I arranged for The Garage Door Company to replace the springs in our garage door. A young man showed up. He removed the two long springs and replaced them with four shorter springs that appeared to have been used (see photo). The young man was clearly over his head as it took him the better part of two hours to complete the work; he spent an inordinate amount of time on the phone getting assistance. In the process he damaged the rail, bending it with pliers so the door would travel the entire distance; however it was very noisy. Garage Door Bill ~$950.00. I immediately called Action Doors, Calgary to repair the damage. The service technician from Action appeared within an hour. He removed the four springs and replaced with two new springs designed for the Action Door. The garage door was now functioning smoothly. Bill: $372.00. I tracked down one of the owners of the company about my concerns. He was very argumentative and threatening. read more

Worst experience from management. Door and operator installation are approx 6 mos. Wiring to wall button was VERY POORLY DONE leaving exposed low voltage wires resulting in the failure of the wall button station. The repair was unnecessary if the original installer had done a proper job. The tech who repaired the sloppy workmanship from installation completed it in less than 15 min. Please DO NOT allow this company near your home. I asked this company to come QUOTE me on a repair and/or door replacement. Without any consent or authorization from me they did a shoddy repair and sent me a bill for $800! Naturally I did not pay, I attempted to resolve this amicably, one option was for them to come remove the repairs I never authorized. Mark's reply was to me was "I'm taking you to court, I'm going to put a lien on your house". Very aggressive and predatory. The most unbelievable part was him then claiming that because I didn't answer his texts while he was at my house it gave him, and I quote "implicit consent" to do any work he wanted on my garage door. I attempted to explain, as I would to a 5 year old, you can't take a car to a shop with engine problems, and when the car shop calls you with the problems, and you don't answer, that does NOT give them consent to fix your car how they want and bill you wherever they want? Needless to say I have called the Alberta Consumer Investigations Unit and an investigation has been initiated against this company. Terrible experience with this company due to our gullibility, age and trusting natures. Our garage door was behaving erratically and we had the two dollar promotion card. Mark came by two days later and told us our garage door opener needed replacing. He said he could do the replacement immediately plus the cable and rollers. We had no idea what a normal price would be so we foolishly agreed to having the work done for $1900. He assessed us as elderly and gullible. We do choose to think people are honest and trustworthy. NEVER NEVER NEVER use this outfit for anything! I am an 80 year old senior who fell victim to this outfit and hopefully by posting this review I can save others from being scammed by them. Here's what happened to me: Last summer (June 2024) I had a new garage door opener installed. Shortly after this my door started stopping and reversing as though something was in the way of it closing. I checked numerous times and nothing was ever blocking it from closing. And to make matters worse, the problem was intermittent, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. After several months of putting up with this I called Mark Weibe at The Garage Door Company and he agreed to come look at it next time he was in my area. Two days later he came to my home and I explained the situation and he immediately said my rollers needed replaced as they were "seized up" and causing the door to reverse. He said my cables also needed replaced as they were rusted and would likely break any day now. I asked for an estimate and he told me $721.53 (after a supposed 15% Senior's discount). I hesitated at first but then gave in as I was totally frustrated with this door refusing to close properly. It took his helper about 30 minutes to complete the work and I was amazed how quickly he was done. I then received his itemized invoice and decided to look up the items on it on Amazon to compare his prices and was totally flabbergasted at what I found! There was a $189.00 labour fee (pretty pricey for 30 mins of work). He replaced my rollers and installed 8 - 2" short steel rollers at $29.99 each for a total of $239.92. Amazon's price is $31.53 for a pack of TEN ( $3.15 each). He also installed 4- 2" long steel rollers at $39.99 each for a total of $159.96. Amazon's price is $10.26 each. Then came the replacement cables. He charged me for 18 ft of 1/8" wire rope at $9.99 per foot for a total of $179.82. Amazon's price for 2 - preformed cables 9'6" long is $15.79 for the 2 cables. On top of the labour and material prices, he added on another $33.00 for a Travel charge (although he told me he would stop by whenever he was "in your neighbourhood"). After a day went by, my door stopped working properly again. I phoned him and he said he would come in the next day or two but then it worked next time I tried it so I was good enough to call him and cancel his trip. A day later it acted up again so I texted him and he said he would come on Friday or Monday. It's now late on Tuesday and I haven't seen or heard from him, nor do I expect to. A couple days ago, I went to the garage after reading something on Amazon about installing the safety sensors. They are to be installed no more than 6" from the floor......mine were about 20". I lowered the sensors to the correct 6" position and since then my door has not mal-functioned once. Maybe a real door technician should have noticed this instead of gouging me the way he did. So, I guess I'll just mark this down as another senior moment where I should have done my due diligence before agreeing to his ridiculous charges. Hopefully others will read this and RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN from this guy. His charges are astronomical and I would NEVER EVER deal with him again. read more

Just got scammed by this company! AVOID AT ALL COST! Charged a ridiculous price of over $1000 for 30 mins of work and the problem is still not fixed. Charged for a couple of drums and springs, ridiculous travel fee and expensive general labour. Came back for a second time and STILL didn't fix the issue. He was trying to give me an excuse that it's a different problem than when he came the first time. When really, he created the second problem and will deny it of course. Lies and tries to make himself sound innocent and tells me there's a new problem and that it wasn't like when he was there the first time, therefore it's not under warranty. We got the Garage Door company in to look at our door (for the Toonie Tune-up) and they quoted over $700 to do repairs. I called some other garage door companies and their quote was under $500. When this new guy showed up, he said we didn't need any repairs and that our door was perfectly balanced and running fine. Think twice about the Toonie Tune-up that some unsuspecting homeowners might fall for services that are not even required, at very high prices. read more

The garage door frame now gets damaged every time we open the door. DO NOT use this company. The owner Mark Wiebe is rude and condescending, his prices are ridiculously high and adds in undisclosed costs such as travel time when billing. I booked for of a special he was offering, $2 labour for a garage door service, excluding parts. First thing he says when I opened the garage door to let him in was "you need new rollers, and the springs could break at any time so need to be replaced and that the garage door opener is too old and needs to be replaced". I asked him to change just the rollers, his son changed the rollers on the door at a cost of $22 each (at Canadian Tire they are $11.99 for a pack of two) he offered to replace the garage door opener at a cost of $799 plus $399 labour for a total of $1198.00 plus tax. I said that was too much and declined. I have since bought a top-of-the-line Chamberlain belt driven garage door opener and arranged for another company to professionally install it all for under $500. Another thing to beware of is that he operates under two different company names, "Homestead Garage Doors" and "the Garage Door Company" that I know of. However after doing some research, I came across an article published by Global News which states "After searching corporate registries, Global News found 13 different garage and overhead door companies in his name. Do not use this company. Our door was stuck in one spot, wouldn't move past it. Mark came out, and for a cost of $700 replaced springs and bushings on a 9 year old system. It worked for one day and same issue recurred. To his credit he came back the next day and adjusted bolts and bent the track and it works again, which truly begs the question, if all the repairs were required in the first place if it only required a few screws on bolts and adjustment of tracks. He is BBB accredited, but read the reviews. It would appear that this is standard procedure with this company, which also goes by Heartland. He only has one star on BBB reviews. You will be told that parts need to be replaced, but, having owned several homes, 9 year old garage doors don't tend to require multiple parts to be replaced. read more

This guy DOES NOT run an HONOURABLE BUSINESS. On Saturday November 27th, 2021 we called him out for a garage door repair. He told us our door opener was not rated for the weight of our door, so we bought what we thought was a new garage door opener. We also replaced another garage door opener, giving him a total of $2200.00 of business. We paid cash. After 1 hour one of the openers would not work. We called him and asked hm to come back. He told us it would be 4-5 days. I told him my door wouldn't open. I fixed the problem on my own. A few days later the other garage door would not close properly -- leaving a gap at the bottom. We called him. He told us 4-5 days. He clearly did not care about his service or our issue. We hired another guy to come out to fix the door. On December 15th, 2021 the door would not close at all. It was -16 and the door was completely open. We called him and he said he is busy and hung up on the phone on my wife. We tried calling him back 12x but he would not take the call. This guy WILL NOT HONOUR HIS WORK. Also, look down on his reviews and look at his responses to other unhappy customers. At least one of them shows that he is not at all an honourable person. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN OR THIS COMPANY. This guy is a bad person and appears to be a complete scam artist. This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. I had them come as an emergency on a Saturday to fix my garage door that wouldn't open. $899.21 later, they had my money and left. I went out Sunday morning and the door wouldn't work. When I called Mark Wiebe, the owner, he wouldn't come fix the door until Monday...because that is when they have the time to do warranty work...what a crock of bull. The "torsion bar package" they installed was never done correctly in the first place. This was not a warranty issue, it was an install issue. Here's the breakdown: Torsion Conversion Kit $395.00, Installation $125.00 Travel Charge $40.50 GST $39.24. The "repairman", Mark Wiebe, was unfriendly, slovenly and unprofessional but he got the job done and I was able to get on with my day. Fast forward 4 years and BOOM, it's gone again! I called this company back because I was pretty sure there would be some sort of guarantee on their previous work. Again, my vehicle was trapped in the garage and I was foolish enough to make assumptions about the reputation of this company! LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES!!!!! I borrowed my mother's car and she came over to wait for him. He came out and told my mother that it was the spring and that they only lasted about 4 years and NO it was not under warranty. Again, I paid close to $600.00. The spring he installed was rusty and looked to be about 100 years old but it worked and what do I know about springs?! This time he left the broken spring laying in the middle of my garage floor along with the rest of his mess! I called him to pick up his garbage but never heard back from him and had to dispose of it myself. Well, here we are, 2014 and guess what? Yep, it's gone again!!!! I just got a quote from THE GARAGE DOOR DEPOT of Calgary. The quote includes adding a strut to support the top section, an opener bracket along with replacing the torsion spring and it will be $369.00. This estimate is considered a FIRM cost, stateing there will be NO SURPRISES! Notice there are no travel costs included on this estimate! So, BEWARE!!!! EDIT: After almost 2 years of using the Marantec opener, I'm having another company install a new different brand Garage opener. I would rather go that route then give this company any more money. I spoke with a knowledgeable repairman and he said Marantec have issues and parts are difficult to order. They're very expensive and more trouble then they're worth. Please keep searching when looking for someone to service your garage door. The first time I made an appointment the person on the phone said that I had an appointment "Tomorrow". Waited the next day and called when no one showed and they said that the appointment was for the following day. This exact situation happened again when I called for service when the garage door opener wasn't closing when I tried only 8 months after they installed. When I explained this, the person on the phone didn't seem to care or apologize. They not only take advantage when people are stuck between a rock or a hard place when needing help with their garage openers but customer service isn't high in their priority list either. read more

SERIOUSLY AVOID THIS COMPANY! I'm not the type to write reviews, but felt this experience was so bad that it was important to warn others. We had issues with our garage door opening smoothly, so we wanted to get help prior to winter. So, we booked "The Garage Door Company" to come to our house to assess the situation. They were over 2 hours late, with no explanation. "Mark" immediately told us that we needed new springs and wheels and that would cost $1000. Reluctantly we agreed as we don't want to deal with this issue in the winter. Once Mark very quickly completed the work, he said they "guarantee their work for 5 years" and left. Surprise, surprise, we still have the same issue/concern with our door. We have made several attempts (8-10) to contact Mark via phone and email and he will not call us back (even though their voicemail says they will "call you back in 1-2 minutes"). Finally, we got hold of "Kevin" and explained the situation and were concerned about the lack of communication and the fact that it seems like they don't keep their promise as they haven't returned 1 email or 1 phone call and Kevin actually hung up on us! So, they got our $1000 and have zero warranty or customer service. Big mistake dealing with these guys. If I could rate them a 0 I would and absolutely recommend anybody with garage door issues to absolutely avoid this company as there are far better companies in Calgary that also include customer service. Had a spring break in my garage door. Needing to get my car out of the garage right away so I called The Garage Door Company (also known as Homestead Garage Doors) to replace the spring. Mark Wiebe replaced the springs. The door broke down a week later with my car stuck in the garage again but Mark Wiebe couldn't come out right away to fix it. Called another company to fix the door and found out that the wrong springs were installed on my door and it wasn't set up properly resulting in the new issue. Oh and to add insult to injury, I was told that Wiebe had charged me about $300 over the going rate. Tried to get Wiebe to put the proper springs on my door, but no luck. Furthermore, the job has now been completed to my satisfaction and invoiced as per quote: Who puts this on an invoice unless they are going to rip you off. Do not Do business with this company, they asses the buyer and if they see any weakness will charge you an insane rate for the parts. They charged me over 600% mark up on the springs that they installed in 15 minutes. Also charging me for travel time on top of the hour rate. I committed to the repair nonetheless and within a couple days the door started acting up again and there was NO interest in coming back to warranty their work. The Garage Door Company is owned by a crook. Mark Wiebe came to fix my door that would not go down. Mark charged me $418.85 for new bearings. It took him 20 minutes and he charged me for an hour. That is fine with me if the work I needed done was successful. We tested it after the repair was done and it was fine at first. I went to use it 24 hours later and it would not go down again. I called Mark to tell him about my issue. He told me I would have to schedule another appointment to fix the sensor. He charged me $418.85 the first time and clearly the job wasn't done. I said I would do the sensor but he needed to waive the service charge because he still hadn't completed the work I needed done in the first place. And the fact that I was already charged for an hour on 20 minutes of work. So the way I see it I should still have time on the clock to get my original problem fixed. He told me I would have to find another company and hung up. Mark will not answer his calls or return my messages. He told me I would get an electronic reciept. Still hasn't sent it. I was told the bearings put in were under a two year warrany. He will not honor this as well. Please do your research on this company and you will find that Mark Wiebe has been ripping customers off for years. I learned my lesson the hard way...you don't have to. Usually use another co but the best they could do for a broken spring on an emergency basis was 3 days...with Mark we were able to get an apptmt in 2 hours. He arrived as promised with an advance phone call to let us know he was on the way, and work was done very efficiently, took around an hour and when finished everything was cleaned up. My Garage door broke first thing in the morning. It was aweful; stuck 1/2 way open. I called Mark, as I had used him once before and the service was great. He said he could be there in a couple of hours. He showed up just under 2 hours later and within an hour of work had the door fixed. He upgraded the parts and now it runs smooth. Great job!
