Terrible service. Throughout our experience, we were not checked on once. She took our order, then it took over 20 minutes to get our food AND our drinks, and drinks were forgotten and we weren't given straws. When our food arrived, we weren't given silverware, and only then could we ask for the things that were forgotten. We watched her go to other tables around ours and check on them and clear their tables as well. I'm not sure if this part is normal-- but when we got our checks, we weren't given any sort of writing utensil to fill out the merchant copy of the receipts. The Hive is good, not a bad place to eat. The staff are small town america friendly and have the ideal balance of giving you your space as well as checking up on you. Not a ton of vegetarian options but enough to do the trick for the every now and then visit. I would go back for sure! read more

Nice find! Traveling through on Saturday, 11/26 and the casino hotel recommended The Hive when I asked them where to go for a good steak. And I was treated to an amazing rib eye. Cooked to medium rare perfection per my request. It had just the right about of seasoning, it was juicy and tons of flavor. One of the best I've ever had. Took off a star for the sides as the baked potato was a little small and probably cooked yesterday. And the salad had a taste that lead me to believe it was treated with a preservative. But the salad did have a lot of toppings and was nicely assembled/presented, so I appreciated that. Can't remember my servers name, young blond woman wearing glasses, she was great. Very attentive and apologized profusely when she first served me a prime rib instead of Rib Eye and admitted it was her mistake. It was not a problem at all and she was great. Nice feel to the place. I enjoy this place very much and have ate here quiet often with my girlfriend. This is one of our go to places if we go to Thief River and have a good time with good food. I don't have anything bad to say about the food at all. I have gotten the Walleye a couple times which can be a little sketchy at restaurants but it has always been amazing and a good portion for the price that you pay. I have also tried other dishes there and they are all very good. Also, if you want an appetizer I would recommend the mozzarella sticks. These are much better than other restaurants you may eat at. Service loses some points here as once we waited about an hour for our food. It was packed, but still this is too long. Also, the last time I was there they didn't come by and give us refills until we got our food. Overall, a great place to eat and I will keep going back and back. read more

Super friendly wait staff! Amazing salad bar. Not enough room on plate for all choices in the first pass. Potatoes salads were terrific. Walnut, broccoli salad was the bomb. Macaroni salad was tasty. Visited Thief River Falls from out of town and ate lunch here because we were staying at a nearby hotel. All six of us really enjoyed the food here. Their salad bar was comprehensive and very fresh. Their Beer Cheese Soup and walleye were amazing. Service was attentive and quick. read more

I've went there twice. First time it was not busy at all. The waitress took forever to get our orders/drinks. Simply because she was sitting in the kitchen gossiping with coworkers and I know this because I was less than 10 feet away. The tables are always incredibly sticky. The food is mediocre. My first time I just got a regular cheese burger to see if the food was as good as everyone says. I could've made better at home with a simple George Foreman grill. The second time was busier and it was louder in there. I went with a group and they put two tables together for us except we had to sit 4 feet away from each other and yell to just simply talk while we waited for our food which was once again very mediocre. Escorted to a booth. 10 minutes later she saunters over. 14 minutes after that I'm delivered a beer in a bottle. 15 minutes after that and she's never shown up again, except at the next booth where she chatted them up along with another waitress? Nope. One visit to a booth in a nearly empty restaurant in the span of nearly 40 minutes? The Hive gets two stars instead of one because the food is okay. But OMG get take out. The staff was really nice and friendly. I ordered the walleye dinner and sat at the bar. When my food arrived it looked great. Roasted veggies and two pieces of deep fried fish with cold garlic mashed potatoes. I ate all but the cold potatoes. When the waitress asked if I liked my meal I told her, the potatoes are cold, her response was I better let the cook know and walked off. I assumed she might reduce the bill, HA, she did not. Since they changes from Fraziers to hive, I have been here couple times. I have to say that I have been very disappointed. First time the food was just gross. Their garlic mashed potatoes tasted like 2 days old. Steak was over cooked. No Jameson!!! Second time food was little better, I ordered fries to be safe. Walleye was ok. They need better batter. Atmosphere is way too loud for my preference but it's nice and warm which is a tough thing to find in this town...a warm restaurant that you don't have to wear a jacket while eating. My daughter ordered Gluten free food as she has celiacs and her food came out with a regular bun. Luckily the waitress noticed right away. Wait for food and service was a bit longer then I like but not terrible. Had veggie burger and a regular burger and waffle fries. Burgers were okay. Nothing spectacular but the GF bun was actually toast which I was not impressed by. However the honey BBQ sauce and the honey mustard sauce are to die for!!!!! Great bar food!!! I had the D-train burger,(beef patty, pulled pork, pickles and Cole slaw) that was their special. I also upgraded to onion rings, which were huge!! Excellent!!! My wife had the Philly and crispy fries, which were equally as good. The staff was friendly and the place was very clean. This is the 3rd time I have eaten at this restaurant, the first two times were good. This time I was told that the waiting time was about 45 minutes to an hour because there was only one cook. The place was full. Once seated, I ordered a sirloin steak, baked potato, coleslaw, and a skewer of shrimp. The waitress was poor in her service. Waited about 45 minutes for my meal. When it arrived, the potato was brown and looked a day old. The steak was dry and hard. She even forgot my shrimp skewer which I had to call her to ask for it. I asked for another potato and she came back and told me that they were out of baked potato, so I asked her how I got this one, and she said it was the last one! In the whole restaurant!!! I told her that it looked like a left-over potato from the day before, and she just smiled. So I ordered fried onion rings which were almost burned!! The best thing from this order was the coke! Very poor service and food prep! I would not recommend this place. Consistency in good customer service and proper meal preparation is the key to success in having happy customers who want to come back again. I know because I was a cook and chef in the US Navy for 20 years, and cooked for and served admirals, civilian dignitaries, and shipboard sailors with great food. read more

There is not a lot of places to eat in thief river falls. They have great food. I have had several different experiences here.

Low quality food, but decent service. I'd skip having a meal and just go there for drinks at the bar.

This is my second visit in two days. The food is pretty solid. A little over sauced and salted, but not bad for a bar and grill. The issue I'm more concerned with, is the fact I almost seem like a burden to the staff. I try to be really friendly and not create work for them, and I get the fact I'm not a local person, but come on. The staff seriously needs a shot of personality. They never neglected me, but they certainly aren't the most friendly lot. I've ripped we'll both days but they really didn't earn it.
