Review Highlights - The Gateway

Because it is on SAIT campus, the crowd is fairly young but if you're there for the music, who cares?

If you're looking for a fun, fresh take on DJ's for an event you're planning, Cole's Tunes comes…read morehighly recommended by me! I've been to two weddings where Cole's Tunes were the entertainment for the evening and the party did not disappoint. Not only was the company founded by a fellow Calgarian, it is run by a young, lively woman who strives to impress and never lets her customers down. She has a way of choosing just the right music for the mood with an array of different genres to fit any age group. She knows her crowds extremely well and picks music that suits the needs of the event. Even if the crowd aren't necessarily the dancing type, she is sure to put feet on the dance floor and keep the party alive. The prices of all the DJ packages are listed right there on the website so you can easily compare them to other companies. There are many different packages including services both manned and unmanned, light shows, and music for the ceremony, dinner and reception. The costs of the events are not unreasonable since the show is sure to electrify any group of people. They also have a couple of bartenders on hand if you're stuck for work. How handy is that? Cole's Tunes has the perfect mix of professionalism and revelry. This is one company that won't let you down on your special day, whatever the occasion may be!

I'm giving Alpine a 1 star review because at least the food tasted good (even though it wasn't…read morewarm) and the linens were clean. Other than that I do not recommend hiring Rick and his team for your wedding. Our major issue is that an employee named Edith assured us that the catering team would be there an hour prior to dinner service and they were 50 minutes late. I spoke on the phone with her a week before the wedding to give her final numbers and confirm the timeline verbally. They never asked for a written timeline and never initiated any conversations after I sent the deposit. Red flags in retrospect. The catering team arrived at 5:50 even though dinner service was supposed to be at 6. Instead of coming in quietly they yelled at us from their car "WE'RE HERE" while my husband and I were waiting outside the reception hall with our bridal party to make our grand entrance. The caterers then rushed inside and began set up while the bridal party was walking in and guests were clapping. Normally I wouldn't mind but they ended up bumping into our photographer with a cart and ruining the pictures from that moment. The most upsetting part was how rude and disruptive the caterers were as our family was standing up to deliver heartfelt speeches that would only be heard once in a life time. The serving staff began pushing a noisy cart around and slamming down bread baskets and clanging forks on tables during our Maid of Honor's speech. They came up to the head table to ask us questions in the middle of another speech and I was heartbroken. Imagine waiting years for this moment with your family only to be interrupted and distracted by someone who's showed up late and doesn't care about anyone around them. The most humiliating moment was when my new husband had to get up in the middle of a toast to walk the server to the kitchen and ask her team to please wait 5 more minutes until we were done the speeches. I'd like to say dinner service was great after that but that is so far from the truth. We had to stall our guests another 10 minutes because the food still wasn't set up. When it was set up I was told by a few people that it wasn't warm yet because they had just put it in the food warmers and it didn't have time to heat up. The plated dinners that Edith and Rick promised for the head table were no where to be found so bride, groom and our bridal party served ourselves last after everyone else had eaten. I read some other negative reviews about Alpine staff clearing tables and taking full wine glasses away from guests so I had a conversation with Rick about that when we first paid the deposit. He assured me that he would tell the staff to leave the wine glasses and we could return them with the linens after the event. That wasn't communicated to his staff so we had 4 guests upset because their half full dinner plates were taken from them before they could finish. We also had other guests chasing down staff because their full wine glasses were being taken away. Imagine shelling out $45+ per plate of food and it being snatched up leaving your guests hungry and frustrated. It was pretty embarrassing. If you do decide to hire Alpine make sure you get things on paper and over communicate with them. Many of the things that Rick and Edith promised verbally were not followed through with at all. The gold charger plates that were promised never arrived and that left our table settings feeling bare. The cheesecake flavours they promised were wrong too. Now you're probably wondering why we didn't just tell Rick about all this.... Well, we did. We spoke with him face to face and he was very dismissive. Just repeating "I don't know why they were late, they left here at 4" and then becoming unresponsive when we listed the other repercussions of his team's lateness. Plus, the negative treatment we received on our wedding day. He just didn't care to hear it. We were eventually shuffled out of his office so he could deal with another client. Later, after we had called Edith to discuss why things went wrong, Rick emailed us and let us know he would remove the gratuity from our overall bill. Thanks, Rick, but that's pretty small peanuts compared to the lasting impact your company left on our wedding and the passive-aggressive email you sent us after the fact. I caution anyone considering Alpine Catering, if you want an event to go smoothly and you want to avoid disruptions during your most heartfelt moments, hire a different caterer.
