Gorgeous classic pub look with tons of dark wood, but there's a twist: money from around the world stuck on the ceiling, with notes on each one. Even spotted a US$1 with TRUMP 2016 scrawled across. Ugh. Food was very good. We ordered fish and chips, and were astonished by the generous portion. Massive amount of cod fried to perfection (no mush!), although the fish was a bit firmer than usual. The chips in our fish and chips were excellent, some of the best I've ever had. Service was cordial but nothing crazy. Would highly recommend this place if you're in the area. This place is a MUST if you are visiting London. I can't say enough great things about this restaurant. It's off the beaten path and takes you away from the hustle and bustle of London tourism, which I love. The the old building's history is very interesting and if you ask the staff, they will tell you haunted ghost stories they've witnessed. The food is amazing, the beef Wellington is one of my favorite meals, and as someone who frequents London a couple times a year, I never miss the opportunity to stop by for dinner. If you find this place, or are nearby, find this place. It's literally down a street that you think is all flats. Or it's behind an area with construction down an alley. Either way, find this place. Was here 3 times, once for drinks, once for lunch and once for afternoon eats. Beef Wellington-yummmmm. Fish n chips looked great that a friend ordered. Tomato soup hit the spot on a chilly day. Service was good on all occasions. I hear their sticky toffee pudding is excellent but sadly didn't get to try it. I'll return the next time I am in London. read more

Excellent place for lunch after seeing some of the sights of London. We started with the scotch egg that my son said was one of the best he had found in the city and it was very good. We had some very flaky and tasty meat pies, with peas, carrots and crispy chips. Our party also tried the bangers and mash which were also very good. They had a nice selection of local brews and the atmosphere is very traditional. I highly recommend it. Food - 5 Stars Some of the best pub food we had on our visit. You need to try the Scotch Egg! Nice legit London pub and restaurant! We went here on a Saturday night to try some true London fare. There's a restaurant and pub side. The restaurant was completely booked - so make reservations if you want more of a dining experience. We were able to order from the pub and found a little table at the side to enjoy our snacks. We ordered scotch eggs and beef Wellington. I don't have a baseline to go off of for these dishes, but they seemed well prepared and delish to me. Yes, this place is hard to find. So much so that I led my wife in the wrong direction that cost us 20 min. (In my defense, it was our first night ever in London.) No worries, I figure; the website says they're open 'til 11pm and serve food until 10pm and it's only 9:30. Wrong. Kitchen was closed. Plus after such a long walk, my wife was parched. They were nice enough to sell me a small bottle of water for about $3 USD. I was handed a business card and told it's best to call before visiting to make sure the kitchen is open. When you search for beef Wellington, this pub shows up. I was prepared to look for this place since reading the reviews of this spot being in an alley. Boy was this hard to find. It really feels like it's in a gated nice residential neighborhood. Walked around for about 30 minutes and went around streets and locked gates to finally find. You'd really need to be looking for it to actually come here. No one would ever stumble into this pub unless you lived there. Very British pub feel filled with locals. Staff aren't the friendliest possibly cause we were tourist? They had closed off their seating area for a party and bar seating was limited. We ordered: Scottish egg which came with a brown sauce and was quite tasty - 5 euro Beef Wellington - 30 euro We waited about 40 minutes for this and the staff did not try to keep us updated or check on us to see if we needed anything. When it finally came, it was way overcooked. Not even a little pink. Flavor was good and it came with kale and potato. Definitely disappointing since we came just for this. Maybe they were on a off day and only cared about the party? But I'd suggest to skip this spot if you are coming from far away. I was not pleased with our experience here. Granted, it is a pub and we did arrive later in the evening, but still. Not good. I ordered a veggie burger and asked for the onion rings on it to be on the side - since they're deep fried. After waiting about 20 minutes my husband's burger came out and I got a side salad and a side order of onion rings. I asked where my veggie burger was and the guy looked all surprised. So apparently that was a screw-up. He came back about 10 minutes later and said it would be out shortly. Meanwhile, my hubs ate his burger as I told him not to wait. We were STARVING after spending all day walking around London and this is the place he wanted to eat so he chose it online based on the reviews from Yelp and the photos as well as the menu that seemed to have a few healthier choices for me. We didn't see any of that on the menu we were provided so all I could do was choose a veggie burger. When my burger finally did come out - it had been deep-fried. Which made me sad because it looked like it would've been delicious - I could see pieces of veggies inside but I broke a piece off with my fork and grease dripped out. I wanted to cry. Hard to find and well worth it. The Grenadier, tucked down the alley, is a small pub, typical of what you would expect. The best part is the fact that it's no on the High Street so unless you know it's there, you would not stumble upon it, keeping it local. With dark woods and small tables, this is a pub that time has forgotten. The food is on par with the rest of your experience and pairs perfectly with a pint. A story and a meal! I really enjoyed our dinner at this place. Walking distance from Hyde Park it's hidden behind a neighbor and embassies. The food was probably the only good food I've had in London. I ordered the Steak Pie and Mash. Hubby ordered the Beef Wellington dish. Both were cooked well and flavorful. The atmosphere is also very intriguing (in a good way). Built in the 1700s, it used to be a bar for soldiers to hang out it's said to be haunted by a young soldier who was beaten to death by his comrades when he was found cheating in a game of cards. Look up at the ceiling and see all of the foreign currencies left by guests who tried to pay off his debt! I would def come back again next time I visit London and I'm bringing friends. read more

I found this place on Yelp. It is a couple of blocks down from Buckingham Palace hidden from Main Streets. We didn't have a reservation but they still have a table for us around 8 o'clock. It has a very comforting ambience no stupid televisions. Very warm and friendly staff with the a lot of local patrons. The food like pictured is amazing. Simple dishes,ingredients, delicately cooked. My husband ordered a fish and chips i had the beff pie. I even ordered a creme brulee that was pretty yummy. I highly recommend eating here! 5 star for experience. Felt I was stepping back in time to what I'd imagine pubs were like in the olden days. No music. No tvs. Just a small cramped place with friends all celebrating another victorious day of work. It was an amazing people watching place as well- so many interesting people that seemed to have interesting stories. We too felt that we were going to be kicked out and not welcome because it is a locals place. By the end, everyone had warned up to us Pacific NW-erners. The waiter even smiled! 4.5 star for food. The sweet potato fries and beet salad were amazing. The burger was to die for. Fish and chips were good (more oily than I have had) and the beef Wellington was good (wanted to try). Maybe I'm not a fan of fried food and rare meat so I am a bit biased. I'm sure if you love rare meat, their beef Wellington seemed like it was authentic. No one on our table loves to eat cow's blood. We had an amazing evening. Service was as expected in a pub. They forgot drinks, never filled our waters, didn't check in often... Yet that was the charm of the place. My husband and I stopped in for dinner while on a trip this past January. This is a really cool old pub with money stapled to almost every inch of the ceiling. The beef wellington was good, but overcooked on the ends. The fish and chips will not be a repeat order. The batter was great, but the cod was definitely farm raised and had a mush like texture. French fries, who can mess that up. They were thicker "steak fries" style. The bill all together was reasonable, but the prices are definitely not consistent and somewhat odd. 25 pounds for beef wellington, 5.65 pounds for a London Pilsner and 9.70 for 2 Kronenbourg 1664 lagers. An epically good location. Hidden off mews and side streets by Hyde Park Corner it just waits for a nice sunny day so you can perch on the edge of the street and rest your feet on the cobbles. A couple of American friends are coming to visit next week and this will undoubtedly be the place I take them for the touch of old school classic London. PS make sure you spot the guard box outside the front. Apparently this is so when royalty used to drink here they could station their guard there. A former resident of the mews told me about this pub and said it was fabulous, so I took a break between the V&A Museum and the Natural History Museum to head on down for an early dinner. Being tucked away in a residential area makes it a little hard to find but it was worth it. It definitely fulfilled my need for a proper English pub and for some delicious fish and chips. You could tell this was a popular local spot and most of the people in there were friendly. Next time I get across the pond I will have to stop on in again and try some of their other dishes. read more

Such a cool, hidden little gem! As the most haunted pub in London, this was definitely worth going a little off the beaten path for the experience. The BF and I shared the beef Wellington. It was really, really good. The portion was enough for the two of us (although if you're hungry I would maybe share another appetizer to start). The beef was tender and flavorful and accompanied with some green beans, carrots, potatoes, and a roasted tomato. Paired with some beers, the Wellington was the perfect lunch meal! I'm bucking the trend here and I know it. I think this place has a lot of potential but I think that I got pretty poor service and the food was really not good at all. We came in here for a quick lunch and our bartender pretty much gave us an attitude from the moment he eyed us. Yes we are tourists but that does not give you the right to lie to us. We asked about dining and the bartender inquired if we had made a reservation. We said that we did not and that we would gladly sit in the pub and eat. We ordered the special pie of the day and a ham and chutney sandwich. I asked for it on brown bread but it came on white. Simple mistake no biggie. As we sat eating, many British folks showed up, clearly without reservations and they were seated promptly. Another American was in the pub as well and asked about the status of his order. The bartender essentially told him that he should learn to wait or find a McDonald's. I can appreciate sarcasm but this guy was just being rude. So there you have it. My experience definitely left a lot to be desired and frankly, I've definitely had better times in London. read more

This was a great find. I traveled to London to explore the culture and felt it necessary to frequent a local pub for dinner and drinks. Walking inn I was suddenly transported back to an 18th century food and drink frenzy. The Bloody Mary was the best my wife ever had and the Gin and Tonic was made with the finest tonic water served separately in a twist off bottle. We had the mushrooms and Stilton cheese for an appetizer. The cheese was not too heavy and only lightly accented the rich flavorful mushrooms. For my main course I had the Bream Fish sautéed. The skin was crunchy and the meat was flakey. My wife had the duck breast which was cooked to perfection. Both dishes were served with mashed potatoes and arugula. Tucked back on a small side street mixed with consulates, close to Hyde park it's a bit romantic. Service was first class, patient and pleasant, efficient and friendly. Food was great! Ok, so it's well-hidden, yes. It has oddles and oddles of charm for our American cousins, yes. Is it anything more than a pretty good boozer? Probably not. Came here out of curiosity after seeing many of the reviews here on Yelp. Now, maybe it was because I went on a Monday lunchtime but the place was quiet as a mouse and had about as much atmosphere as a doctor's waiting room. There was no background music and despite the barman's perfectly amicable demeanour the place still felt like it was a local pub for local people. We ate in the small bar area, and boy, is it small. Opting for the bar menu rather than the a la carte in the main bar / restaurant. The burger was pretty damn good and probably one of the best burgers I've had in a gastro pub, but for £9 (without fries) it should've been. I want to rave about this place but the lack of any atmosphere, the locals staring blankly on, and the general 'weirdness' I just can't. Maybe I just hit it on a quiet day. But, even on a busy one, I can't imagine you'd have much fun to be honest as you'd either be squashed in the small main bar, in near-darkness in the main eating area or sipping your pint on the street (probably the best option) but then you may as well be in Hyde Park. As The Park Tower Knightsbridge has become my home away from home lately, it makes sense that I would need a new local bar to call home as well. Big thanks to the Yelp community for helping me find this place, but also thanks to Google Maps for managing to actually guide me there. Other reviewers have given the directions down pat, but do note that once you turn into Old Barracks Yard, you're going to be right at the service exit for The Berkeley hotel, so you might do well to stay on the sidewalk by the office building. Now - on to the venue itself. It's a Taylor Walker establishment, so you can expect a good experience in general, but The Grenadier staff manages to be discreet yet attentive. The bar staff help with clearing plates in the main dining room, but order taking and looking after the customers falls on a very friendly gentleman named Paul. After only a few visits, he'd taken to looking after me, opening up reserved tables when I've come in for a late dinner and suggesting meal options that I've roundly enjoyed. Food recommendations - for starters I'd say either the foie gras or the French onion soup. The soup isn't heavily-caked with cheese, and is actually quite a nice light start here. For the meal itself, I've had and been okay with the fish & chips, but would strongly suggest the shepherd's pie or especially the lamb pie, which comes with a choice of starch and vegetable as sides. Their fries (ahem...chips) are better than the mashed potatoes, as the latter are fairly bland and require some heavy addition of salt & pepper. On the beer front, I've seen some changes in their taps over time, but I generally tend to order London Pride if they have it. That seems to be one of the downsides to such a small yet popular venue, as I've had to choose a second and sometimes a third beer given how quickly they seem to run through their supply. On the other hand - you can be sure that you're not going to get beer that's been sitting there for any overly long period of time. My only complaint here has to be about the time the kitchen closes. According to Taylor Walker's own website, the food serving times are from 1200-2200. I've walked in at 2132 and been told that the kitchen closed at 2130, and after having had this happen for 2 days in a row (the prior day was at 2140), I asked for Paul and he was good enough to accommodate my request for a late after-work dinner. Still - it would be good to know when guests who show up can expect to be served, and when they should plan to go elsewhere. Prices aren't terribly expensive as a New Yorker, and I look forward to many returns to this quiet and secluded gem. read more

Beer selection could be better as its all a bit Kronenbourgy but thats just me being a bit of a fool. Is the food good? It looked good, but also, its a pub without the word 'gastro' before it so likely made in a factory in Romania. Excellent ye olde boozer in Knightsbridge, not a million miles from Hyde Park corner. Not contrived, just an old, rural and local feel, set in a gorgeous mews. Stocks a good selection of ales, sells competent bar food and has a restaurant 'out back' which I've not tried and probably never will. Highly recommended, especially in the summer so you stand outside, if you're in the neighbourhood. Tip: If on a date then approach from Knightsbridge Road so that you get to it via weird back alleys that look like someones driveway, you'll win kudos for finding this little gem :-) read more
