I honestly don't think I can sing the praises of this place enough, but darn it if I'm not going to try. Some friends, my partner and I were up in Edinburgh for a few days before - and on the way to - the BrewDog AGM in Aberdeen. The entire extended weekend was a pilgrimage to all things craft beer, and when we realised that a reportedly "exceptional" craft beer place was a short walk from where we were staying... well, we were off. The venue itself is not too brightly lit, with a bit of a quirky vibe about it. There's lot of natural look tables, we were sat on what looked like an old church pew at one point, random beer-themed art adorned the walls... It was cool. Beer-wise there was a cracking range of brews on tap as well as bottled in the fridge, but if I'm honest one of the main draws was their own range. Oh yes, The Hanging Bat Beer Cafe sells the - in my experience - excellent produce of The Hanging Bat Brew Co. I tried two of their sours which were on at the time: "Death by Blackberries", and a no-hops, no-fruit beer "Funk Wizard". I gave them a 5 and a 4, out of 5, respectively on a popular app for those with a problem... remembering their favourites. ;) All in all, I had a great time at the Hanging Bat both nights we went in. I walked in here during the middle of a weekday by myself to grab a quick pint and a bit of lunch. There were a few people having drinks, but it was not busy, which I understand this place can get. I ordered a cider, but was convinced by the bartender to order a craft beer instead and recommended a couple of sours which he poured for me to try. Both were good and I appreciated him suggesting them. I had a chili dog and some wedges, which was decent for bar food, but I would have preferred fries or chips. I suggested this place to my husband and his co-workers for their after work drinks, and they already knew about it and can't believe I actually liked it, so I'm going to add their local after-work crowd perspective to this place and do remember we are in Scotland. They don't serve pints, they serve schooners, which is not an issue for me but I guess could be an issue for some. There are a bunch of 'wankers' in the place tasting every beer on the menu before ordering, and I suppose this would be frustrating if it's busy and all you want are six pints of lager. My conclusion, this place is great is you like craft beer (or gin - they have a huge selection), but not if all you want are six pints after work. Note that their perspectives did not impact the number of stars I gave this place, and I would go back with the 'right' people. read more

When we first looked up this place and we saw they did hot dogs, first we were a bit apprehensive, but heard the ambience was nice and decided to give it a try. The bartenders were super nice, we were helped by a man named Loki (which is awesome by itself). He answered all of our questions about the beer and was very friendly. In the whole time of being in the U.K., I would say this place delivered our food in the best time. Probably only about 10-15 minutes after ordering. We ordered the chorizo mac and cheese, chihuahua hot dog, and the pulled pork hot dog. Let me tell you, these hot dogs were DELICIOUS. Served on pretzel buns, the toppings were overFLOWING off the tops. They had also run out of their pickle side item, and promptly refunded me. I saw this beer cafe was recommended on Yelp, but my Airbnb host's exuberance for the spot propelled me to actually visit when all I wanted to do was go to sleep early. It was a Sunday evening a couple weeks ago. I walked in, easily found a bar seat, and ordered a flight. I didn't realize the samplers were so large -- full-size beers -- which made the flight hard to finish. Especially because you only get one glass at a time as part of a token system. When you're ready for the next sample, you hand a bartender your token. There were some lags between drinks. I'd prefer to just have the whole flight at once so I can compare the different flavor notes. I understand why they do the token system but I also think it's outdated at this point. The Hanging Bat has a cool, slightly grungy but cozy vibe. It's not crazy loud but it's not quiet either. The bathrooms are clean. Their food looked pretty good as well but I didn't eat anything. Overall, it's a nice place to visit if you're in Edinburgh and enjoy local (UK) beer. read more

We had to come here, if for nothing else, the name was cute enough for us to check out. Beer selection was good and the beers we had were tasty and enjoyable. I recall at least 12-15 taps but there could have been more. The inside bar area was nice seating at the bar and plenty of seating about the area plus seating downstairs. Place was clean, bartenders friendly and inside had a funky bat theme on walls and other places. Cool place, good vibes! We didn't order food but saw they had a food menu and plates coming out looked good. Beer prices reasonable for the area and smaller than pint serving sizes available. I hate to leave bad reviews, but this place is not where you want to go for a meal. Let's start with the good: cold beer, great selection of draft taps and barrel beer, and a good location and decor. Now the bad: the food was sub par at best. The bbq chicken sandwich was so tough that we couldn't finish it, and the steak sandwich was the same, but without the benefit of the bbq sauce to cover up the blandness. Nice bar in Edinburgh! This is definitely a craft beer bar. There weren't too many beers from Scotland but there were plenty from the UK and Europe. I had an interesting sour beer with tzatziki. It was a delicious sour and was very drinkable and not overly sour. The space itself is really cool. It's a mix of modern and traditional. There is the main bar area as well as both a lower and upper seating area. There is a lot of exposed brick throughout and wooden tables. Probably the best pub I have visited in Edinburgh. Not a huge statement as I have not been to that many, but of the ones I have tried this is my favourite. The inside is more like a craft beer bar you would find in Copenhagen than Edinburgh. Lots of wood and cool pictures, it's got an atmosphere that exudes "beer cool" (made up term, but you hopefully get what I mean) and just seems to fit with the fact it has around 20 beers taps on offer. The beers I had all tasted great and the staff were really great about letting us try samples to find the ones we liked best. The only small small complaint I can mention was I had a hot dog and it tasted ok, but was nothing special. There was certainly nothing 'gourmet' about it. They need to add a bit extra to their food menu in my opinion as currently it does not meet up with the high level of beer on offer. Great beer place to have a pint and if it was in Glasgow I would visit every week. One of the joys of being back in Edinburgh is discovering wonderful new bars and restaurants outside the Glasgow bubble. As much as I love Glasgow and all it has to offer, I wish it had a Hanging Bat. My friend Ailsa introduced me to this place, selling it purely on the fact that it did craft beers and great food. Located on Lothian Road, the exterior is very nondescript and we took a few minutes to spot it. Once inside however, it was clear this place was quite special. There are about four different levels, a balcony area, two lower levels and the main bar area. Each part is full of leather sofas, brick walls and wooden tables and chairs. In certain areas of the bar were brewing and fermentation rooms behind a glass window for customers to peer into. It just looks good. Sam was immediately mesmerized by the range of beer listed on the blackboard above the bar and quickly decided he wanted a flight. Most craft brewing places will offer this, a taster of 4-5 beers from the board for a set price. In this case, it was 5 beers for £11.95, each beer coming in thirds of a pint. Rather than give you all 5 beers at once like a lot of places do, you are given 5 bottle caps with the Hanging Bat logo, once you've finished your first beer, you come and get your second so that each one is freshly poured and cool. The first one Sam went for was a 12% triple IPA with a 'mango finish' called The Tickle Monster - weird, right? I'm not a big beer drinker myself but this one, despite its strength, was delicious and you could taste and smell that hint of mango. Moving onto the food, we sat down at one of the lower levels with the menus. The extensive beer menu is followed by a drool inducing food menu, which you can take a look at here. One of the things that both Sam and I loved was the fact that all of the Meatloaf burgers were named after songs by the man himself. I ended up going for the Dog of the Day from the specials board, which was topped with pulled pork and cheese. We also ordered a side of smokey beans, a range of beans in a smokey tomato sauce with chorizo. You go to the bar to order and are given your table number which comes in the form of a glass bottle of water with a number on it, as well as lots of information about The Hanging Bat, like the fact that groups can come in and brew their own beer. Another little detail I just loved about the whole experience. When my food arrived I was already in love with the school dinner theme. Brought to you on a metal tray, the hot dog in a little cardboard coffin and classic bottles of ketchup and mustard. The appearance for me was great. Our side, the beans, as you can see, came in a little white tub and were full of smokey flavour, although we only found two chunks of chorizo among the beans, which we were a little disappointed by. The hot dog itself was exactly how I wanted it to be: smokey, slightly sweet and perfectly matched with that mound of pulled pork and grated cheese. Sam had gone for the meatloaf burger of the day, which was also topped with pulled pork. I had a taste and enjoyed it, but because the burger is actually meatloaf as opposed to a big, juicy burger, it is a little on the dry side for me, and I was glad I stuck to my delicious hot dog! In one trip I fell in love with The Hanging Bat. The decor, the food, the staff, the drinks. It's the exact kind of place that, even though I'm not a big beer drinker, I just love. This will certainly become a regular spot when I visit Edinburgh! read more

*Claps* This place is a new and exciting pub concept.. which is AWESOME! You won't find any of your regular tennants-like beers here, and you won't find any pints either! A risky idea in Scotland! Well... Brauhaus has a major competition now, this place has a MASSIVE beer/ spirits list, and they encourage people to try new beers. How? Well all beers are served in 1/3 pints or 2/3 pints. This way, you can try lots of different ones. I had a couple. One was a pumpkin beer, another one was something along the lines of clown-beer-something. Both were lovely! They also have a deal where, for 10 pounds, you get 5 tokens for 5 1/3 pints as long as they are (7%?) and under. PLUS you get to keep a Hanging Bat branded glass. Saweet! Also worth mentioning the design = awesome (They have these cool brewing areas!), the staff = wicked friendly, The bathrooms = CLEAN AND COOL! (diggin' the beer taps as the water taps!) Cannot wait to come back and try the food. Rumour is that the Hot Dogs are fantastic. (Will get back to you on that one!!) So I'm kind of thinking that the Hanging Bat is my new favourite place, my BFF and the bartenders are buddies for life! The only problem is that it's in Edinburgh and I live in Manchester - damn it! In a nutshell you're talking about a pretty damn cool venue that's very chilled and feels like a natural place to hang out in the day to work, chat over coffee and on the other hand an evening joint which is all about drinking fantastic craft beer from all across the world. It also helps that they serve sweet sweet food with the emphasis on 'gourmet junk food' - between our party we had the 2lb nachos (awesssome!), the taco dog and for moi, the mac n cheese - fantastico (and all very reasonably priced for the size of the portions at sub £10) The beer though is what it's all about and I love the selection from the boards which do an amazingly good value 5 thirds of all tap beer for 11.50 - this blew me away and there was so much good beer to be had - even in this visit I had beers from Beavertown, Thornbridge and let my beery thoughts gravitate over to some untried breweries that were all excellent. I've been here twice now. I'm a fan. I'm from Toronto and we do hot dogs. On every street corner. It's called street meat. When I heard that the Hanging Bat cafe did hot dogs I was very excited. I'd soon be able to have my hot dog fix essentially whenever I wanted (and being located near by boyfriend's flat helps). I had the chilli cheese dog, mac and cheese, and scotch egg. Seems like an odd assortment of pub grub but I think it works well. I love mac and cheese and it's good here. The chilli cheese dog was delicious and it was on a crusty baguette type bun. I also think it's priced valuably at £4.50! Now on to the beer. You can read below at how the beer is served (not pints but in 2/3 glasses). I think this is interesting and nice because it allows you to try a variety of beers that are probably not served around in other bars in Edinburgh. I like how the bar is set up. Quite a funky place. Rustic feeling but also slightly edgy. I like the range of beers / ales / bitter by the 1/3rd of a pint. Also nice to sample the drinks before committing to a glass. There are a couple of cellars that you can view through windows to see the beer barrels which is a nice touch. The food looked good, will need to come back here and try some. read more

Absolutely recommend this place if you're looking for some craft beer - they have a nice variety including sours. It's a unique place with a home feel with couches, upstairs and downstairs area. We also tried the sweet potato fries and BBQ wings and they were DELICIOUS. The staff was attentive, kind and friendly. Oh how I love this place! It was the first pub I came across in Edinburgh really, thanks Yelp!, and I try and get back often. The beer, the gin... if those are your things then you absolutely have to try coming here, it's criminal not to. There's always a huge rotation of beers on draft, and they have bottled beers as well... I think I've only come across one beer that I haven't loved, and I've gone through a huge list in my short time here... I don't even order a particular type, I just let the (friendly) staff pick something for me. The gins are equally as good, but the beer selection here is so good I go with beer more often than gin... and I love gin. The food is pretty dang good too! Yes hot dogs are the cool thing now, but they do them well, and they have more adventurous options that rotate through as well... the mac and cheese is a good staple as well, and the smokey wings aren't half bad either... I think they're supposed to be the "spicy" option, but they are definitely their own take which I appreciate... I would rather have something like this than "buffalo" wings that aren't done right, so they get points for going their own way. The place itself is cool and cozy... a really good mix between somewhere modern and an older pub, I wouldn't mind seeing more like this... there is also a cute, but small(ish) beer garden out back now, but it's more for smokers than hanging out. The only thing I don't love about the place is that it can get slammed off and on... but that's no fault of their own, when you have that type of beer selection at decent prices I would expect it to get busy, so is the way of life. Still a great place to go with a few friends if you can grab a table, and a good place to drop in alone after the post work crowd dissipates, but sadly it's not usually a place to run into locals and/or strike up conversations with a stranger... the staff are really cool though, so that certainly helps. I personally don't find the prices here bad at all, but I have hear some people say it seemed on the higher side given a lot of the beers are served in sub pint portions based on strength, etc., but I find the prices to be proportional really... if anything I'm normally pleasantly surprised by the end tally. They do have a few non beer and gin options if you're dragging along someone that isn't into either, but if you or a friend are into craft beers and/or gin you really owe it to yourself to give this place a go. read more

I absolutely loved this place. We went for lunch and had virtually the whole place to ourselves. The space itself is great and has a handful of 'old' plush leather couches/chairs that are quite comfortable and good for conversation. It might have been because it was so slow, but my gal and I stayed for awhile and played cards and the barkeep did not seem as though he minded at all. Of course the beer war good, but as for the food, I cannot recommend the Greyfriar's Dog enough. It is a delicious hotdog topped with delicious Haggis...can anything be more right!? Also, if you are in Edinburgh for a couple of days and are looking to get away from all of the Old/New Town bustle, I think this might be a great choice. It is walking distance from where you probably are staying, but in what seemed to be more of the business district for actual Edinburgh locals. That being said, I would not be surprised if it gets crowded at night. Either way, quiet lunch or exciting dinner, are probably both fun options as long as you get the hotdog topped with Haggis. read more

Lots of familiar craft beer favourites on tap like Wild Beer Co, Magic Rock, Buxton, Siren - the Beyond Modus was superb; aged for another three months in a red wine barrel. It's an amazing place for a beer lover. Or gin lovers. Or for people that want somewhere that's not a generic chain pub. Or people that want to have a sit down and chat with friends. Or people that want something nice to eat. Or just people. Anybody. Everybody. ALL THE PEOPLE! It's got a great atmosphere, in no part to having absolutely zero pretentions of being anything other than a great place to hang out and sample something a little different. The keg, cask and craft beer list changes regularly and the list of gins is longer than your arm (and folks, I have exceptionally long monkey style arms) if that's your thing. The staff know their stuff, and happily answer any questions you have. Don't ask why the glasses are only 2/3rds of a pint, I heard that question a million and one times, though. It's to preserve the quality of your beer so that it's still fresh when you get to the bottom of the glass. So there. Seriously, though. Go and give it a try, I promise you that you'll not find anywhere else like it in Edinburgh. It's a great, great place. And we are buds, right? RIGHT??? read more

I was really only here for the food, namely this hotdog topped with haggis. The girl was nice enough to rush my order in, since we arrived when the kitchen was closing off. We got the 2lb nachos, which were delicious, meaty and doused with some spicy salsa and lots of guacamole. Yum! My haggis dog wasn't that impressive. The haggis itself, I guess was alright - my first taster, nothing to write home about. And take it how you will, I thought the wiener was too stiff and a bit dry for my liking. The bacon mac and cheese was hot and filling, a good side to snack on. This place was a bit of a miss for me on the hotdog unfortunately, but I can definitely vouch for the other sides. read more

The Hanging Bat is touted as being one of Edinburgh's craft beer havens, and one of the go-to pubs for craft beer. They have an impressive board of continually-changing beers on cask and keg, working with some amazing craft brewers and having a brilliant selection. The staff are usually very knowledgeable about all their beers and can tell you a lot about the beers. Their beers come in 2/3 pint servings generally, and because they are craft beers of really high quality you'll have some delicious beers but pay a bit more than elsewhere. I would normally have given the Hanging Bat four stars, but my last experience there was disappointing. I was out with colleagues on on Friday night and one colleague ordered a beer he had picked at random with a red label that was front and center on the top shelf of one of the fridges behind the bar. The server brought it over and opened it and, after ringing it up, she asked if he had known how much it was... It was the £25 Tsar Bomba. The staff should have been properly trained to know all about their high-end beers. At the very least the server should have realized that people don't order Buxton Brewery's Tsar Bomba often, and that there was a reason for that! The server should have warned my colleague ahead of time that this was an unusually expensive beer. It was a really unfortunate experience and, because of what happened and how the Hanging Bat dealt with the situation, decreased my perception of it. I still love their beers on tap (which are clearly priced on the board) but know what you're ordering before ordering bottles since you don't know if the staff will alert you if you order something unusually expensive, and also one that ended up being a terrible beer. read more

Well if you're a regular helper, there's no way you can come to Edinburgh and not want to visit T.H.B.B.C. It's been on my list of places to visit for some time now, but I'm not usually down this end of time, so haven't had the chance...until now. The pictures on yelp do not give the same impression that you get when walking inside. It's a lot less "down and dirty", a lot lighter, and a lot bigger than I thought it'd be, with a darker seating area, in a basement section, and extra seating upstairs also. We ordered our food and I decided to try and find a beer to drink (I don't usually like beer). The staff were amazingly helpful and don't make me feel inferior for not being a craft beer expert, and gave me a few samples of beers to try. I found one I liked and my boyfriend also managed to sift through the enormous menu and find a Weiss beer to enjoy whilst we waited for our food. The grub arrived in no time at all, and we shared some ribs to start with. They were amazing. Sticky, sweet and soft meat that fell off the bone. We also had Mac and cheese as sides, and it was creamy heaven in little pots. The hot dogs were good, but the crusty buns put me off a little, and they ended up being the least enjoyable part of the meal surprisingly. Overall the food was a lot better than I imagined, the staff were amazing, the beer selection was incomparable, and I loved the little touch of hair bobbles, body spray and "lady products" available for free in the ladies bathroom. Little things like that, show that they care about the customers, not just the custom. As good as everybody says! read more

It is a busy bar on a friday evening just after work..duh! But I see why I want to visit again. Honest beer and food. This is an excellent place to try out on Lothian Road. I had meaning to come for a while, and reading some excellent reviews spurred me to finally give it a go. The place is very popular, and finding a seat can be difficult, although there are quite a few. There's a nice mix of stools and high tables, sofas, and armchairs, so you can choose a comfort level to suit you. I was in with a few friends, and after settling down, we obviously went to get some beer. And the beer choice is tremendous. It changes regularly, and I mean regularly. I got a beer, and enjoyed it so much I went back to get it again 30 minutes later, only to find it was no longer on tap! No worries though, the selection is large enough to find an alternative without difficulty. The beers are expensive though. Average price is about £3-£3.50 for 2/3 pint (strange portion size), so it's definitely above average even for this city. The only other negative is that the music is too loud, so maintaining conversation is difficult unless you're very close to the other person. However, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives, with great beers, great people, and superb decor. Recommended. read more

Great spot to grab a few beers in Edinburgh. They have a great selection and one of the best tasting Porter I enjoyed. My wife had the spicy gnocchi and it's was good with a glass of the Porter as well. The staff is friendly and will help you make a selection if you ask, they will also let you taste the beer before buying. Really enjoyed the atmosphere in here it was very causal. Amazing craft beer bar! We loved this place. They have an outstanding set up here with a modern, spacious interior with plenty of seating, a huge tap list with tasters available, and a full menu that specializes in fancy hot dogs with awesome pretzel buns. It reminds of Mikkeller BAR. For tasters, Hanging Bat has *the best* system I have ever seen. You pay £12 for 5 taster tokens, but you redeem the tokens one at a time so you can savor each beer in your custom flight. Each taster was served in large, stemmed glassware that really lets you experience the beer to its fullest. Generous pours in beautiful glassware for the tasters is really world-class. Not even the best beer bars in the world do this! Our server was on point and knew the beers backward and forward. All around world-class! read more

We made The Hanging Bat our regular bar during our few days in Edinburgh, and we were welcomed with open arms. This spot has an amazing beer selection - including Black IPAs on both days. It was funny to see American beers on tap outside of the US. Go figure! Prices are low, relative to the quality of the food & beer. Get the mac & cheese or hotdog for a quick lunch or afternoon snack. Think: bar food, elevated. There was one occasion that the bar was cash-only. I think their system went down. There is an ATM around the corner if that happens again, but bring some cash just in case. Bathrooms are clean, seating is ample, and the crowd is cool on a weekend evening. We came in the afternoon as well, and had our choice of tables. If you want to people watch, grab a seat at the window counter and see the city go by. I've been there recently with my friends for a beer after a long day. At the beginning we were quite intimidated because the majority of the people there were men (we came in a girly company), but by and by we got used to it. May be in other days the bar is more varied in its visitors :D On the whole, it was very good, the stuff was nice and always ready to give their opinion about each kind of beer and to recommend something (because we had no idea which one to order out of such a rich choice). Cool beer bar on Lothian street! The beer selection is amazing. 6 cask beers, 14 taps, innumerable bottles. Note that the beers are served in either 1/3 or 2/3 pint glasses. I'd say this is a good thing since one can try more, and the prices aren't too bad. Expect to pay between 2 and 5 pounds for a glass. The staff are all super nice and really passionate about beer. They're more than happy to help you find something you'll like and will offer you you a small taste so you don't have to commit blindly. The decor is really cool. The bar is spread over three "floors." The bar is in the entry way with a sort of lofted seating area, and even more seating down stairs. I knocked off a star for the food. I was impressed with the freshness and flavor. Don't get me wrong, everything tasted great, but the prices were a bit wonky considering the serving size. I paid 5 pound for for nachos (picture attached) that, while tasty, definitely came in in a small portion. Overall a really cool bar.
