Unkind and Unprofessional. While looking for a new barber for son, I located Scuttlebutt and booked my son for a haircut with Kyle. Traveled from south Boston in over 2 hours of traffic / rain to pick my son up at school to bring him to this haircut. Called 10+ minutes prior to advise of small 5-10 minute delay. Took a run turn at toll plaza and advised barber what happened and advised we were arriving a bit later than expected and explained the series of unfortunate events. Kyle advised they had a "strict" 10 minute late policy. After explaining the circumstances, he said that he would ask the manager Rebecca to make an exception. He came back on the phone to tell us he could not do the haircut because he he "did not have enough time" as he had another haircut with another customer. No one else was available either. We would also be charged for the $45 haircut cost. Disappointed, I also explained to the manager Rebecca and she said she would charge us $45 even though we were not a no-show and did not cancel. I explained that we are literally outside the door and that we were coming in and would patiently wait for a cancellation or a no-show. This was at 4:20 pm. What happened next was flabbergasting. Upon arrival, Kyle was nowhere to be found. No one greeted us or noted that we would be on the waitlist. I spoke to another barber who told me he was well aware of our situation but he didn't know "where" Kyle was. He then went and asked the manager Rebecca "where" Kyle was, and she said "downstairs." We sat there for 40+ minutes. Kyle remained downstairs the entire time. He did not reappear until 5:03 pm for the next customer. We left and our credit card was charged for the $45 "haircut" we never received while Kyle sat downstairs for 40+ minutes. The sad thing is that we would've been extremely appreciative of Kyle cutting my son's hair, and given him a nice tip. We would've also provided a very nice review. But more importantly, we were looking for a new barber, and we would've gladly given this barbershop our business for the next four years for both of our sons while they attend school in the area. I have been going to Scuttlebutt for 5+ years now and had my haircut by several employees and it is always a great experience. Jake, Miki, and Nate are all excellent barbers and fun to talk with. Having moved to Portsmouth from Portland, I was in need of finding a barbershop that I could trust. I was urged to go to Scuttlebutt by some people who have been going there for quite some time, so I figured I would give it a go. First off, Scuttlebutt is conveniently located in town, and is super accessible. Their venue is fairly small, but they have kept it up. Particularly during Covid, they have taken every safety precaution to ensure that not only are patrons are safe, but also their staff. To this day, they take your temperature upon walking in to ensure of the safety of everyone. The space is always clean and professional. Since I always get skin fades, I went to Chris, who is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about his craft. The first time I went to him, I explained the haircut that I typically get and he surpassed my expectations. His attention to detail and his ability to craft a haircut based on what you want is what sets him and Scuttlebutt apart from other barbers. I love this place in downtown Portsmouth right across from the Fire Station. It's super accessible and there is nearby parking available. Nate the owner is a master barber and his love for his trade shows in the attention he pays top each customer. The place is a solid, old school vibe with (comfortable) barber chairs, with a modern hipster approach. They offer veteran, military, EMT, and police discounts, and if you are a regular you get a free cut every now and again. If you re hanging around there are large scene TV's, free drinks and coffee and some good chatter. They trim and shape my beard for me, and will put some of that great beard oil in too. They also offer a great range of grooming products so just make sure you check them out - we all need them! Right now they are open 7 days a week which is great for my schedule and more than other barbershops are providing. read more

I went to Portsmouth for a wedding, and saw this barber shop across the street from the house we were renting. I decided to treat myself to a straight razor shave and a haircut, and it was amazing, a very luxurious experience. Nate is a great guy and gave me the best haircut I've had in years. Nice place, new stations, good music, beer and coffee on request, pretty much fantastic experience. Biggest bummer for me is that 2,800 miles is too far to fly JUST for a haircut. read more
