Duxbury Gardeners is the construction equivalent of a puppy mill. Good looking at first blush, but full of terminal problems. The list of failures would cause a doctor to lose their license, but fortunately for Duxbury Gardeners there is no meaningful licensure in Massachusetts. Less than a year in, the stonework separated from spa, a retaining wall failed, 10 plantings died and that was AFTER the construction woes of COLLAPSING the pool company's plumbing, cutting marked underground cables, the fire pit had to be replaced (twice - "it was a known defect", why put in something that is known to be defective???) and most notably running over the septic system line despite having been informed on location (and obviously having plans) - even after being told "you know - that's not a good idea" they asked my wife anticipating that somehow women aren't intelligent. Jason is a nice guy and good crayon drawer but this company is a pure nightmare. Hard to admit making a mistake that cost this amount of money, but hopefully it saves someone else some a bigger headache. This company will leave you with a lot more to clean up than just the cigarette butts they toss on your lawn. read more

We are very happy with The Gardeners!! Matt did an amazing job completely landscaping our new home. We were very concerned about the conditions of our environment. We live on the marsh and are constantly exposed to high winds and salt. We wanted something that would look nice, be low maintenance and could withstand the elements. Matt gave us fantastic ideas! After several false starts with companies that did not follow through, we found The Gardeners. Their reviews on Yelp were and are consistently complimentary. Matt had wonderful ideas and spiffed up our parking area, and front formerly wooded area. Many trees had been removed to enable us to have effective solar panels, and the grass and mulched areas were eyesores. His crew also weeded our back patio, hill, added more stone to a side area, and mulched around the whole house. I was not expecting this. Having been away when the final work was completed, I was blown away coming home to a newly landscaped acre and more. Additionally the price was more than fair, and everyone whom I met who worked on the project was friendly and invested in their work. We hope to use them often. read more

I hired The Gardeners initially a couple of years ago to do some basic fall/spring cleanup and general yard maintenance, but I've always had bigger landscaping projects I've wanted done. I just put them off for various reasons, until this year. I asked Matt to re-do my front walkway. It was a messy hodge-podge of loose flagstones, with a slight downhill slope as you walk from the driveway to my front door - hard to keep nice, and a major slip hazard in the winter. It's now a beautiful paver walkway with steps. Upkeep is so much easier, and will be year round. And I get so many compliments on it! Matt's team did a great job, it looks fantastic. Based on a recommendation from a professional builder who used them in the past, I recently hired Duxbury Gardeners to build entry steps, a retaining wall, a walkway and a new driveway. I could not be happier with the results. From Day 1, Matt and Jay were always available to answer my questions and they made recommendations along the way based on their experience with other such projects. The crew were meticulous and courteous and were always willing to work with us on tweaks to the design. They really paid attention to the little details that truly make a project like this stick out. The end result is a perfectly integrated landscape that no doubt has increased the value of our home. If it wasnt for the final product looking as great as it does after all that occurred, we would have given Duxbury 1 star. They installed a 2000sqft patio, coping around our pool, a retaining wall around our yard, and a 10ft fire pit plus 2 fire bowls as well. A large job for any contractor. Not sure if the pandemic had impacted the quality of their employees working but we had several mishaps throughout the life of the project including extensive damage (~$15k loss) to our (finished) basement due to the pitch of the patio they installed ended up flooding our basement. There is no excuse for a company of this caliber to miss the importance of proper pitch and drainage around a property. It took 3 months for them to fully fix the problem which ended up with us agreeing to deduct the amount it would take to fix the basement from our final invoice and hire a separate company to address it. The project also took 4 months longer than originally estimated since only 1 or 2 guys would show up (and hours were sporadic, usually 9-1pm with an hour for lunch - and no work on Fridays - some days they wouldnt even show up and there was no call or reason as to why), communication is terrible (they do not respond to emails or phone calls unless you pester them constantly), they overbilled us on 3 separate occasions (we kept records of all estimates and invoices and a good thing we did), they invoiced us separately for work we assumed was covered under other proposals (e.g., we received an invoice for patio stairs work 1 month after patio work was completed and was told this was not part of estimate), and they would do work without discussing or estimating cost of work. In some cases, the work did need to get done (like extending the retaining wall or patio to accommodate bad measurements from original proposal, but they would just bill you for it and expect you to pay without being consulted). We failed electrical inspection twice. They also planted 40 trees during the hottest part of July without hooking up the irrigation system first - as such, all 40 trees died within 3 days and needed replacement (done in early November). Again, another example of a professional company missing something so simple. When the irrigation system was finally installed, it flooded parts of our front yard and needed to be fixed again. The team also backed over and destroyed our mailbox (Walpole Woodworkers) and replaced it with some flimsy $20 one and would not respond to our claim to replace. If we had to say something positive about Duxbury, the final product (when all these mishaps were finally fixed), looks amazing - a true oasis right in our backyard. I would also say Jay (owner), is a man of his word and did his best to address our concerns. If I had to do it all over again, I would ask for guarantees in writing about scheduling, number of workers assigned to your project, expected hours per day, and estimate of completion. Also ask for itemized estimates to avoid unexpected "add-ons". When project started to go south, I was no longer a priority and had to fight to get them to fix it. read more

This may well be the most important thing you'll read when considering a landscape Company!!!! Like you, my wife and i asked our friends for recommendations. We also called 3 other companies on our own. After getting all the estimates and talking about our needs the choice was clear....not even close. The Gardeners earned our business. What's even more important is, we were even happier with our decision after the install!!! Competent, credible and understanding your needs is what running a successful business is all about. As former General Manager for the largest publisher of the Yellow Pages i got to know alot about local business. I was extremely dissatisfied with how my landscaping project was handled. Honestly would talk to them about it but I feel pretty awkward about how poorly my job was treated and executed, and don't think they would even care if I said I was unhappy. I don't yelp, ever, but this was so exceptional I really felt like I wanted to save someone else the trouble and waste of $$ I went through. Really spotty communication throughout the process, they told me 'mother nature will take care of the grass' when I asked about watering my new grass. I watered anyway because I knew I should, but probably still not enough, and then later on followed by text saying, I drove by your house and you should water more! It was totally unprofessional and I was frustrated that they didn't help me know how or when I should water. My new 'grass' is 80% weeds because that is what thrived in those conditions. The driveway they put in has almost zero relationship to the walkway - they don't make sense together, and the installers for both never spoke to one another or knew what the plan was. The final blow is that the whole driveway became covered in grass throughout the summer (it came up through the driveway they created), looking messy and worse than it did before. I regret using them and think they paid almost no attention to my job because it wasn't as big as some of the others. I think the pictures speak more than my words - it looks terrible and I will have to pay someone to come fix it next year. read more

My husband and I hired The Gardeners for the install of our front lawn and then again for the planting of several Arborvitae trees to serve as a privacy screen. We couldn't be happier with their service. Matt is very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions or concerns we had. He kept us up to date with everything concerning our projects.
