I went to this restaurant with my Vegan friend when we were doing our trip around the highlands. There were so many things wrong with our experience I have to list them. Bearing in mind, I actually called the restaurant to give them some feedback directly as the young girl looking after things when I was there was very nice but then the manager (the following day) was so incredibly rude and defensive when I was listing my issues I felt it necessary to write a negative review. All he needed to say was sorry for your bad experience and treatment of your vegan friend, I appreciate the feedback and that would have been it.
1. - the cheapest main on the menu was £15, entrees about £7-£8 and desserts £7-£8. The meal I selected was £18.50 because it sounded absolutely delicious - Sea bass with smoked salmon, tiger prawns and crunchy vegetables. What came out was sea bass with a very bland chowder which had cooked salmon and cherry tomatoes.
2. no tiger prawns came with my meal so I had to ask for them (when they were on the menu!!!
3, no crunchy vegetables at all (I told the restaurant they needed to change their menu to accurately reflect the dish as I never would have ordered what I received). I was told they did this
4. Sea bass was meant to be pan fried but the skin was chewy.
5. I had to ask for my empty tonic bottle and glass to be taken away from the table despite the waitress coming up a few times after it had been finished.
6. When you get your bill you have to take it to the counter to pay which is ridiculous considering what they charge. I had lunch at a little local pub earlier in the pay which was less than half the price, so much tastier and I could pay the bill at my table.
7. My friend is Vegan and the way the chef dealt with her request for a vegan meal was awful. he said she could only have a salad and bread but then decided to throw in some greens with it only didn't bother to drain the water do they came in a bowl half full with water - disgusting treatment. We had been to a restaurant called the Fish House in Oban the night before and the service was impeccable. The Chef made a risotto dish from scratch for my friend and said if we had have called ahead he would have ordered more ingredients in for her (winning - there are more and more vegans in this world now, get with the program). Whilst she wasn't expecting this, a little more care would have been nice.
On the night, the girl agreed with my concerns (especially the vegetables sitting in a bowl of water) so very nicely dealt with my issues and gave us our drinks and my friends salad/vegetables for free. No complaints about her or the other waitresses that night. She also gave me the option to change my meal but I was so starving I said not to bother.
I would highly recommend you go elsewhere for your dinner when visiting Portree as this restaurant is extremely overpriced for VERY average food and a rude Manager and Chef. read more
