As, I suspected, it very much looks like an old school diner and so immediately I want pancakes rather than lunch! Pancakes I had, stacked up high with a sausage on the side for 'real food.' The boyfriends had a burger and all is very satisfying, including the lovely homely service. We never got around to coffee as milkshakes and orange juice seemed more appropriate! Worth a detour for this place! Note: check if they take cards - they didn't last month!

Beautifully decorated with biker memorabilia, it used to be a car dealership, then a service station before its present incarnation. A small but tasty menu from which I ordered the full Cumbrian breakfast - bacon, Cumberland sausage, blood sausage, mushrooms, baked beans, fried egg, hash browns and grilled tomatoes. Sounds like a lot but it was really tasty, not to mention great fuel for hiking up the mountains in the district. Do yourself a favor and tank up at this family run American-style diner. You'll thank yourself after.

The other diners as well, most of them were walkers and a few even had dogs with them! It's a great place to have a pint and strike up a conversation with a stranger. We had a relaxed dinner here on a Monday evening. Their basic pub food options are pretty affordable, but anything with red meat or fish resulted in quite a significant price jump. They had a long list of specials, but I chose off the main menu - the steamed fillet of salmon stuffed with spinach, and served with a onion, tomato, basil, and prawn salsa with a side of linguine pasta. While everything certainly tasted fresh and well-cooked, there wasn't really a lot of flavor to the dish. I was admittedly a bit confused about the "salsa" as it was really like a prawn salad and I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be eaten with the salmon or as a side dish, rather an unusual condiment! A tasty dish, but lacking in inspiration. We had a few desserts as well, I remember in particular enjoying the raspberry cheesecake, but the overall impression was still that there wasn't a lot of creativity in the kitchen, especially for the cost. Still, they have a lovely atmosphere, and it's very pleasant to spend an evening there. I just think what comes out of the kitchen is fairly average, which is fine as it's just a pub, but those who are looking for a really special meal may not find it here - although the truly wonderful staff makes it worth a visit anyway.

We ate in the bar/restaurant both nights for dinner and in the dining room for breakfast and hung out a little in the bar. Three things: 1) Thanks for understanding food allergies and having gluten-free bread - amazing! 2) Please thank the gentleman on the second bar stool from the right for recommending a trip to the distillery on Bassenthwaite, he got that right (even though he'd never been there himself!) 3) Thank you (publicity shy) Gill, for being so great and even providing us with a candlelit breakfast when lightning took out the power on the day we left. You rock. OK, four things: 4) We ate in the pub on our second (and last) night because the first night was so good! Brunch, lunch, dinner, and bar snacks are served at the Drunken Duck, and I'd only really recommend booking for dinner. The beer and cider are mostly local I believe. We did the curry bowl to share (vegetarian and VERY tasty - kind of wish I could get the recipe), scampi, fries, and tartare sauce (those fries are to die for!) and the lamb kofta, hummus, flatbread, and mint yoghurt (great for sharing and noshing). There's plenty of parking on the side of the inn. The inside is decorated beautifully (very insta-worthy), so maybe consider renting out for an event. And yes, you can bring your dog to dinner/drinks.

It started almost immediately when we came to order. We asked for another five minutes to read through the menu and after the time had passed we waited, and waited and continued to wait. Dispite trying to get the waitresses attention again and again. Eventually, just before we were about to leave, we did get seen by a different member of staff who took our food order and drinks. When the drinks arrived we had been missing milk from our tea for two so we tried to get the waitresses attention, at first we thought she would come and check to see if everything was alright and bring us the milk for our teas. She even passed us several times dealing with people on tables around us and we kept asking for her and trying to get her attention and eventually I had to go to the bar with all the staff "hanging around the bar" to ask for some milk to now add to our now lukewarm teas. When the food arrived, most the chips fell off from my daughters meal onto the table and my wife's cutlery was thrown on the floor. The waiter just said it wasn't his day and went to get a new knife while we scooped up the chips off the table to put onto her plate. On my own meal the ribs were really nice however the chicken was pink inside and not cooked properly and the plate was covered in grease. We tried to make the most of the meal but the overall attitude of the staff seemed to hang over our meal and my daughter has a disability and felt self conscious about the staff waiting at the bar looking over and talking. Although she didn't know that the conversation was about her it didn't stop her feeling like it. Overall I couldn't recommend this restaurant to anybody and it is a real shame because I believe with decent staff that cared about their customers this would have been a completely different story.
