I've been meaning to try this place ever since I learned there was a WDM location. Located in a strip mall at the corner of Grand and EP True (by the HyVee), the decor is nothing special but it was light and bright inside. We were greeted and asked if we were dining in (it appears they do a brisk takeout business) and were told to sit where we wanted. It was surprisingly crowded for a Sunday afternoon at 4 pm. The menu is extensive and hubby and I both like Mediterranean food. I chose the Falafel plate, served with five falafel balls, hummus, a pita, and Greek salad. The portion was generous (ended up taking two falafel home). Served with tahini and their house green sauce (olive oil, cilantro, and jalapeño) It wasn't spicy but it was so delicious - I could get addicted to this thinking of all the other ways so could enjoy it!! The Greek salad was served with house dressing - garlic and yogurt, also very good. The falafel was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, and flavorful. The hummus was not at all grainy - smooth but just a tad bland. Hubby had the lamb skewers and liked them very much. Served with rice, salad, and hummus. He also took one of the skewers home. We both had the mango Fresca juice. A bit too sweet for me but I generally drink unsweetened beverages. Hubby liked it a lot. Service was friendly and we were checked on twice to ask how we liked our food. Generous portions, friendly service, good food, but not inexpensive (with tip, $55 for two) but what is inexpensive these days?? Every time my family and I go to any of the locations we ALWAYS enjoy ourselves. The staff is attentive to their guest, constantly checking on their tables and making sure that we are doing okay during the entire visit. We stopped here for lunch while driving through Iowa. We ordered the gyro sandwich and kofta kabob wrap with spicy potatoes. Both sandwiches were delicious. I've never had anything like the spicy potatoes. They were basically thick-cut potato chips smothered in garlic sauce (I think with tahini). The Green Olive It's a cozy, hidden gem with personalized service. I have been wanting to go for some time. It's conveniently located inside a shopping Center. It's not always easy to see. it's near the Hy-vee right by the Planet Fitness in West Des Moines. It's also about expectations, everyone is under staffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. The parking is easy and plentiful. The restaurant was clean. Everything was authentic, scratch-made dishes like kabobs, wraps, and hummus, they make their own Pita bread too! Its spacious, lots of tables and was very casual when I was there for lunch and I observed a very family-friendly atmosphere. The service was fast and efficient and they and they special packed it exactly how I wanted it. A Latina woman of a certain age was the server manager and she just went out of her way to make sure I got everything the way I wanted. She made great suggestions on packing because I told her I was probably gonna take some home so she separated things out for me like I wanted. I'd heard that the portions were huge and they certainly were. I got the #10 Gyros Mix which included a generous portion of gyros (Tender strips of lamb and ground steak gyro,) a skewer of U.S.D.A. Choice steak kabob, , a chicken Kabob, which i would call their version of Chicken Souvlaki (which means "little skewers" and refers to small, marinated, grilled pieces of chicken often served on skewers at traditional Greek restaurants) each platter also includes fresh made hummus with olive oil, *Mediterranean seasoned yellow rice, and a small salad topped with our house garlic lemon dressing, homemade pita bread and a green jalapeno sauce. Which was an interesting twist to Greek food. Usually its just Greek sauce is Tzatziki (pronounced "tsah-dzee-kee"), a cool, creamy dip or sauce made from strained yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil, and herbs like dill or mint, I asked for it to be packed to go even though I was eating in too. and she did an outstanding job of separating the cold salad and hummus from the rice and hot entries. The food was good and solid hot and delicious and the portions were really generous. They also included the traditional sweet white onions with the gyros Its a hidden gem and a wonderful quality restaurant. I will be back. Its owned by Silvestre and Veronica Duran -- who moved to DSM from California about six years ago to be closer to family. THIS SECOND LOCATION IS FIRE !! Finally made a visit to their West Des Moines location and it satisfied every craving we had. Ever since having my food experience in Burbank, CA December 2023, I was on the hunt to find the best Mediterranean close enough to taste like the west coast. Found Green Olive right after my trip and have been eating here for a year now and I can't stop. Won't stop. THE GREEN OLIVE is theeeee place. The kofta and steak kabob are the best. Can't go wrong with the lamb or the salmon kabobs either. Total for two meals and a drink $40.xx before gratuity. Everything here is excellent and consistently hot and delicious. Favorite drink here is the mango aqua fresca. Meals are HUGE and can be shared for $2.99 plate split fee. Desserts and appetizers made in house. Water, pop, and iced tea are offered for drinks. I love this location and the layout of the restaurant. Very spacious and open. Large windows and very inviting. Service is always excellent and very welcoming. I appreciate their consistent kind service and willing to please their customers. I've never experienced an "off day" with their service or food. I've meet Veronica, the owner, and her daughter. We visited the Green Olive this weekend and had a wonderful experience. We started off with the garlic fries. Our waitress was sooooooo nice and offered us to try the green creamy jalapeño sauce for dipping. It was so delicious so when she offered to give us some more we said YES PLEASE! We ordered the kafta kebab and the works which came with beef skewer, chicken skewer and the kafta kebab. All orders came with rice, salad dressed with delicious toum, hummus, pita bread and dolma. It also comes with a side of tahini and tzatziki. The portions are huge and wonderful! If you want it spicy, they offer local Iowa hot sauce to add to your meal. We were not able to eat everything so we took it to go. The lady was so nice she offered us give us jalapeño sauce to go as well. We loved everything about coming here, from the service to the food. Ordered takeout a couple weekends ago and had a beef kafta kabob plate. It was so delicious and my favorite was the salad part. Also ordered fries and we got a pretty big portion of those. I dipped them in my hummus since I can't have the naan because of my gluten intolerance. Everything else was good too but the salad had a garlicky white sauce that was finger licking good. The portions were huge and pricing is affordable. The staff is really friendly and the place was busy when we went to pick up. Definitely will be back to try some of their other dishes and I recommend this place to all. read more

Friend and I came in for lunch during the week as a new to us place to try. It was amazing! The food is delicious. I am vegetarian and the falafel was so good as well as the pita bread. We went to this restaurant based on a review by the Iowa Gallivant...not going to trust his opinion again. Sorry to post a bad review but the food is dreadfully mediocre here. I ordered the works plate with everything on it and my wife ordered the chicken and falafel plate. The staff was nice but certainly in no hurry to fill the order. We ordered two bottles of soda, one was cold and the other lukewarm. Then about a 15 minute wait for the food to arrive...we had to ask for ice for the drinks because no one checked on us in between. The portions were large but the food was dry dry dry...with the exception of the chicken which was very good. I am 90 percent certain none of the food was cooked fresh. It all had a reheated microwave feel to it. Sadly, even the pita was obviously store bought and hard as a biscuit. The falafel was dense and dry. The beef kabob and the kafta was way overcooked and both were physically tough to cut...to the point of my wife chiding me for shaking the table as I cut the food. The hummus was ok but essentially flavorless. The rice and salad were ok as well. 48 dollars before tip (yeah, it's not the wait staffs fault for awful food). read more

We stopped by The Green Olive last week after our Thursday night dominoes and had such a nice time. I had the chicken skewers and they were just wonderful--tender, well-seasoned, and came out nice and hot. The girls and I were all impressed. I also tried the chocolate bliss martini which was a little sweeter than what I usually drink, but it was smooth and very good. The service was friendly and attentive.
