Pros: Unbeatable price, lots of machines, 24 hours, never crowded. Cons: Extremely dirty, the owner posts up articles insulting everyone who believes in God or supports republicans. Makes people feel extremely alienated. I don't know why he wants to insult his members. I would think he would be more inclusive. I had a friend who left the gym for this reason. Didn't want to give money to someone who was constantly trying to insult them. Overall, I recommend the gym if your looking for a reasonably priced place to workout and don't mind a gym that hasn't been cleaned in years or being insulted if you don't have the exact same opinions as the owner. The best part is half of the "insults" he posts do not even make any sense..... If the place was cleaned regularly and if the owner realized his business model isn't based on his personal beliefs it'd be a really great gym. read more

I cancelled my membership because I felt very uncomfortable going into the gym when the owner was there. The owner was an egotistical jerk, rude, attitudinal, answerd your question as if you were bothersome, watched ever move you make which made my workout experience so uncomfortable. I brought my trainer in one day and he was very upset with the owner approach, I tried to defend him but he stated that he's had over 10 memberships at many gyms and never encounterd a douchebag like him. Therefore I apologized for his behavior. Keep in mind his $30 special has been available for over 4yrs and theres a reason for that. Join at your own risk. read more

I joined The Gym to start Judo classes, which are offered at a VERY reasonable fee, two classes per week. I like my classmates and sensei, and feel like I've learned quite a bit in the last couple of months here. The place is clean and offers a multitude of free weights, machines, treadmills, etc that any other gym would offer. For members, it has after hours access. Two unique features: a sports climbing wall treadmill and a large, suspended sprung martial arts mat, which VERY helpful for not hurting yourself after you get thrown. In comparison, to the few other local martial arts locations I have been to, none have had this impressive feature. When I go, later in the evening, it is not crowded. For the cost, it's ten times better than any Planet Fitness and the vibe here is totally chill, everyone just doing their own thing. In regards to the memberships, it's a direct draw from a bank account. While the direct draw from the bank account is not the best arrangement, the owner assured me that I can cancel at anytime, given that I send a simple letter stating my cancellation for his records. I am glad to support this is a locally owned business. In regards to the owner: I have never been offended or treated with anything but respect from him. read more

Super shiesty. Makes it very inconvenient to cancel. I went to cancel a membership that I have been paying on for over a year that my son hasn't gone. He refused to cancel it while I was there, in person. Said I have to mail in a cancellation letter (via regular mail, no email) and it would be cancelled 60 days after it is "postmarked". So I'll be charged for 2 more months. You're welcome for all the free money. read more

Terrible. Owner is super shady. Does not invest in his "gym". Old equipment. If you want to cancel, you have to mail in a cancelation letter and then your membership will be cancelled 60 days after postmark. We asked to see a copy of our contract, and we had to sign up online through a different company just to obtain that. The owner is now trying to make us pay for the yearly fee per person that every member pays on April 15th. Our postmark was on Feb 10th, so our last day should be April 10th. We looked over our contract and it does not state anything about paying the annual fee when canceling. Owners response, "It's just how it's done." So shady! We're in the middle of fighting this and will proceed forward to court if needed. This is now just about the principle of the matter. Shady! Shady! Shady! DO NOT GO HERE!!!! Similar experience as expressed in post from 2016. The price for the gym is cheap but you get what you pay for. When you sign up, you rec'd no copy of a contract or receipt. Only payment accepted is automated withdrawal from a checking account which they set up. When, I contacted gym about cancelling membership was told to write a letter and mail it and the membership would be cancelled in 60 days. I wrote 2 letters cancelling membership but 6 months later, the gym was still withdrawing $ from my checking account. I had to contact my bank to get it resolved. There is a lot of weight equipment & music plays but there is no TVs and place looks disorganized and needs a cleaning. I went to workout at 10 pm at night and the back door to place was wide open - so much for security (esp being a female) & needs a badge to get it. read more

Was a member for a very short while. Great prices for a membership, but there is a reason the prices are so low. This place is extremely dirty. I don't think it's been cleaned for years. The equipment is very old and when you are done lifting, your hands smell like dirty metal. Attending this gym, as a Christian or conservative, you will feel uncomfortable as the ownership seems to insult anything Christian or politically conservative. The most recent ad I got in the mail reads "What's it worth to belong to a no-nonsense gym with an open and friendly atmosphere?". Yet at the bottom of the ad it makes it a point to state that The Gym is a "Fox News free environment". How is it open and friendly when you are advertising that conservative points of view are frowned upon. What does it even matter what anyone's political views are. People just want to work out. The owner wear shirts that openly criticize the Christian faith as well. Everyone has a right to express their beliefs, even a private business. If you choose to spend your money at this establishment, that is your choice. More power to ya. This is probably why the prices are so low at this place; between the filthy environment and equipment and the ownership's lack of tolerance for anyone who differs from their narrow world view, the only way to attract members is to offer the membership for next to nothing. read more

I've been going to The Gym for years. The things I like about The Gym Great Value - $ 29 a month, deducted from my checking, can also be deducted from a credit card. Straight forward pricing, no hassles or pressure Friendly Staff - We go at our lunch time and the owner is always there and knows us by name. Great hours - open all the time. Lots of equipment - They have all the basics that I need - free weights, machines, treadmills, eliptical, stair climber, etc. They also have a climbing wall machine. Never crowded, usually just the regulars when I'm there. The Gym is not fancy. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the appearance/cleanliness could be a bit improved. However, for people who are wanting to get in and out and get a good workout at a good price, I would highly recommend The Gym. read more

I just joined this gym the other day. My reasons: price, location, and frills. Out of the 4 gyms in my area, this one was the cheapest. $29.99 per month and they deduct it out of your bank account on a monthly basis. No contracts and just a 30 day notice to cancel. It's located in a strip mall that is easily accessible from Lapeer Rd. They do offer every machine I have ever seen at a gym, maybe not 20 of each but enough for me to use. They also have tanning and a sauna. I know they do a lot of martial arts training there (not interested in that), but it's there if you need it. It's 24 hours, which is great and you just flash your key card to get in. Even though the staff isn't always there, the owner assured me that he has security cameras placed all over and he watches everything that goes on from home. The place isn't all that new inside and is not as flashy as the bigger, newer gyms, but that doesn't concern me one bit. It's all about staying in shape. I highly recommend. read more

I have tried closing my account FOUR times. First time, I went directly into the gym and was told I had to mail in a letter to close the membership. I have now mailed three different letters and am still being charged monthly. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I joined "The Gym of Lake Orion" 7 months ago. Due to life changes, I had to cancel my membership. I have been given the worst run around. I've called 3 times, gone in twice and written a letter. They still will not allow me to cancel and have sent me to collections. This place is awful! read more

I have been trying to cancel my membership for over a year. The owners are even neighbors of my parents and they continue to not help me or cancel my membership as requested. I have submitted a complaint to the BBB and they responded that I must be mentally ill, and that I am screwing with them. Not a place you want to do business with at all! read more

Please save your money and DO NOT go here. Rich is an unprofessional jerk. He knows nothing about strength or physical fitness and he makes up stupid rules just because he is jealous of those that are more successful than he is. He has told me, and several other members that believing in God is ignorant. Personally, I believe religious views should stay away from work environments. I've witnessed him yelling at people and telling them the way they are exercising is stupid. He has told people not to help others in the gym because they "don't know what they are talking about." I think he just wants everybody to go to him for advice and give him money for personal training. That's just a shame because I have never seen proof that he is certified, and even if he is, he really does not know his stuff. The place is dirty, the equipment is at least 15 years old and always broken, and Rich just sits in his chair doing nothing all day and just leaves the place dusty, until his wife comes in now and then to clean up when she can. Yeah the deal is cheap. $29.99 per month and an extra penny to add an extra person so it is technically $15 per person. The price is $9 for high school students, and their rate is locked in past graduation, so Rich seems to make his money off of broke high school and college kids because they cannot afford to go elsewhere. But here's the kicker: there is technically no end date to the contract because it goes month to month, so Rich found this loophole so he can require 60 day notice instead of 30 day notice for the open ended contract, just so he can get an extra month worth of money. He also e-mailed me personally after I had not been there for a week and told me to come in so he could yell at me for not providing a welcoming environment in the area that I normally work out. I also was "making too much noise"-- What is this, Planet Fitness? After this, and after him telling my friend that he is stupid and isn't allowed to help other work on their technique, I was done. I will never come here again, and I will make sure to tell everybody I can not to waste their time or money. It took me some time to find another gym for a similar price, and I will be sad to not see some of the people there anymore, but I could not stand how Rich treated me and everybody else like idiots. There are so many more things that I have not mentioned, but just save your money and literally go ANYWHERE else. read more

The "GYM" in Lake Orion MI - I just have a complaint about the owner and NO Customer service what so ever! The owner has no personalitly when it comes to customers. I was told to send in my cancellation letter 30 days prior to when I would like to cancel even though on his website he advertises "The Gym is now offering a special promotion for membership at $29.99 a month, with no contract, and no initiation fee." When I received phone calls from his billing company I was shocked to find out I was charged for another month after I cancelled. Then was told until my account was current I would be charged for each additional month and once I was paid up I had to give another 30 day notice. When I spoke to the owner he was not helpful but rude. He talks over you and changes his story from husband to wife! Yes it's also hot in there. As a business owner you would think that customers come first wether they are coming or leaving. Unfortunetly at the GYM the owner comes 1st. read more
