I have to believe that the only reason this place is still in business is because there are enough tourists that will eat here when there is literally nowhere else to go. Six items were on the menu: a soup of the day (rice and chicken) with bread, a ham and cheese sandwich, a chicken/bacon/sweetcorn sandwich (check the TripAdviser reviews if you want to hear more about that one), a vegan cheese and pickle sandwich, a pulled pork wrap, and a falafel/mango chutney wrap. Five pages of the six-page menu were drinks, coffee, and alcohol. This is not a food place. It looks like one. Based on old reviews and photos, maybe it used to be one. I did come in the afternoon, so maybe it's better for breakfast. Or maybe not. For the amount and quality of sandwich I got for 5 quid, I should have just gotten a meal deal at the co-op. Genuinely, a meal deal sandwich would have been better quality. My ham and cheese did have both ingredients, but the cheese was shredded and the ham was very thin-sliced and overwhelmed by the cheese. My guess is that it's made to be toasted, hence the shredded cheese, and that was an option for 20 pence-- but why on God's green Earth would you serve a cold sandwich with shredded cheese? The bread was bland and basic-- fine if you're making yourself something at home, but not something worth paying for at all. (Again, it was like a meal deal sandwich. But worse. I would never disrespect a meal deal sandwich like this.) Based on the service (or lack thereof) we received from the very beginning, I should have listened to my intuition and gotten up to find somewhere better. The wait staff are called that, I assume, because they will wait ten minutes for you to ask them if they can take your order, only to be repeatedly rude to you when you politely ask for the bare minimum amount of service. Full disclosure: I have worked in food service before. I sympathize with anyone who has to deal with customers. But when we weren't served, and went up to ask if our order could be taken, we were snapped at and told to go back to our table. No "apologies, someone will be there shortly". Not even a "sorry for the wait, we're very busy right now". Just "go back to your table". So we did. Which was a huge mistake. I've lived in Scotland for more than a year and I don't know if I've ever had a meal that depressing since living here. And I've made Pasta in Sauce at 3am with just water because I ran out of milk. I won't be too hard on our table's waiter because he was very young and inexperienced, and I expect he's received minimal, if any, training on how to wait tables. I honestly felt bad for him. He looked as though he would rather be anywhere else. In that way I felt a real connection to the wait staff; in fact, it was the only time I actually felt truly seen by them. I, too, would rather have been anywhere else. But that's not necessarily the vibe you want to be getting when you walk into a place. This place would be better off selling ready-made, takeaway sandwiches rather than masquerading as a restaurant and disappointing us at every turn. Seriously. Not to quote other media in a literal Yelp review, but my expectations were low and I was still let down. The only saving grace of this place was that it was clean and had wifi that was strong enough for me to send this picture of my sandwich to my friends and go "????????". Also there were two very cute dogs outside, although I don't believe they were hired by the restaurant. If you're desperate for food and don't really mind what you're spending money on, then this place is fine. Like I said, at least it's clean and has decent wifi. The Granary is a great little place right in Portree Square, across from the bus stop, making it a convenient place to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Their hours have changed, and do not open for breakfast until between 9-9:30, which can be too late for anyone trying to catch a bus or a tour from the square. We had lunch at The Granary, which was just OK. What we really enjoyed was having a mid-afternoon snack (afternoon tea), as they serve excellent coffee and tea drinks. The cappuccino and chai tea lattes were very good. They have a special drink on the menu that was absolutely decadent- the Hot Chocolate Royale! A case of pies, cakes, and treats is made fresh daily to tempt you, and everything is really good. The only tricky thing is the QR codes are used to place your own order, but if your phone gets poor service, you will have to order at the counter and tell them your table number. No-one told us this, and we had waited for quite a while until we figured it out, as the table service is minimal. read more

The two of us were seated on a first come first served policy at a 6-top table (the only table available) with the understanding that they might need to seat another couple at the far end. Fine. No problem. We settled in and ordered. Then a girl that seemed to have an inflated sense of self importance came over and insisted that we pack up and move to a newly opened 2-top. I found it very unsettling. If a party of 6 were to come looking for a table they surely would have understood, due to their party size, that they would need to wait 10-15 minutes. This was the absolute best food I've had in Scotland! Certainly didn't expect it, however tis' so! The duck leg confit waffle was comparable to five star quality! Tender duck leg served over a waffle and black pudding. Topped with bacon and a sunny side egg. The grilled cheese was, just grilled cheese...three different cheeses...also delicious! Ten minutes later when others who arrived after us placed their order, I asked at the counter if I could order there. I was told to return my table. I told them we hadn't ordered while others had who arrived after. I was told to return to my table. I asked nicely and they were not friendly in their response. Had we only had poor service I likely wouldn't have been motivated to write a review. The rudeness of the employee was uncalled for. Our order was eventually taken. Our food was delivered. Some of my more recent reviews included negative experiences with the businesses, so I am VERY happy to be writing one about an amazing experience where EVERYTHING exceeded expectations. I highly recommend this place. Don't be fooled by the bare-bones website; it's a very nice place with high-quality dishes and service. Upon arrival, we were told they couldn't accommodate a group of six on a busy Saturday night if we didn't have a reservation. A bummer, but totally understandable. After not finding anything else in the vicinity that we were excited about, we went back offering to be split into two groups if that helped. It did, and they were able to seat us within 30 minutes. Not only that, we didn't end up having to sit at two separate tables because a two-top opened up across the row from our four-top and the owner of the restaurant went out of his way to rearrange the layout of the section so we could make a six-top. We were extremely impressed and grateful. He was so friendly and paid the utmost attention to our comfort. I had a really hard time deciding what to order because everything looked so good. I went with the special: pork loin with scallops and prawns. I don't like seafood, so I was just looking forward to the pork loin and bed of mashed potatoes - I handed off the seafood to others in my group. The pork loin was extremely tasty and melted in my mouth. The mashed potatoes were good, but I didn't really like the sauteed greens that I ordered extra. There was one asparagus tossed in with some brocollini, spinach and bok choy. The combo was too weird for me and it didn't have any flavor. The others seemed to enjoy their meals too, so much that we ate more than we should have. No one went home with leftovers, and unfortunately we didn't make room for dessert. read more

Wowzer, this was a real actual gem of a find on the beautiful Isle of Skye. Walking into this place I thought I'd been transported back to an 80s fine dining restraunt. Fortunately the food in here was top notch and although pricey (like most places on Skye) this place was worth the expense. I started of with a (huge) portion of leak and potato soup, which was simply delicious and hearty, followed by a (stupendously massive) trio of fish and chips with mushy peas and tartar sauce. You heard right, a trio of fish consisting of battered salmon, haddock and seabass, yum! The proprietor of our B&B recommended the Granary when he dropped us off in the square on account of the rain. We walked around a few places, but ended up back here, and I'm so glad that we did. The decor was light and modern inside with pale blue walls and pictures of the ocean - a nice change from the dark wood at all the hotels and other spots in the area. Luckily we were there early enough, and there were only 2 of us, so that we got a table. We started with the potato and leek soup, but really should have just shared. One bowl was huge! The soup was pretty good, and the bread on the side was quite tasty. For the mains, I had the local game casserole, which I would call a stew, while Jimmy had the Scottish salmon. Jimmy's throat was hurting, so he wasn't able to enjoy the salmon as much as I enjoyed the casserole. The savory, but slightly sweet sauce, with cooked vegetables (carrots and potatoes), and nice chunks of local game was delicious! The portion was huge! I really enjoyed the small "crouton" of haggis that was served on the side, which gave a change in texture and added some salt. I felt quite sad that I couldn't finish my meal and that my mother wasn't near by for me to share it with her, since she really would have loved it. Nice cafe for lunch, breakfast or dinner in Portree. The cakes looked fabulous and was disappointed I did not get to try any. The fish and chips I had was cooked well and the portion was huge. Service here is friendly and everyone in our group really enjoyed their meals. I would happily come back here for a meal when in town. I like the food at the Granary. The decor is classy. Wooden, candle-lid tables setting the mood for a relaxing, post-travel, nice evening. It has a slightly more upscale feel than The Isles or the Cafe nearby. I ordered the lamb and my friend from Brazil ordered braised beef. My lamb was made right, with good taste even without the mint. My friend's beef dish was also delicious. Best part? I REALLY liked the Haggis and EVEN the black pudding! The Haggis actually tasted good, not like the texture of grind kidney or liver in some places. Even my friend who developed a repugnance to Haggis thought it was good. Black pudding is not bad either. Downers: Bread wasn't serve unless you pay (about £1-2), but food came out fairly quickly. Waitress service was A-ok. This isn't like fine dining, but more comfortable, casual dining. Prices are just a tiny bit pricier but food is definitely worth it. read more

The waiter cleared and cleaned tables around me and then took off his apron, put on a jacket, and left. I tried to make eye contact with another server, but no dice. Finally I heard a waitress tell another table that you go to the bar, tell them your table number, and pay, which is what I did. They didn't respond to an email so I messaged their Facebook account for the reservation. They responded days later, but happily confirmed. It's a pretty building and cozy inside. They were really busy when we arrived for dinner but had our table ready and sat us down immediately. My mom and I ordered risotto. It had a lot of flavor but too saucy. Service was good. read more

Service was friendly and the food was delicious. The Lamb stew special was rich and flavorful (ask for some fresh bread to dip in the gravy--they don't bring it if you don't ask) and the smoked fish platter was really different and so very tasty. You can hit a fish and chips place or a fancy restaurant, but you want decent food at a reasonable price. The Granary performed for us. I've been visiting the Granary cafe for years when visiting Skye - and lately it occurred to me to ask myself: why? I don't really like the place very much these days and only really continue to go there because it's always my family's first choice. Although the staff are very friendly and pleasant and the service is fine, I find the atmosphere rather gloomy in this cafe. I don't really like the food all that much either - not enough fresh and tasty wholesome stuff for me. Also I'm very fussy about a good cup of coffee and it just isn't nice enough here. So next time I'm going to drag my family to another cafe to see what that's like - just hope they aren't too set in their ways now! read more

The Granary in Portree used to be one of my favourite places to go. However, although I still enjoy the cafe area where I can enjoy a variety of sandwiches, soup, or hot meal, I must say that standards seemed to have slipped a little over the past few years. I can't put my finger on it - perhaps it was just the mediocre staff at the time of my last visit; there used to be a more mature staff presence but on my last visit the staff appeared to be straight out of high school and not very happy to be working tables. However, it was a Saturday so maybe I shouldn't be too harsh. The Granary also has a bakery attached which used to be famous for its cakes and breads but, sadly, the variety on offer has dwindled and there isn't such a large selection these days. Maybe it's due to a number of factors - economic climate being top of the list of course, but it's a shame to see a thriving and popular place looking so down in the dumps of late. The bakery is very popular with the pupils of the local Portree High School who turn up in their droves for bridies and sausage rolls for their take-away dinners. Personally, whenever I'm in Portree and realise it's 12 noon I steer well clear of the bakery knowing that with all those school kids, I just 'aint gonna get near the counter. When I was at school, we were never allowed out to forage in the local shops - now I know why! read more

Was in Portree for the day and went for lunch to the other place the same owner has, but were not serving food at the time. They recon the granary so we gave it a go. Foofd was OK, not exceptional but OK, and the prices were descent for what it was provided. Toilets were in an OK condition, taking into account it a tourist passage. Did not like the burning smell, and atmosphere coming out of the kitchen. All my clothes and hair smelled on the way out... read more

Outstanding. We found this restaurant when we stayed at a nearby hotel on Skye. We arrived too late for lunch but it gave us a chance to look at the menu and decide to book for dinner. We're we glad we did. The restaurant was full so we needed the reservation. Service was great - outstanding considering we were in rural Scotland (albeit in a foodie area). The presentation was exceptional I had an appetizer of scallops presented on a bed if basil, with an array of vegetables sculpted around the Scallops. Equally impressive was my game stew. I reviewed this place on Tripadvisor. Original Review: We looked at trip advisor for a breakfast/coffee shop to go to before a day out. The Granary looked like a winner. However, we didn't read deep enough into the reviews. We we're sorely disappointed after having wonderful dining experiences in our 3 week Scotland trip. Not only was their coffee terrible (wash the pot!), Alice, who we believe to be the owners daughter was extremely rude and inefficient. All we can say is absolutely stay away. There are multiple places in Portee that want your business. (Recommend the Antler Bar and Grill across the street.) Owner Response: Thank you for your comments regarding our member of staff, I am truly sorry that I wasn't there to have spoken to you directly. Your comments state that our staff member was rude and inefficient but fail to explain how. There are always two sides to every story and I wasn't there to witness either, but certainly from viewing the CCTV footage of your interaction with our young member of staff, it is obvious that your hand actions and general demeanour at the table and later at the counter were aggressive, verging on offensive. The young waitress's demeanour on the CCTV was by contrast passive and defensive. Even with today's push and drive towards equality in the work place there are still some people, generally middle aged or older that perceive the Service Industry staff to be inferior or somewhat less than them, especially if those staff are much younger. Should that customer be having a bad day it seems quite acceptable to them to tell a waitress or waiter what they really think, but in a fashion that would be regarded as aggressive or abusive, but certainly deemed unacceptable in any other industry. Although a very small minority, these are the ones you remember, not the thousands of lovely appreciative customers. It wears you down and scares good hard working younger girls and boys away from the industry. Again, I genuinely wish I had been there to speak to you, rather than effectively give you free reign to speak to my younger members of staff in the fashion that only you felt was appropriate. Second Response: I would hope you'd double check your facts before responding to a customer, as I am not a middle aged person, but in my 20's. As I do not need to defend myself to you as this is a very poor response, I will instead address the viewers. When we first walked in, the owners daughter threw menus at us and rolled her eyes at us. As a server myself, I did not understand the hostility towards people who just walked in. She was rude and snappy when taking our orders. Another couple came in after us. She went to "greet" them. By greeting, I mean saying "What do you want?" That couple promptly left. As she was walking back to the server station, she said "I hate people." When we asked to speak to the manager, she said nothing was wrong. We of course explained how frustrated we were with our complete and utter lack of service. To her replying why she was so rude was because "you didn't smile when you walked in." In all my experience as a server, if I had said that to a paying customer, I would have been fired on the spot. However, the food is not uniformly good or bad. I had a tasty and well presented starter, then a main with meat cooked until it was leather. (But with tasty sides!). Went in with our one year old as it looked child friendly and sported a sign outside that said 'home baking and local produce'. great!' I thought. ordered the fish and chips and my partner ordered the Soup. Fish and chips came ..well. a rock hard stale' Ross's chip shop haddock' or similar camedefinitley not local.. Very very poor Had to wait about 40 mins for minestronie soup and when it came it was inedible. tasted like Bisto mixed with Vimto.. Disgusting. Felt ripped off and will never go back especially as for the same price we could have had a great lunch down by the harbour. Worst food i've had for a loooong time. read more
