Alas, life changes and I don't really frequent this corner anymore with Marsh long gone and PetsMart no longer having as many live animals as they once had. While I'm not exactly a crafty person, I've seemingly always found something I like at Michaels. It's also always been a prime option for me when I've needed something framed. I'm not a fan of Hobby Lobby for a variety of reasons - so, on those rare occasions I need something in the craft arena this tends to be where I go. I'd been looking for an affordable Christmas wreath along with a couple basic decorations. I saw the Michaels Black Friday ad and decided to stop by after church today. This location has accessible parking, though it's not ADA (there's no actual signage). There's an appropriate curb cut and automatic doors. As is nearly always true for craft stores, the aisles tend to be a bit difficult for wheelchair users. I do like that they have the shorter carts. Store personnel tended to be friendly and I will say that craft-oriented shoppers tend to be friendlier than the "cut in front of me and you'll die" shoppers at your usual big box retailers. Michaels was definitely decked out for Christmas and it really dominated the store. They have pretty much all self-serve kiosks for check-out these days - I like that they have big screens (let's face it, Michaels has a high number of older shoppers). I didn't find everything I'd hoped to find at Michaels, though I did find a couple great items at great prices. Check out was quick and the rep was super helpful. Heck, I even signed up for the rewards club (3% back on all purchases, 6% once you hit $300). They also can look up your receipts if you need to make a return - great for folks like me who tend to lose receipts. Michaels has classes, events, and they still have a great selection of frames. They're great for knitting supplies, hobby activities, art supplies, and much more. For Christmas, you can get quite a bit at a wide variety of prices. This was a solid experience. It sure wasn't five star, especially because some of the aisles definitely had some accessibility issues, but it was a very solid four-star and I'd definitely go back. I will note they frequently have items outside their door - in itself wonderful, however, at times they do block the sidewalk in case you're wanting to go to PetsMart next door. It can be pricey, but after spending hours on my paintings, I wanted the best I could afford. I'm extremely happy and will take all my future artwork there for framing.

I specifically wanted my artwork framed with no glass, and they gave me exactly what I wanted. My artwork is now hanging up on my wall, beautifully framed. The frame blends in and doesn't take away from the art at all, which is exactly what I wanted. I am so pleased with the final product. However. (Oh, you knew there was a "however" coming, didn't you?) When I placed my order, I worked with a woman who was super friendly and helpful, and she told me that it would take about three to four weeks to complete the project. No problem -- I wasn't in any hurry. So, a month goes by. Then six weeks. Finally, it's been two months, so I get on the horn to see what's the hold up. A man answers the phone and cuts me off as I'm talking. "Yeah, we have all the pieces in; we just need to assemble it. We'll have it done tomorrow." Seriously? So ... it takes you less than 24 hours to frame my artwork, but you've been sitting on it for who knows how long? What would have happened if I didn't get on the phone and ask where my framed piece was? Would it have sat in the shop indefinitely? I hate having to remind people to do their jobs, and that's exactly what I had to do. Then, when we picked it up, there was no apology from them about forgetting the job or being late. They just handed over the artwork. Uh ... thanks? Anyway, the story has a happy ending because I love my framed art and they did a good job. I just wish they would have done their job in the timeframe they promised, without me having to remind them to do their job.

They also sell kinetic sand, Magna-Tiles, magic water marbles, building blocks, floor puzzles, board games, educational DVDs and CDs ... I could go on, but then this review would just be a list of every cool plaything that's out there. But they don't just sell toys here. This place is also a school supply store and place for teachers to buy items for their classrooms, including banners, posters and things for classroom organization. There's also a space in the back of the store just for laminating. The prices are comparable to other brick-and-mortar stores, and you might be able to find some of their products cheaper online, however, I can't think of a place in the area that has this much selection, where you can actually see the toys and products and -- in many cases -- play with them. Which brings me to another reason why I love Lakeshore: They have stations throughout the store set up with different toys and games for the kids to play with. It's so fun! (Well, it's fun for kids; it's not so fun for the adults who have to pry the kids away from the store.) On Saturdays and Sundays, they offer drop-in art workshops for kids for free. This is a large chain, so their prices are what they are. As far as this store goes, the employees separate it from other similar establishments and I had a very pleasurable shopping experience.

When I contacted the owner I figured 'what the heck couldn't hurt'... This one was my 'reach' like those college apps you fill out knowing there's like a 2% chance you get in. I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was the owner very down to earth, but he was willing to work with me on price so that it was too. He sent it out to me the day after I paid just like he said he would do. Everything was well-packed and the piece was exactly as it appeared in the listing (only prettier in person lol). So I wound up with a gorgeous rig that also more than ticks my function boxes, when I really thought it was going to be out of my grasp going in. Lesson learned, never hurts to ask. Worst anyone can really do is say no, or maybe in some cases insult you; luckily this was a much more knowledgeable/professional person to deal with.
