The owner of this small cafe/deli is one of the many people running the operations behind the display counter. As you walk in the shop, you first see a little shop that sells cards and trinkets. In the far end is the display case and counter where you can order food. The other half of the restaurant is the dining area, where the food is brought to your table. The decor of this place is wonderful - quaint country cottage style theme with bright colours, simple wooden furnishing, while maintaining minimalism. Great place for a bunch of girls to meet for brunch (as was most of the clientele when we arrived for brunch before we headed out to go castle hunting for the day. The food selections are limited to sandwiches and salads as it is a cafe but they do a great job with the menu. We had: - two capuccinos - one chorizo and chicken wrap: tasted mexican and was recommended by the owner - one breakfast toastie: came with a delicious salsa The total was about 13 quid and the atmosphere makes you not want to leave. Also they have free wifi. They close at 5pm so it's not a place to have dinner. If I lived in Newport, I'd definitely be here all the time.

It's basic, but kept clean with a lovely little outside area with benches that would've been great if the weather was a bit more in our favour. ~ Customer Service: The primary reason for my 4 star review - the customer service was great. I understand that it would probably be stressful to accommodate for 15 people, but the waitresses did a fantastic job. We had to send in our order to the kitchen before the event, but when we arrived the food all came out timely so they obviously prepared! Even with such a huge task, none of our orders were missing or late - everything came out timely. We even decided to order dessert on the spot and coffees. I can't rate the organisation and efficiency of this place enough! ~ Food: The food was tasty at fair prices. I had the Lamb Shank which came with steamed veggies, bubble and squeak, and gravy on the side. The shank was beautifully cooked and gravy very flavourful and rich. If you order a dessert, you also receive a free coffee. --- Decent prices, good food, and very accommodating customer service. Can't ask for more when planning a birthday dinner!

How It Works... Very similar to Toby Carvery if you've ever been to any restaurants of that chain. You sit down, order your drinks, and then go up to the carvery section to choose your meats and trimmings. Pay extra for a larger plate and if you're not in the mood for a traditional roast there's a deli section and a few vegetarian options (vegetarian tofu sausages and things of that nature). Atmosphere: A surprisingly classy atmosphere with a very spacious seating arrangement. It's also on the second story, so there's a decent view. Food: Fantastic! Decks delivers quality you wouldn't expect. I would have never guessed that food sitting on hot plates can still taste fresh (they almost always get a bit of staleness over time) but Decks duly delivers. You can choose a combination of meats for your dinner. I had the roast beef and gammon. To be honest, I don't really know why I picked the gammon because normally I'm not very fond of the stuff. It's often much too salty for me, but the gammon at Decks was wonderful! The salt wasn't too overpowering and the beef was perfect too. Decks says they're proud of using fresh ingredients and the taste shows! The trimmings were all great and you can taste the quality. The only downfall with their food is that during my visit, they only had 2 types of gravy available - vegetarian and runny beef gravy. Seeing as how they have 3 other meats available that isn't beef you would think that maybe that have poultry gravy? But that's just nitpicking. The beef gravy was still fabulous. --- I'd definitely be keen on revisiting Decks, even if I don't plan on doing any shopping at Tesco.

The pot was the first one that showed on the search and with a decent review next to it's name and only being 100 metres away from my location it was the winner (after all who wants to walk miles for breakfast!) The cafe is located in a western arcade type row of shops which was nice, as the pervious review stated it isn't your every day greasy spoon cafe but at the same time it still has that homely none chain cafe feel which was a welcome surprise. The lady behind the counter told me to grab a table and she would be over to take my order. I went with "the big one" which was everything on the breakfast menu pretty much and I did remember not to say "full English" as I was in Wales after all haha. The cafe was pretty full and everyone seemed like locals to the cafe because the staff were chatting away happily with 90% of the people that were eating in. The food was lovely and arrived on my table really quick but you could tell nothing was rushed, if I had to pick a fault and this is only me being really picky it's the bread they served with the breakfast I always go for thick bread but this was medium (told ya I was being picky). But that takes nothing away from it being a really lovely local cafe with lovely staff if your ever in Newport and need breakfast make sure you drop in. OK, so they can do a good fry up and a nice cup of tea, so should any half decent cafe, however they also had plenty of wholesome, home cooked dishes on the menu like steak pie and the desserts, including bread and butter pudding, were only £2; unfortunately their big breakfast had defeated me. However room service did come and help us replace it. But if it was a 5 star resort! Then it shouldn't have been broken in the first place! In the lodge and all around the hotel there are shuttles you can order (free of charge) to take you anywhere and I guess that is nice. Because it cost so much a night it won't really be possible to stay a long time which leads to the next problem. Because of all the other people staying there it is really difficult to get into activities because you have to book them a day in advance and the app is quite faulty and buggy to even get a chance to book it and because you can barely stay there long. I came into here expecting to experience the 5 star experience and that I would try do do every activity but the sheer lack of time that you stay there it is incredibly difficult to do 4 activities out of the tens of ones it has to offer! In the evenings you can go for a fancy meal but some of them are outrageously expensive! I came here on a family reunion and for our evening meal we went to a buffet called The Olive Tree. In the buffet section you have a wide variety of foods and if you want chips I would recommend you don't have them unless you want your mouth to be filled with potato that is basically uncooked! They were flopping about and so delicate they were all squished and broken in the actual tub. So as a conclusion I think I have enjoyed staying here but the other factors have brought it down it wasn't as unexpected for a 5 star resort.

For one thing, I stopped here for a late breakfast, but upon seeing the Traditional English breakfast of the people sitting next to me, I had lunch instead. The Traditional Breakfast, truly is that, fried eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans from a can, pre-fab formed hashbrown patties, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms and toast with butter. This dish included black pudding, yet another protein, something which I tried elsewhere. The meal seemed to be very similar to what was served throughout Wales and the areas of England I had gone to while in there. It's not the type of food I'm used to, and for this experience I may have been feeling a bit battle weary in my almost two-week search for something much healthier. But even the safe meal I opted for was so-so. A tuna sandwich. The bread was soggy. This place calls itself a tea room, first, then a restaurant. And that may be where this place excels. But I don't know, because I didn't come here for afternoon tea. I did have a pot of traditional tea with cream on the side. It was as good as every other place I went to. I have a feeling this place has pretty good desserts to go with the tea they serve. But it's for someone else to discover and write about. The restaurant food here is very typical of traditional English food. If you're into that, go for it. If not, move on, and quickly.

Terrible service. I refuse to go there anymore.
