I can't recommend Fred enough. If I could add more stars above I would. Fred dramatically helped my swing in 5 minutes while making it simple for me to repeat. His focus on posture and positioning increased my distance per club by 30-40yds each. He also gave me easy, repeatable tools to improve my chipping and putting. I'm an impatient learner, my wife needs a little TLC. Fred Hanover, somehow knows how to connect with your learning style to get us both improving every lesson. I watched 1,374 (or so it seems) YouTube videos and I still couldn't hit the driver straight, but after my first lesson with Fred, I now get it and got it! Yah more practice is required but I now know how to fix it as the ebb and flow of my skill narrows into solid muscle memory. As for my lovely wife, she went from playing a slicing croquet game to actually hitting golf balls straight and with some distance. She's happy, I'm happy, the folks in the adjoining fairway are happy (Fouuurrr!). Now I'm trying to get my son to take a some lessons. I met Fred Hanover 5 years ago, when, as a 50-something-year-old gal, I wanted to play golf after having moved to Lake San Marcos. I resisted the young hot shots at St Mark's Golf Club...I needed to find someone who would pay attention to someone who was older. Fred fit the bill completely. I found him by asking around from some regulars at the golf club. He had been a college golf team coach. He was SO patient with me and has a very singular teaching style where he can really communicate ways to make small changes that pay big dividends. That's great for a quick fix. On the other hand, my friend and I took lessons for several months and became comfortable with the game. Fred is a natural-born golf teacher. No looking around or wondering what's next. He is TOTALLY INVOLVED. Now flash forward to August of 2020. Fred is a well-accomplished college coach and is currently the coach of the UCSD golf team. I contacted him to give lessons to my 12-year-old nephew, who has been quarantining and was really wanting to get outside and try a new sport. I was blown away with the way that Fred worked with him. My wife got me a Groupon for a one hour lesson with Fred. Who knew an hour could have such a big impact? I'm a hack golfer who has been trying to improve over the last year, playing a lot more, with not much to show in the way of results. Always shooting in the mid-high 120's. About 30 seconds after seeing me swing a golf club Fred had my biggest issues diagnosed. After making some adjustments to my swing, and how I approach mentally hitting the ball, I started driving the ball off the tee much straighter and further, much more consistently. Three days later, I shot a 108 - my best round ever. I'm going to visit Fred again shortly for some lessons on my short game (chipping and putting), but his advice in the one hour I spent with him has already made a huge difference. Obviously practice makes perfect, but now that I know HOW to swing a club properly, it's all on me to continue to improve. read more

I took an hour lesson with Fred and he was horrible. I was having trouble slicing and not hitting my irons solid. All he told me was that I was flippy at impact so I needed to get my hands in front of the clubhead at impact but he did not tell me how do to that by directing the momentum of the club correctly. Once he saw my struggling with holding off the clubface in order to get my hands in front, he quickly gave up on the irons and went to driver. With the driver, all he told me was to rotate my hands in order for the square the clubface, which is horrible advice because it takes crazy timing to rotate the clubface into the right position every time, just a very inefficient way of swinging. Rather than doing all that B.S, he should've strengthened my grip, and teach me how to swing on the correct swing plane. He also told me to try and get the toe of the club to the sky in the first part of the takeaway, which is horrible advice for someone who slices because you are effectively just unnecessarily opening the clubface. In the first part of the takeaway, the clubface should be even with the spine angle. Overall, just awful teaching style and advice. I have learned way more from instructors on YouTube for free! ( Shawn Clement and Mike Malaska are the best IMO) I still do not understand why he has such good reviews... read more

Disclaimer: I have been good friends with Fred Hanover for more than a decade, and it was only a month ago I decided to try my hand a golf. Prior to going to one of his group lessons in late July, my last golf experience had been a disastrous middle school PE experience in the early 1980s. What to say about Fred Hanover? He is AWESOME is a good place to start. I started going to him because I wanted to learn to golf for business reasons. I was in California for 10 weeks and from week 1 (when I hit 1 ball out of 10) to week 10 (I completely impressed a colleague on the course) I got so much knowledge and I learned one of the hardest sports out there. I moved to SoCal three years ago with my family from the Midwest and withing a couple of weeks I had signed up my kids for an after school golf camp with Fred. I was very impressed with the ease at which he handled a bunch of kids of various ages, balancing coaching on the range and practice greens with hole play. At that point I decided it was time for me to take up golf again after more than 20 years. All nerves, I took a couple private lessons with Fred. He put me at ease immediately, and he was able to correct several of my more obvious issues. All of a sudden I loved the game again!
