I have long searched for a reputable barber that provides consistent haircuts, is knowledgeable about hair styles and types, and has an eye for detail. Having been on this search post-pandemic, I stumbled upon the Groomsmith. Specifically, I scheduled a haircut with Dylan, and since then, I will never go anywhere else. The Groomsmith is conveniently located just on the outskirts of downtown in a small-er shop. The venue is kept modern and fresh with white walls and blueish accents. There are 8/10 spots for barbers and one bar where they serve beer and coffee for patrons. Each "barber booth" is equipped with everything, including hairdryers, air pumps, etc. It's clear that each barber has an eye for detail and takes pride in their work at the Groomsmith. When I first met Dylan, we discussed my typical haircut and he took the time to figure out how my hair naturally grows and how to best cut it. From there, Dylan balances his time between focusing on cutting hair and creating conversation, easily making everyone feel relaxed and comfortable. I took my 7 year old for a routine haircut. I have gone to Groomsmith and never had an issue so I figured this was a 2 foot putt. My kid was nervous as he was surrounded by a lot of men in a barber's for the first time and the guy who cut his hair was admittedly receptive to this. The cut itself though was horrendous. It took over an hour and he left with a blend I could've done at home, a very uneven fringe and a long piece over his ear that showed no attention to detail. I decided to wait a week to see how it settled and it's gotten worse. Got charged $28 for this. The irony that the conversation while we were there was them talking all about how awful Supercuts is and this is what they let a customer leave with. Just a complete waste of tilt and money, which is a pity as some of these guys do great cuts but the guy who did this ham job should be avoided at all costs. read more

So first time here in Portsmouth and I'm staying here at the Sheraton so I walked down onto the Groomsmith. I walked in and made an appointment for the next day. I walked in the next day and I was seen within 5 minutes of my appointment time which was nice. Chris Silvers cut my hair. Young man but is meticulous and detailed oriented to his craft. He spent about 90 minutes with my haircut to give it the attention it needed. He did a really good job. He used several different techniques. Still a young barber and I felt it could've been faster but I won't rush his craft. The only thing I would say is that he didn't offer to shampoo my hair after but I also didn't see a rinse station? Only critique I have from him. Of the place itself I would say the seemed like they were going for the dapper type of place. Barber spa type. But I feel like they just missed the mark. They offer free beer and whiskey but it's not that expensive of beer or liquor. So I'm like eeeh. I've seen it in too many place. The decor is kind of bleh also. The Groomsmith can give one hell of a cut. Came to Portsmouth for my wedding and wasn't familiar with the local barber scene. My barber Jordan did a great job and had me looking dapper for the big day. He definitely took his time and made sure everything was perfect. Finished with a shave and I've never looked better! My God, I think Yelp Reviewer, Gabe C., needs to go back to San Diego to get his hair cut. Maybe he'll find a "more L.A. looking" barber shop, there. Fortunately, Portsmouth is not a suburb of San Diego or Los Angeles. In my opinion, The Groomsmith is amongst the best of the best barbers and barbers shops, MINUS a few demerits for not offering a shampoo, as an optional service. Zach and Reed have both cut my hair. Finding a good and consistent barber is hard enough. To step up your search and find someone and something even better is extremely difficult. Today difficult went to easy when I made an appointment at the Groomsmith. Zach was the gentleman that was scheduled to prove his professionalism with me today. Zach did exactly that. Walking in I was greeted by not only all three barbers but also by the customers in their chairs. The welcome was unexpected but very welcomed and appreciated. I then noticed the cleanliness of the entire establishment and proceeding to hang my coat on the coat rack which was easily accessible upon entry, to my right. After looking around to make sure I was correct when I first noticed how clean this shop was, I continued to my chair where Zach put his hand out, welcomed me and introduced himself. Solid handshake, looked me in the eyes and offered me the chair. He asked what I wanted for a cut. I told him, "a 2 on the sides and a trim on top, and if you have the time for a line up and neck shave. " Zach began and I refused to look in the mirror during the process. I have never had such an intricate and detailed cut in my life. He was very personable and professional. The haircut took about 35 minutes and when he was done I was totally surprised and never thought I would receive a haircut and lineup like that. I loved the experience and upon returning to work everyone one was asking where I went, and where is it? I'm glad I asked Zach for a handful of business cards before I left because I knew people would be asking where I had my hair cut and I wanted to be able to answer them correctly. This was the worst experience I have ever had getting my hair cut. I made an appointment online several days earlier for 1PM slot on Thursday, 12/5/19. I received text messages each day reminding me of my appointment. I arrived on the day a few minutes early and was told that the person who would be cutting my hair had another client and would only be another 10 minutes. That was fine with me as I know things don't always run exactly on time. 30 minutes later the prior client was still in the chair. I got up and told them I would re-schedule as I had another appointment to make. I was told it would only be another 5 minutes and that I should wait. When I finally sat in the chair, my cut was rushed and the minimum was done to get me out of the chair quickly because the stylist was now running very late. I left feeling as though my patronage was not appreciated. Worst of all I had pre-paid for the appointment as that was something the website recommends. I then went home and left a message on the feedback part of their website. 48 hours later and I have not received a response to my complaint. Needless to say I will never return there and will never again pre-pay for any service in the future. read more
