    Abbot's Ale - GENIUS
    Bryan D.

The British have given us many great things, and, of course, Shakespeare in Stratford Upon Avon is but one. Another is Abbot Ale. Enjoy a pint in a building built in the 1400's. Quite the experience!

There's a lot of history within these walls, which I'm sure draws crowds often to The Garrick Inn. While the decor is unique and interring, the food fell short for me. Visiting as a part of a group, we had three options to choose from and being a picky eater, I went with the fried cheese and veggie option. My dish was cold, and not just a little cold. I ate a few bites and most of the veggies and was all set. I understand we were a large group of about 30, but I expected a bit more, especially from such a historic place. Since I paid for a full-day tour, I have no idea how much the restaurant got, but if you are serving food, I would at least expect for soft drinks to be included as well.

Stopped here on our way to London and got a very nice cyder. My fiancé got the "Shakesbeer" which he said was okay, but he's fairly picky with his beers so if you're not too picky, it'll probably be just fine! Very cute interior, everyone working was helpful and knew lots about the place, restrooms in the back, and free WiFi. Glad we stopped!

We went to the Garrick Inn for a late evening dessert, and had the sticky toffee pudding, berry crumble, and hot chocolate. All were quite tasty (eating more than we should!), and it was very enjoyable to do so in such a historical place. It did have a wide array of patrons, from a middle age hen party, to young international tourists, to older men that seemed to come here periodically. It is an older building, so it does have slightly lower ceilings, uneven places, and dimmer light in some areas. It is also slightly pricier than some other places nearby, though I do think it is worth a visit given the history.

Same menu as The Dirty Duck. Worse service. However, the building that houses the pub is stunning. If you love classic Tudor architecture and styling then it's worth at least a visit and a pint. Otherwise, head for the Duck!

Awesome, historic bar in Shakespeare's home town. Can't remember the name of the bartender, but he was a solid, friendly guy. The customers were diverse, quirky and conversational and one particular old flirt sang me a raunchy song about a girl named "Abigail." All in all, one of many unforgettable experiences from my trip to the UK--and it was fun giving into the idea that I may have been having a pint in the same spot the bard once did.

Stop by for a (shakes)beer or some wine and you'll find it fairly easy to grab a seat - we went around 9pm on a Saturday night and there were plenty of cosy areas to settle down in. The place has a good vibe and seemed to attract pub-goers of all ages which is a good sign. The pub is a nice place to visit, and when we were there a bat decided to head on in too! That was quite an event and took several minutes for it to find the exit :)

Don't go for the food. The atmosphere is nice but the food...not so much. So many restaurants with the same menu how can it go so wrong?

Review Highlights - The Garrick Inn

My husband had the steak & ale pie (best we've had anywhere), I had the slow cooked confit of pork belly, and this was just a complete party in my mouth!

What a wonderful stop…read more We were visiting Shakespeare's birthplace, and after enriching our minds we definitely needed a drink. Without hesitation our guide immediately recommended the Old Thatch Tavern. First of all, it is centrally located and easy to find. Once there you're taking by the decor and homely feeling. The staff were amazing. I wasn't drinking hard liquor and they guided me through a variety of Apple ciders that were delightful. They made the entire experience 1000% better. Their advice and knowledge really made the stop one of the best drinking experiences we had in England. Little by little more members of our crew continues showing up and eventually we had a full blown part going. Again, it was a blast! I can't wait to go again, make a stop at the Old Thatch Tavern and relive some of the memories.

It was 10.25 on Wednesday evening, February 25th, but we were turned away by the young barman, as he said he had already called last orders and wasn't letting anybody else in. Now, my husband and I were very disappointed, as everywhere else in the town had been so welcoming and accommodating. We walked across the road and had a few drinks in another bar, as there are plenty of nice places to choose from, BUT, if I was the owner of this establishment, I would not be best pleased at young bar staff turning my customers away. That is a lot of revenue to lose over the year if this is happening every night, especially with the cost of living at its current high and the daily struggle that pubs face to stay profitable!! Maybe a bit of staff re-training wouldn't go amiss and a reminder of who pays the wages!!

The pub is wonderfully located off the beaten track in the Old Town part of Stratford and is a regular haunt for many of the locals. There is a pool table and dart board and on various days of the week hosts a number of local leagues which merely adds to its genuine feel of a good old fashioned English pub. There is a large garden which basks in sunshine throughout most of the day (when the sun shines) and when it rains a large permanent canopy keeps you dry. The kitchen never fails to produce wonderful food and on certain nights of the week offers a special themed menu, sometimes Curry night, sometimes Gourmet Burger night and sometimes fish night. Every other Sunday the pub hosts a quiz night which is good enough to challenge the Little Grey Cells but relaxed enough to be a fun quiz to take part in. And all in aid of the Air Ambulance. The New Bulls Head (formerly the West End) is quite simply the best pub in Stratford.

Feeling a little swanky at it but still, cheaper than most of the traditional pubs surrounding it, a good area to get up and strut your stuff, and close enough the other aspects of "nightlife" in town (not to mention close to bed if you've opted for one of the travel lodges). No.1 felt like the perfect start to an active stratford night. Now i wouldn't normally review a place i had spent such a small amount of time in (without much of a yelp head on for it either - no food, no carefully laid tests for the staff). But one act from the staff compels me: We were walking into town, unsure where would be open, it was really very late. Two intimidating looking bouncers are stood outside No1 (as is their job). We pause across the road, wondering at a country bar that needs bouncers like that, i was about to walk on when they bellowed, "don't worry its nice in here, come on over!" Both with beaming smiles, one walked us in and pointed us to a good spot to sit and the other instructed my friend as to where to smoke (out the front it seemed was less windy that night). I was amazed, to be honest i'm used to bouncers being short tempered and sometimes pretty brash with you (thats just part of city life!). This is the first review i've penned where the security made a place worth visiting for me, well done guys!!
