The Sunday roast is lovely! Especially with an Abbot Ale. A very charming pub not far from the bridge.

This pub is near perfect, here are the reasons why: 1) The atmosphere is so far removed from yobbish. You will never find a yob in here, only nice people wanting a nice, relaxed time. They refuse to have T.V s in there and do not play music. On cold nights they light fires, and it gets so cosy, I never want to leave at closing time when they ring the big bell for last orders. 2) They have a great variety of all sorts of tipples, with lovely wines, local ales and so on. And the prices are not too bad either, you can get a decent wine for just under £10. 3) The food is insanely good. I would reccoment the aberdeen angus burgers and I dare you now to try and eat a whole one of them. I bet you can't. And with the hand but chips... for lighter meals they have great baguettes, like the steak and onion ones or a great ceaser salad. And don't get me started on the puddings. Always check out the special's board, because it will have you drooling. 4) Location, well for me this is great because it is right by my parents house. I even go there with my parents sometimes, that is how good it is! and because the back is next to the river, in the summer the beer garden is perfect. But get there early to get a sit as the place is always bustling. It is one of the oldest pubs in the area, retains so much character and the owners are just lovely. The Griffin is a busy pub not far from Caversham bridge. I called on a weekday evening, and the place was very busy. You find a table and place your order at the bar, but as I was on my own and the place was very busy this was a challenge. Once I managed to get sat down the menu has a good range and the price was reasonable, 2 courses cost around £9-19. My chicken starter was good, but the main was dissappointing. It was described as a beef & ale pie with mash, so I was expecting something with a pastry crust served with mashed potato. What arrived looked like shepherds pie served with cauliflower and broccoli: unfortunately most of the mash had sunk into the gravy and the whole thing looked a mess. So if you add not as descibed to looks a mess and you get less than impressed. I expected to really enjoy my visit, it was certainly buzzing and lots of people were eating, but overall I was dissappointed. I will however give it another try when I am in the area. read more

Bug in my friends food, two hour wait before ordering. I had the veggie burger which tasted good despite everything else.

I used to go here about 10yrs ago. I have recently started going back on Saturday evenings before going for a curry across the road. Although I haven't personally eaten here for ages, it's very much a pub to eat in. I've just been for the beer that's fine with a reasonable selection. This place gets very busy so finding an unreserved table means turning up fairly early. I do like this pub & is fun to watch people - loads of friends & families turn up. Worth a visit but judging by other comments - I'll avoid the vegetarian roast on Sundays! read more

Great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, gourmet food and local beer. Had an excellent dinner and drinks. Sat in the pub section which was cozy and fun. Easy parking in the back. Tried the Asian-spiced duck croquettes for a starter and they were tasty. They had a great autumn game menu from which I tried the guinea fowl supreme, very tasty with excellent sauce and veggies. Husband got a burger and chips which were good. Had our five year old with us and they had a great kids menu from which he ordered the chicken lollipops (he ate them up), cheeseburger, and a double potted chocolate mousse that came out in a cute little terra-cotta pot. Overall a great meal. Really enjoyed it and would love to return! read more

I love this pub. the food comes in huge portions and you will not be disappointed with the taste. I had the steak and bombadier ale pie with vegetables and i could not finish it all. the pub is traditional - quite low ceilings, low lighting, dark wood everywhere. The choice of beers and ales is quite big and my Bombadier pint was great. Service was very quick - around 15 minutes from order to table. Will continue to visit this pub. read more

I managed to get out to this pub a couple of times on this trip. Overall I think this is a great little pub. It is conveniently located and they have a good selection of beers, menu is not bad. Tried a few different things and they were all good, only thing I could say was that the portions were rather small, myself having a rather good appetite I could have probably done 2 mains or would have been good if I ordered a starter as well. read more

Met some friends there for Sunday roast on a trip to England. Food was excellent, had the lamb shoulder. Service was to notch, quick bar and wait staff. Overall an excellent experience and a great pub to stop at, we'll definitely be back! read more

This pub is located near the Thames River and the Caversham Bridge in Reading and is certainly your quintessential English pub. The menu has your classic English pub staples and the bar had several English beers on tap. I always like to take in the local fare when I'm in a new place, so I went with the fish and chips and started with their soup of the day which was a tomato and bean soup. The soup was flavorful, although I thought some of the beans were kind of undercooked. The fish and chips were exactly what I expected. The fish has a crispy outside with a flavorful inside. The chips were nice and crispy like I prefer them. I also had one or maybe 2 of their local bitter beers, which was really good. I ended the meal with their apple pie and ice cream, which was just ok. The pie crust seemed too buttery, which I never thought was possible, and the apples were pretty tart, but it was still good. Our server was friendly and checked on us enough, but I had to always ask to get my water refilled. It was a good English pub and I'd definitely go back when I'm in Reading. read more

Lovely setting off the Thames and always car parking spaces. Food is hearty and delicious for the price. Lovely atmosphere as feels like a good old pub reminds me of crackling log fires in the winter and sitting out over the river in the summer. friendly staff and good food on a weekend afternoon, what more could you ask for? read more
