Losing her is already hard, but knowing she spent her final days feeling ignored hurts even more. From allowing us to do pay-ahead billing to greeting us by name on each and every visit, Forte was fabulous. A few additional items of note. First, unlike most clinics that have a small window overlooking a parking lot, Forte has huge picture windows overlooking a beautiful golf course. Outside the windows you'll see squirrels and birds such as hummingbirds and even brilliantly red cardinals. You might even see a few duffers hacking away and tearing up the turf. Second, parking is easy and plentiful - we never had an issue finding a space right up front. One other thing to mention - their hours. Forte has, at least in my experience, rather late hours. My wife had a couple of appointments where she didn't leave until 5:30PM. The entire staff is amazing. Thank you Sonja for being kind and compassionate to my wife's needs not to mention your patience in dealing with her language barrier issues. Rachel, you often checked in and seemed genuinely interested in my wife's progress. We appreciate that greatly. Diana, the PTA, was also a pleasure to work with and always had kind words of encouragement. Lastly, Grace, sorry for breaking the credit card machine... But seriously, thank you for your kind and courteous nature and in dealing with our insurance issues. You explained things to us which made the process easier to tolerate. In closing, Forte Rehabilitation Clinic has an amazing staff, a beautiful view looking out over a golf course and plenty of parking. They create a very welcoming environment by greeting you by name and checking in on you when another therapist is tending to your rehabilitation. The staff works extra hard in sorting out your insurance which I greatly appreciated. I would return to Forte Rehabilitation without hesitation. Thank you Forte!

Why do all nursing homes and convalescence centers smell the same? If you've ever visited such a…read moreplace, then you know the odor to which I refer: an unpleasant bouquet of 2-nonenel (an unsaturated aldehyde), benzothiazole, dimethylsuplohone, urine, boiled cabbage, mushy poop ("Type 6" on the Bristol Stool Chart), and Vick's VapoRub. Yes, "old people smell" is a documented phenomenon, but must the *entirety* of *every* such facility reek of the aged? Do these places spray "Old People-Scented" Fabreze all over the place? But I digress. The Bridgemoor -- a relatively new rehabilitation center located near the Medical Center -- does indeed smell of granny and grampy, but the facility is immaculate, the staff are friendly and attentive, and the cafe fare is surprisingly good. My dad convalesced here last week after undergoing hip replacement surgery and was mostly satisfied with his stay. Judging by the facade, I initially mistook The Bridgemoor for a swanky apartment complex. The inside is just as fancy, with marbled floors, local artwork, and even a fireplace near the entrance. When my mom and I first entered the facility, we both agreed that it looked more inviting that most mid- to upper-range motel chains. My dad's room included all the amenities, such as a large HDTV, a huge walk-in shower, and plenty of closet space. Most medical facilities trigger my nosocomephobia, but I felt mostly comfortable here. The room felt comfortable and inviting, not clinical. Despite suffering from a touch of post-op soreness, my dad was able to fall asleep easily. That's admittedly not saying much, though, because he's deaf and could sleep through a B-17 bomber crashing into a silo filled with nitroglycerin. Pappy also bestowed much praise upon the male physical therapists employed at The Bridgemoor. His favorites, Eric and Ryan, were patient and helped him become accustomed to using a walker. My dad was much more critical of a certain female therapist, who was too tiny to handle his 236-pound, 6' 1" frame. Furthermore, she failed to consider his idiopathic neuropathy, pushing him beyond his comfort zone. Note to physical therapists: listen to your clients when they tell you enough is enough! The food at the cafe, Dietrich's, was much better than I had expected. The club sandwich I ordered on my first visit was plentiful and made with real turkey breast, not the processed garbage found at most supermarkets. The bacon was crispy and fried to order, the bread was fresh, and the tomatoes were ripe and juicy. The biggest surprise of all: homemade potato chips! I never would have expected to find homemade *anything* at a rehabilitation center, yet there they were: hot, crispy, and topped with a light dusting of salt and lemon pepper. The tuna salad plate I ordered for lunch on my followup visit also tasted homemade and was a huge portion for only $4. Now, I won't go crazy and say it was "hands down the best ever," but it was at least comparable to lunches I've had elsewhere in town. If you are looking for a rehabilitation center near the Medical Center, then please consider The Bridgemoor. It's clean, comfortable, and affordable at just $20/night (with insurance, of course). If "old people smell" gets to you, then order your Breathe Wrong Nose Clips (TM) in advance from yours truly! My comfortable clips force you to breathe the wrong way: through your mouth. They're ideal for nursing homes, emergency visits to 7-11 bathroom stalls, and uncomfortable elevator rides with hobos. P.S. My dad left the facility a week ago today and is doing great. He doesn't smell old yet.

Let me begin with the positives. The staff at Bridgemoor are professional and friendly. Everyone…read moreseems more than happy to help the patients. Now the negatives. The food was often cold. The scrambled eggs were straight out of the freezer, the toast was soggy. I thought I'd have to buy a cow in order to get milk with every meal. And no such thing as coffee in the morning until breakfast was served (coldish coffee, of course). The exception to the helpful people was the people who brought the food. They put it down on the tray table and scooted out of the room like the devil was after them. Oh yeah, salt and pepper were parceled out like gold, even for those of us not on restricted diets. When I tried to call the kitchen to request hot food or some other adjustment, I got a recording saying no one was available to take my call. I was forced to call the administrator to have my concerns met. The worst by far, however, was that there was NO hot water in the bathroom. If I turned the control Just right in the shower, I could get barely lukewarm water. Every shower was a cold one. Finally, IF I had a doctor, he was the invisible man. I have vague memory of a man coming in and saying he was my doctor and then getting out of Dodge as they say. I did see a nurse practioner a couple of times and she seemed interested in her patients. Because my stay was a short one, I could put up with the shortcomings, but I would advise any one who is staying for more than a week, to think hard before choosing Bridgemoor.

The patients died of COVID so goes the story, the CNAs quit or were fired for whatever reason the Administration felt to choose on that particular day. I can't speak for the nurses because there is a handful left from the original group, they tried or at least it seems like they do. During the pandemic, we were not allowed to visit our niece, I used a window to keep in touch so that she knew we were still around. Yet the negligence of these people left her with her left leg bent at the knee whereas before she had both her legs straight and could be seated to take her out for fresh air. Another sister and I have pictures of how careless the ownership, administration, and staff disregard not only the patients but the patients' relatives as well. They walked around without acknowledging anyone! I have seen some of the case workers' and higher-up administration offices' furnishes and they look more like a high-end surgeons' office. It started very well, they had 2 CNAs, therapy (they help move and lift) patients, housekeeping, and physical therapists. At times there was a nurse supervisor, 4 nurses, and enough CNAs for however many patients each hall had. Now depending on the day, time of day, and week, there may be 1 or 4 nurses and 2 CNAs, and during the weekend, if luck should have it, 1 CNA for 4 hallways, more than likely 20 patients per hallway. The staff is overworked, and underpaid and if they speak out, they are (threaten with dismissal) with the loss of all the PO time, the staff (CNAs) have earned or are entitled to. I have warned the staff I would be reporting the problem but, Ive learned the state had a lot to do with the comings and going of companies and owners of such institutions. If people do not speak and take action the state will never do anything to change the lack of proper management. In other words folks, we need to contact our representatives and DEMAND better monitoring of these places, they are considered the next step from a hospital.

I wanted to share this for anyone trying to choose a surgeon...because I know firsthand how…read moreoverwhelming and important this decision is. When I first met Dr. Gassman, I'm not even going to lie... my first thought was, "He looks like Doogie Howser" I remember thinking, wait... are you old enough to be doing this?! But that feeling didn't last long. I came in with a million questions (seriously), and he answered every single one with patience, confidence, and detail. He never made me feel rushed or like I was asking too much which meant a lot during such a big decision. I also did a ton of research on him where he's worked, reviews, everything. That's when I learned how much he specializes in DIEP flap reconstruction and microsurgery, which made me feel even more confident in choosing him. I also loved learning that he has a passion for art and uses that in his work--and honestly, it shows. He is incredibly talented and takes pride in what he does. For reference, I'm 5'3" and about 205 pounds, so if you're someone who's plus size and wondering how this surgery might go for you--I hope this helps ease your mind. Also--before surgery, I was a very small A cup. I actually joked with Dr. Gassman and told him, "I'm the president of the itty bitty titty committee, and if you can get me out of the committee, I would greatly appreciate it" Let's just say... I woke up from my first surgery officially out of the committee--whoop whoop! I had my first DIEP flap surgery on December 3, 2025. I want to share this part because I know it's something everyone worries about--pain. For that first surgery, Dr. Gassman used nerve blocks, and he is phenomenal at them. I actually didn't use any pain medication at all, which still surprises me looking back. The recovery itself was tough (as expected with a major surgery), but the pain control was handled so well. I just had my second surgery on March 20, 2026, and I was honestly nervous...but it ended up being so much easier. I didn't have nerve blocks that time, and it honestly just feels like I did a really intense workout--more sore than actual pain. That was a huge relief. My results are looking good so far, and I even got a new belly button and was able to lower my scar, which I'm super grateful for ! I also want to recognize Dr. Elmi, who performed my double mastectomy. I originally started this journey as a preventative measure, but after my first surgery, she sat down with me and gently explained that I did in fact have cancer. She took the time to draw everything out and explain exactly what type it was in a way I could truly understand. Even though I don't live in San Antonio, she made sure I was set up with care back home in Florida, which meant so much to me. Looking back, I laugh at my first impression--but I'm so grateful I trusted both of these doctors. They are not only highly skilled, but they truly care about their patients. If you are trying to make this decision, I hope my experience gives you a little peace of mind. You will be in very good hands.
