth it to me to see and touch what I was buying.  Yes, you can buy sets via online shopping, but like clothes, I want to know what I'm really getting.  Yes, there is a modest premium for that but well worth it given the multitude of available choices.  Besides, while browsing, you get to chat it up with Tom who is a chess lover, and that's worth something too!  While browsing, I particularly liked the look and feel of some heavy metal pieces made in Italy, and I've never touched pieces that sturdy and heavy, and maybe one day I'll splurge the $400 for such a set of chess pieces.  They have limited hours as Tom actually still works another job!  Yet, he still has time to also run a free weekly Tuesday night casual chess meetup night in the neighborhood and all are welcome.  Keep it up, best wishes, and thank you!

They also have Magic, The Gathering and other popular card games, though I didn't see Pokemon among the display cases. The gaming side is top of the line, with plenty of tables and terrain for hours of battle. I fancy myself more of a painter than a gamer and I was impressed with the options for paint, brushes, and tools they had available. I didn't buy anything on my first visit, but my son and friends felt welcomed and were treated kindly, even as teenagers (typically, this has been a challenge). I'm looking to paint an army of space marines soon, so I'll be in to grab some washes and metallics. This place is nerd nirvana.

We were warmly greeted by co-owner Steve who told us all about the place and joked a lot. They have a big focus on card games (Magic, Pokemon etc.) but have assorted tabletop games that you can try out and then order if you are interested (less overhead = lower cost). There were a handful of patrons playing in there when we arrived (a lot of the store space is dedicated to tables for this), so they clearly have a following! Steve said that their groups are laid-back and they frown on "shark" type players, so I'd think this would be a good place for the entry-level player. Definitely worth checking out for your gaming needs!

I appreciate that the rules for the space are clearly posted on the wall behind the register, so the expectation for everyone is established (I would imagine it makes it easier for staff to enforce as well, because they can just refer to the sign). The clerk was very friendly and gave me some info about a game I was interested in (a collaborative version of "The Fox in the Forest"; my fiance and I love the original version), which I ended up purchasing! Every time I've ever stopped in, I've been treated kindly & with respect by the staff working there - which is *not* a given when you're a solo guy with tattoos shopping alone, trust & believe that. A really helpful & nice gentleman named Jackson showed me the "buy 1, get one 1 free" deal they were running for some of their paints. He made the process of shopping for/choosing different colors or different formulas really easy, & honored the deal fairly! He was helpful & cool. Anyone who is into wargaming, table top miniatures etc KNOWS that any kind of buy 1, get 1 deal on high end paints like Citadel, Vallejo or Army Painter is an insanely good value. Also, there has always been some kind of community gaming event happening whenever I've stopped in; which tells me it's *clearly* an important hub for the TCG/TWG community. The store offers painting and game tutorials for beginners of all ages, and if you're looking to get your feet wet - it's really the way to go. Good sportsmanship flourishes here, and everyone here is friendly. Cannot recommend it enough if you're looking for friendly people or interested in the hobby.

My friend found Bob's burgers Monopoly and was considering buying it when they found some dungeons & dragons products that they wanted more. It was a tough decision but Bob's will be the next visit there. I was impressed with the varied collection of games and products that they had. In the end I only made a small purchase, a pack of Magic the Gathering Universes Beyond / The Lord of the Rings Tales of Middle Earth booster cards. I don't play the game but I do enjoy the artwork. This is totally the store that would be a danger for me if I lived up here. I would probably be in shopping once a week. A very worthwhile visit.

Try getting someone to answer the phone or return an email. Forget it. Try to figure out their website search. Doesn't work. Try to get them to take a pre-order for you. Forget it again. And if you stop in the store in person and they don't know you personally, they treat you like a potential shoplifter or an idiot that knows nothing. Or they just ignore you and refuse to help you or answer questions. It seems you have to be a part of their club. But they WILL take your money. I'm done with Lombard, there are a lot of other places to shop that have the same prices and are a lot more friendly.
