For students membership is a mere £20 a month and for that you get on and off-peak access to the gym, beauty salon and bar. Other good deals can be had if you're a couple in which case monthly membership will cost you £23.75 each. Unfortunately neither membership includes access to squash courts (£4.50 off-peak/ £6 peak). You'll also have to pay a little extra to take part in any of the extra classes, which include boxercise, circuit training and spin classes. Both rooms of the gym are well stocked with every piece of apparatus you could ever need. The bonus for me is the small free-weights section that allows more space for machines, thus decreasing the amount of steroid-fuelled nutters you find in other gyms. Avoid evenings between 7-9pm, as these are the busiest times (I'd suggest visiting around midday during the week). If you need a few minutes to recuperate after your workout you can always chill out upstairs where the bar and kitchen will serve you everything from protein shakes to chilli con carne. All the staff are incredibly friendly and are often willing to give you free tips about how to improve your work out. It's no David Lloyd but for the money you can't complain.

For me it's the best value gym in Hove as it's impeccably maintained and well staffed. You'll never be far from a friendly trainer who'd be happy to give you some free exercise tips. The aerobic room is fully stocked with every machine you'd expect including treadmills, cross-trainers, bikes, spin machines and steppers, along with a matted area that comes with various exercise balls and crunch machines. Every wall is plastered with helpful diagrams and information so that you're never at a loss. The resistance room is separate to this and due to its bias toward machines as opposed to free-weights it isn't the kind of place frequented by many over-inflated steroid types. That said, the free-weight section is decent if a bit small and many of the machines are adaptable to varying needs. It's great for students as it's only £20 per month and if you're a couple you could get a joint membership for as little as £23.75. The squash courts cost £4.50 or £6 for off-peak and peak times respectively, however, the price isn't included in any membership package. Despite this I think it's the best value gym in the vicinity.

Max Strength offer group training sessions, so you get the benefit and knowledge of personal trainer without the crazy cost! Groups are still pretty small, and you get quite a good team spirit going after a few sessions together. They offer both outdoor and indoor boot camp sessions, along with strength training. The guys know what they are doing, so after a mere 40 minutes I get a much better workout than pounding the machines at the gym for hours and not really knowing what to do! I feel stronger, I have lots more energy and I'm leaner to the tune of almost two dress sizes. The sun always seems to shine on our Saturday morning boot camps, and working out in the open air is lovely!

St Ann's Well Gardens is an attractive and traditional park bounded by Somerhill Road, Nizells Road…read moreand Furze Hill in Hove. There are entrances to the park from each road. Opened in 1908, the compact gardens have something for everyone: There's a wild woodland area, popular with dog walkers and wildlife enthusiasts, with different species of trees, birdlife and squirrels; two play areas for children (one for toddlers); a small pond; 8 tennis courts and a bowling green; an accessible sheltered 'sensory garden' with lots of scented plants, plenty of seats and a handrail around the perimeter; traditional lawns and flower beds; and a cafe, open 9-16.30h (depending on the weather - ring ahead on (01273) 735 187). Tennis courts can be booked on (01273) 292704 or online via the web-site. The gardens are named after a 'Chalybeate' (iron bearing) spring, famous for its health-giving waters. The well is supposedly known from Saxon times, although the dedication to Ann may reflect the popularity of dedicating wells to her after the return of Crusaders from the Holy Land from 1150 onwards. The iron-rich waters - which emerged with some force - were recommended as a tonic by Dr Richard Russell (1687-1759) and by Mrs Fitzherbert (1756-1837), the friend of the Prince regent, later George IV. Around 1800 an imposing pump room was built over the spring to accommodate the substantial number of visitors who came to 'take the waters'. Towards the end of the 19th century, artesian wells sunk locally meant that the flow of the waters had considerably declined and the enterprise closed. The Pump House on the site was demolished in 1935, and a small 'Wishing Well' now marks the spot. A small (and rather unreliable) spring now feeds a stream through the park. The gardens are busy all year round with families and dog owners, and especially so in summer. They were awarded a Green Flag in 2006 for their quality and the Council's commitment to nature conservation on the site. It's a favourite spot for mine for a walk, fresh air and a cup of coffee!

The playground area is one of the best around with tonnes of things to keep the kids busy for atleast a couple of hours. The park itself is kept well and surrounded by trees which encloses it slightly. This place is perfect if you want to get out of the office and have a bit of lunch and get into the sunshine which I have done on numerous occasions in the past. The tennis courts offer those who can't stay still, a chance to burn off all that energy.

It is much more compact park than Preston Park down the road and works perfectly for families and young kids. The whole park is on a slope which makes it a little more difficult for portable barbecues but great for rolling down the hill! As you walk down the grassy slope from Stanford Avenue you reach a lovely red brick clock tower and a small cafe stand (great coffee, GREAT cakes!) and two tennis courts in excellent condition (free before 10am). Next to the tennis courts is a small playground for young kids with a sandpit, slide and various climbing frames- as well as some picnic tables for parents. Grab a coffee and watch your kids burn off their energy!

The hotel desk staff told us they were sorry but only had one unit. We asked to speak with the manager but never heard from anyone in management. We stayed four nights and couldn't sleep due to the heat of the rooms. The windows only open a crack for safety reasons. I would not recommend this hotel from June through October due to no ability to make the room comfortable. For a luxury hotel with high prices, it is disappointing that no one made an effort to make us comfortable in any way and didn't even make an effort to speak with us. Can't recommend this hotel at all.

Luckily I had my mobile phone with me to check my email account. The pin activated some 10 minutes after I had completed the registration so I had to wait trying to unlock the door for a few minutes until I finally was allowed in. The gym itself has a lot of cardio and strength machines, all brand new. But the only one available for back extension was out of order. If you are used to train with dumbells and barebells like I am then you might find this gym a bit disappointing. There are only two barebells available plus one smith machine. The floor is made rubber so it's not stable when you squat or power clean. There is a reasonable number of dumbbells but I guess that there might not be enough at rush hours.

The Gym itself is very clean, bright and spacious, there's plenty of cardio equipment and a good amount of floor space. The free weights area is modest in size and it can be very difficult to get a look in at the busiest parts of the day (early to late evening) there's a decent amount of equipment but it's missing a few machines that gyms may look at as luxuries (I long for a supported HLR rack) so it's fairly basic, but with some knowledge you can improvise and use what's there, and with that being said, for the price and location it's a steal.

The only reason I chose this over any other was closeness to home and ease of access; beyond that, it is comparable to any other gym, if a little smaller. Otium is the in-house gym for the Thistle Hotel: as such, it is kept in excellent condition. Although it is generally quite small, with a lot of machines crammed in, they all work and are kept in good nick. That being said, I've stopped going at peak times (lunchtimes, after 5) because you often don't get to use the machines you want, or have to wait for a little while. Apart from all of the machinery, Otium has a good selection of weights, gym balls and other paraphenalia: anything the gym novice may need. Not being that knowledgeable about gym machinery, I don't know if they have anything for the true enthusiast; although judging by the general size of the gym, I'd doubt it. That being said, the pool and sauna section next door is excellent: well looked after, pleasantly designed, and more than large enough for the gym itself. It never seems that busy either... a nice alternative to the always busy pools around town. So, a generally nice gym, well-looked after and run, if a little small. It's about the same price as any other gym; it was slightly cheaper when I joined than the other Brighton gym behemoths, but I reckon that was probably a special offer. I'd recommend it for locals, but not worth going out of your way for.
