The Garlic Farm is a classic Isle of Wight experience (albeit I don't think much garlic is actually grown on the farm or even the island) which is consistently enjoyable. A couple of times I've even got to watch red squirrels eat while I dined. The chowder is really good - huge mussels and I recommend the smoked garlic bulb to start it's a real mix of flavours. Chicken caesar salad also goes down well. My son ate his whole meal (garlic sausage and wedges with baked beans) with real enjoyment. The bloody mary with black garlic vodka is sweeter than my preference but they brought out the vampire slayer hot sauve which balanced thar out and gave a massive kick! Some horseradish would make it even better. Children will enjoy the play equipment and fancy chickens and it's also fun to try all the samples in the farm shop. I can still smell the garlic. And guess what - its not a bad thing ;) So we biked up a long road to get there - uphill on a very sunny day and in the back of mind amidst the sweat I thought - this had better be worth it. And I have to say - it was! You are introduced to a variety of garlic spiced flavours, garlic horseradish, garlic mustard, garlic mayo, garlic pickles - you get the idea! They grow some of the most intriguing garlic you will ever see, white , brown and even black. We tried the famous black garlic ice cream and it wasn't bad ! There was also a young gent selling garlic flavoured corn on the cob which was equally if not more delicious. You can pick up some great gifts here and most friends am sure would love garlic seasoned jars or sauces :) they can last a while and quite inexpensive. How this farm has not been visited by Environmental health I don't know. The taste testing of the garlic pots is the most unhygienic and germ spreading I have ever come across. Stirring sticks are on the side to taste different dishes of garlic. Although it says "no double dipping" every person I saw put the same stick in every pot after tasting it!!!!!!! So, the saliva from every different person was transferred from pot to pot. Then a child sneezes over 3 or 4 pots with no hand or hanky over mouth. I have never come across anything so disgusting. Even after I pointed out to a man what he was doing he still carried on. This needs stopping or controlling by staff. If I coukd give this a zero score I would read more

You must hit up The Garlic Farm if you happen to be on the Isle of Wight and in search of one-stop-shopping for all things garlic. The fact that it is family-run is also a bonus. This is a nice spot to visit with a group, especially the cafe portion, which offers daily specials in addition to the standard menu selections, all of which feature garlic in various incarnations. I had the baked mac and cheese dish, which was excellent (and not at all overwhelmingly garlicky). We also shared a bottle of rose wine and a dessert. During the meal, there were several sightings of red squirrels enjoying their repast of hazelnuts. Even though we dined inside, we were fortunate enough to get a window seat, having come after the lunch rush, almost at the cusp of tea-time. After our meal we stopped by the garlic farm store. The range of garlic products was comprehensive, even including garlic ice cream--chocolate and pear flavors. Word to the wise: bypass the garlic ice cream and opt for the millionaire shortbread (short on garlic, but long on chocolate) instead. We even ended up buying some hazelnuts, just to see if the red squirrels who were enjoying them knew something we didn't. It took some work to crack them (must be how the squirrels stay so skinny). Loooooovely! If you are a fan of garlicky flavours you should definitely, definitely pop into this farm when you visit the Isle of White. My friends had been here before, so told me that they served yummy food in their café...but I wasn't expecting such good quality food at such reasonable prices. I had the gnocchi, which was covered in cream and simply delicious. Quite a few of my friends shared meze platters which also looked amaaazing. These included garlic cooked in all different ways, (roasted, pickled, garlic dips etc.) along with garlic bread (of course) and cold meats. At the moment they are also serving winter pimms which was delicious and warming on such a cold day! In addition to the lovely café, there is a shop selling all possible garlic- related goods! You could buy oak-smoked garlic, black garlic, elephant garlic...as well as an amazing range of garlic chutneys (fig, pear and garlic chutney anyone?), garlic butter, garlic beer(!),** garlic ice-cream, garlic chocolate and they even had planting kits so you can grow your own garlic. * I have no idea how the previous reviewer, Kevin, had such a different experience to me! I've never been to this island before and this place is the spot to go! The variety is extensive and the sampling is such a unique feature before buying. The environment is beautiful, homey and inviting. The food at the restaurant is top notch. I had the Mediterranean flatbread and it was delicious. The entire experience here was incredible. If you like garlic, then the Garlic Farm is the place to visit. It is not far from Newport in the centre of the island and it is fairly well sign posted from the main roads. It is very much a working farm with chickens roaming around the cafe area, you can even walk over to the crops and see a huge array of garlic. The cafe is worth checking out as they do main meals but we only had a snack as it was late afternoon. In the shop you can buy some of the garlic grown on the farm, the black garlic is particularly tasty. read more

Great spot for garlic lovers, when we have people to stay usually pop in here. There is a restaurant and the garlic shop, that has now shrunk slightly to expand the restaurant. Get all things garlic from dips to ice cream (not kidding). Also get other local delicacies when in season such as asparagus and sweetcorn. Great spot when on a trip round the Island. read more

Nestled away almost hidden along a road in Newchurch Isle of Wight lies the wonderful Garlic Farm. Free to enter and wander around it's amazing to see garlic being grown and to smell all the wonderful aromas. The staff in the shop are bubbly and friendly and there are many wonderful products to buy like garlic soap and some great garlic dips to try for free. Why not visit somewhere a little different from the norm, educate the kids and have some fun and it's all free. read more

Disappointed as this was hyped up in various places on the island and really was more of a farm shop with very expensive cafe (nearly £9 for a sandwich of the day) Also renovation work currently being done (July 2010) so only portaloos and no accessible toilets but new ones are being built. read more

And yes. It is as good as it gets.... Yesterday we were taken to the Garlic Farm by a regular restaurant patron for lunch and an informal chat about WORK, Yes that well known four letter word. We sat outside on the terrace. Were entertained by Red Squirrels and served some very delicious food by the excellent staff. It started to rain. Not a problem ! Did not actually go to The Garlic Farm itself, but the Garlic Festival, which is in a nearby field. Gosport Ferry did a trip across with a coach meeting you a Ryde & taking you to the Festival with ticket included for £34.00. We went on the Sunday, but it is also on the Saturday. If you are looking for something a little different the this place is ideal. The breakfast was excellent and the garlic wasn't overpowering, which I was initially worried about. The waitress was friendly and helpful and we didn't have to wait too long. The location is beautiful, tucked away from main roads and inside we felt warm and comfortable on the gloomy day we visited. Called into the garlic farm on the way back to the ferry after a weekend break in the Isle of Wight, we were not disappointed, after doing the tasting (which had lots to try) we marked our sheet and swiftly went to the shop to find the items we'd marked, I didn't think the items were overly priced, and bought several different products (although would of liked to see smaller sized chocolate bars, as £4.15 for a bar your not sure your going to like i felt was a bit steep) we did the farm walk but was very wet so headed to the cafe instead, for hot chocolate and cake, not overly priced, and very tasty, well worth a visit, would call again! I didn't manage to go round the farm on my visit but the shop was well worth the journey down the country lanes to farm. It stocks every garlic related product you can think of; honey, marmalades pesto, garlic crushers the list is endless. The staff were very friendly and the tea shop stock a nice variety of dishes. read more
