When I first saw this sign go up, I knew this place was going to be for me. And I automatically knew it was going to be a used outdoor gear shop. How? Am I a marmot whisperer? (I am, but that's not how I knew) If you've ever been up in the mountains a decent number of times, you have undoubtedly seen these fat bastards. Sunning on rocks, eating flowers, standing curiously on their hind legs, poking out of burrows, and generally being shockingly unafraid of humans and awkwardly adorable. My goal was to review this place on Groundhog Day (two days ago), which in Alaska is known as "Marmot Day" (it's true, look it up!), but I failed. FYI: the groundhog is a type of marmot. More specifically, it's a marmot that likes to live alone, in eastern North America, and it doesn't really like heights like most of its alpine brothers. Also, if you've been in the mountains for extended periods, you've probably got GAS. What is GAS? It's not something you get from eating dehydrated meals for a week (that's a different kind). It's Gear Acquisition Syndrome. You like to buy stuff you don't need. But you trick yourself by saying things like "but this will get me into the mountains more" or "but...but, my other three pairs of crampons don't have points like this". I have good news and I have bad news. Like beer, the Hoarding Marmot is both the solution and the answer to all your GAS problems. BUY: You can buy barely-used equipment here for some insane prices. I know what you're thinking; I've been to those places too. I've been to places with the same idea as the Hoarding Marmot, where you end up rooting around through lots of neon-colored stuff from the 80's and 90's that's all clumped together in a musty basement. Once in a blue moon, you might find something decent. But it's the exception, not the rule. Here, I found a pair of $500 ice climbing boots, barely used, for $100. Seriously, they looked brand-new. (Scarpa Rebel Pro GTX, if you're curious) If you want to get into ice climbing, there are some pretty good deals on used crampons. Some aren't in the greatest shape, but the pricing always accurately reflects the quality. Some great "starter" crampons here. It looked like they had a TON of skiing stuff too, but I'm not a skier and can't comment on the merits of the selection. They also have a tiny little rock wall in the corner to try out the rock shoes! I saw some of those that, like my ice climbing boot acquisition, looked more-or-less new. They didn't have a ton of clothing, but what they did have was from pretty legit brands and in good shape. SELL: I haven't sold anything here yet, but they seem to have a pretty well-organized system for selling items. There's a great explanation on their website. DEFINITELY: Check them out. Especially if you're new to mountain-stuff, and haven't yet developed GAS. Join us. BONUS: They accept Amex, which an increasing number of Anchorage business hate to accept.

This consignment store is well organized and it looks like they're still picky about their inventory that has been previously owned. Good quality gear at reasonable prices. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. I found a couple of treasures that I didn't come in intending to buy but I'm glad I found them.

No thanks , never again !!!!

REI Anchorage is in its third location since I started shopping here in the '80s. This one is way large. special shout out to the ski rental shop, and honorable mention to Marcus for taking the time to chat with us about what we needed, where the trails were good - etc. Rented two days for nice cc skiing at Kincaid, equipment was in great condition. ended up buying a pair of boots after great assistance with trying them on (though one does have to make oneself visible - the staffing is a little lean imo). all a way of saying, i am glad REI continues to be a great resource in my hometown. recommend you shop here.

Today, two weeks later I went to return the size 11 boots that don't fit., that have never been worn outside, and was told that I've been banned from returns. I didn't receive any emails about this, I searched my email and my spam and deleted folders, nor did I receive any snail mail. I've been a member since 2008 and have spent over $40,000 at REI over the years, I guess that doesn't count for anything. For outdoor gear, I recommend shopping local and going to AMH. (Alaska, mountaineering and hiking.) Update: now every time I buy something from REI a manager has to come up and tell me about what a bad consumer I am before I'm allowed to buy something from them.

We stopped in because we were both on the hunt for work boots and Carhartt's. Upon entry, an awesome table with fishing paraphernalia, which was great to see since I've been tying flies to get prepped for the season. No fly tying supplies, but plenty of quality gear in the store! The staff was super nice and quick to offer assistance! We were browsing but the moment we were in the footwear section, there was someone there to assist with sizes. Excellent selection of workwear for women, plenty of Carhartt's and Dovetail clothes with sizes from 0-24 that I was able to see. A helpful gentleman mentioned that if my size wasn't on the rack, they'd be happy to check a small supply in the back and also their downtown store. That's was great to know, since I forgot about the downtown location. They have a couple of dressing rooms for trying on items prior to purchase. Although we didn't find boots for my husband, I did pick up some Dovetail work pants and overalls that are not only functional, but attractive too. Everyday clothes men's, women & children...blue collar work clothing, high vis, sportsman wear, boots & shoes and a nice selection of fishing gear to boot! They offer a rewards program, birthday coupons and veteran's discount to boot! Big Ray's is definitely worth a stop!

She seemed like she was uncomfy with me asking questions about what type of bike to get and didn't have any good insights in to the coastal trail. The guy I worked with (Pablo's nephew) was great! He was knowledgeable about the trail, what to look out for, where to stop, and rescued me when my bike stopped working properly. He is the only reason I am not giving a lower rating! I rented a standard bike. I made it 0.3 miles from the shop when the chain completely broke. They brought me a new bike that was the same style. Both bikes looked beat up and clearly used hard. The second bike never quite shifted right, by the time I was half way back it wouldn't shift at all causing me to call and have a third bike brought to me. When that bike arrived I just wanted to be done, I was over it and thankfully Pablo's Nephew (I really wish I knew his name) took me back. He was very friendly and discounted me for the trouble. The e-bikes looked to be in better condition! So maybe try those!:)
