My wife and I make it a point to support local small businesses and we try to give our retail sporting goods business to this store in particular. In general, we have recieved good service, especially from the folks in the back. However, there is a woman who consistently works at the front counter that nearly always spoils our visit to the store. She is borderline surly with us and other customers, never smiles, acts like she is being bothered to check us out, and makes no effort to provide any type of customer service. Today, I was checking out and managed to knock a small rack of items off the wall where it was hanging. I tried to hang it back up but couldn't so I laid it on the counter and apologized. She picked it up, looked at it, gave a loud, audible huff, and threw it, (yes, threw) on the counter behind her with a look of loathing and disgust. It made me feel bad that I had just spent a hundred bucks in her store. Meanwhile, another customer nicely asked the other clerk for a tide table book. The clerk pointed it out and as soon as the customer turned his back snarkily said "why don't you just put it on your smartphone." Talking trash about your customer behind their back is a sure sign you have the wrong person working for you. This total lack of customer service from this woman is driving us away from this store. There are other places we can purchase what we want but have tried to remain loyal to B&Js. However, today's experience may have been the straw that broke the camels back and pushed us away for good. read more

I went to Denali for camping last week and Walmart run out and I had to get a $45 bear spray here. Before purchase, I asked the clerk if I could return it when unopened nor used. She asked the owner and got a no... I don't mind them charging a restocking fee if needed, but frankly it's beyond me why there is such a policy of no return of unopened bear spray. I completed my trip camping, saw bear 13 times (on the bus) and did not even bring the spray to the tent. At the end left to the nice truck owner Erik who I rented from. I would allow return of unused unopened spray, with a stocking fee if needed for the trouble. Hope this post helps the owner and those consumers who may run into similar situation. (Not that they actually shared this information with me: I had to look it up on their website) You're better off buying online at least they have no question returns. Especially for such expensive items. Bought 160 dollar boots here wore them a few times, got a horrible rash on both feet. Showed manager horrible rash, and clean barely used boots. Said he couldn't do the return. They also didn't disclose their return policy, and the receipt said 30 days. read more

Cheap fishing equipment and horrible management. Every net ever purchased here broke the same day. Nothing sold here is for true Alaskan fishers. Hundreds of dollars spent only to be wasted. Once nets bought here were taken out on the river they broke the same day and they will not refund on their defective equipment. I love BJ's! The store is 2 floors, so it's WAY bigger than you expect it to be. BJ's specializes in camping, fishing and coldweather survival gear and they have a lot of items in stock that other places like REI and Cabela's either don't have or overcharge for. BJ's prices are right down the middle. The best part is everyone that works at BJ's is a hardcore outdoorsman, so if you have questions, they have give you answers based on experience. Looking to go out for our first Alaska dipnetting adventure, this place came highly recommended for gearing up. We were greeted by an employee who confessed she he didn't know anything about dipnetting, no big deal! We were directed to the next employee. She didn't know about dipnetting either. She hollered to another employee who was downstairs. You guessed it - he was also unable to answer or questions or direct us to a setup he could get started with. The dipnets come in pieces and no employee in the whole store could explain what parts were needed, how they worked, or what the best approach would be for outfitting ourselves. Considering this place was recommended for their knowledgeable staff and great selection, we left very disappointed and with what feels like less of a clue how to equip ourselves for dipnetting. read more

This place is awesome. I've driven by this store probably a thousand times and somehow had never realized what a great fishing and boating resource this place is. I've been trying to gear up for the upcoming halibut fishing season and it was really frustrating trying to find everything I needed at the bigger box outdoor stores in anchorage. I saw B & J was an okuma dealer so I decided to stop and see what kind of reels they had. I was blown away at their selection of reels, rods, tackle, line, shrimping gear, rain gear, clothing... they have anything and everything you could need to get ready for your fishing season!! I won't be going to the two bigger stores anymore for fishing gear. These guys have a much better selection and I've noticed their prices are quite a bit lower on a bunch of items too. Unlike Sportsman's warehouse, or big boxes like Sports Authority or Walmart, you get personal, knowledgeable service without feeling like a number on the line. I spent two hours getting fitted up for a pair of fishing rods, reels and gear for me and the lady. After explaining I was a recent transplant to Alaska, the employees we dealt with took their time, explained everything and even provided a few good tips for places to start fishing for Reds and Rainbows. It may cost a few pennies more than you'd spend at one of the other places, but in an age where service and quality are often foregone for the bottom line, its worth going to B & J's for a "real" experience. read more

These guys are just the nicest bunch you'll ever talk about fishing to. We are newbies when it comes to fishing. We'd done a little more than play the card game, but not much more than that. We were helped by a guy who was mindful of our expertise and our budget. He easily had a rod and lures picked out, and was patient with our questions. Even better, you can go downstairs and pick up your fishing license from a snarky (in a totally good way) woman. Maybe it's because it was late in the season, but everything was on sale or clearance. We got everything including the licenses for $100. For us, that was better than joining a fishing tour where you can't keep the gear. read more

This is an incredibly convenient location to stock up on your fishing gear. They have everything: tackle, rods, reels, rain gear, eggs, bear spray, etc. If you're going to fish the afternoon tides at Ship Creek, be sure to stop by next door to pick up a bucket of KFC chicken...your fishermen friends will thank you. read more

I bought a pair of Xtratuf women's deck boots on Sunday, October 6 as a gift for my significant other. I checked the size and color in the store but did not do a close inspection. I live outside of Anchorage, and when I got home and looked at the boots again in the evening, it was very clear they had been worn previously. The carboard that comes in new Xtratufs was gone, the soles were stained from pavement, and both toes had scuffs and gouges in the rubber. Unacceptable condition for something purchased at the price of a new item and purchased as a gift. I took a few pictures of the boots so I would have proof of the damage with a timestamp showing it had happened before I purchased them. My receipt showed I bought them at 2:44pm and the photos were taken at 6:31pm the same day. Might not be good enough evidence for a Law and Order episode, but I wanted to show I was on the up and up. For that reason I called B&J the next day to let them know the situation and that I would be in later in the week when I made it back to Anchorage. The person I spoke with wasn't friendly but let me know she would let other people at the store know. I went in the next day to return them, and the cashier who sold them to me was present with another man and woman. I that the boots appeared worn and was rudely dismissed, and told the boots had only been "worn in the store" by the woman before she even looked at them. The man grabbed the box the boots had come in, stormed off and returned with a new pair. He gave them to me, which I appreciated, and then insisted I give him the box back (he must have forgotten he took the original box) because those boots were "still sellable." I told him I needed it and he grabbed it from my hands and gave me the boots back. I was really confused they were so angry and rude as I had been polite and calm and it hadn't even really been a conversation. Since I had the boots, I decided it would be best to leave. This was completely unacceptable and unprofessional treatment of a customer and it's concerning that this store would respond so rudely when they made the mistake. I get that they are boots, but if I'm going to pay for new boots, I want new boots. I have previously had really good experiences in this store, but won't be shopping here again. If you do, make sure you check what you're buying first, and watch out if you try to return it. read more

Being tired of REI having become the "Wal-Mart" of sporting good stores (everything made in China), I stopped here for the first time. Pleasantly surprised by the amount of items available still made in this country. Not being a hunter/fisher person I'm not a big fan of shopping somewhere that I hear hunting stories while browsing so it will still be a toss-up between REI and shop-local but good to know there are more choices. read more

I paid my first visit to B&J today after having a delicious lunch at Charlie's Bakery a few doors down. The friend I was with just scored a job on the slope and he was in the market for some winter gear. I love this place. The staff was very helpful without being at all pushy or obnoxious. And unlike some of the big box stores around town that seem like they have a wide selection of things like winter boots but turn out to only have them in a few sizes (either very big or very small) the sales guys would run to the back and come out with all the sizes in all the boots we needed. His feet are gonna be toasty warm up on the slope. And it's not just 'guy stuff' -- they have the biggest selection of smartwool socks I've seen and I found a beautiful pair of Baffin boots that felt like heaven when I stepped into them. It was hard to leave them behind but I knew my husband would kill me if I came home with yet another pair of boots. My next pair of winter boots though are coming from B&J. If there's anything you need for fishing and the outdoors in Alaska, chances are they'll have it. Highly recommended. read more

Stumbled upon B&J last month and man do I wish I found this place sooner! Great customer service! The guys in the rod and reel section rock. I came in to the store with the intent of buying a fly rod for Sockeye fishing. I admit, I didn't know a whole lot about fly fishing and they could have up sold me on a rod & reel I didn't need. They set me up with a decent rod and reel (to include backing, fly line, and leader) for a decent price. Sure, they were a few buck more than the box stores (Fred Meyers, Walmart, etc) and Sportsman Warehouse but the service was more than worth it. They even showed me how to tie a few knots and gave me some advice on how and where to fish. I'm definitely going back again for any outdoor needs! read more

I would NOT recommend going there. I wish I could give it zero stars. I bought a very expensive rod a few months ago, and after only using it a few times, it broke while reeling in a fish. They said since it had been used, it was not a rod defect and would not exchange it. They said they didn't want to "eat" the cost of the rod, even though they clearly sold me a defective product. This comment clearly shows where their priorities are, and it is not selling you something that works. The rod was definitely not mistreated or mishandled, it was simply defective. If you value a company that stands behind their products and provides good customer service, go somewhere else. read more

was shopping in this store Sunday 23 august 2015, eveorything was great right up until I went to check out, Downstairs they had some flotation jackets on the rack marked at 40% off. I was only able to find one price tag on one sleeve of one jacket, I asked the employee if the marked price of 124.99 on the sleeve applied to all of the jackets on that rack marked at 40% off, his reply was absolutely yes they all should be the same price, I said great and picked a 3x out to purchase and walked to the cash register upstairs to check out. I placed the jacket on the counter with some other items and a gentleman behind the cash register just looked at me and did not say a single word, after about five to eight minutes minutes of trying to find the price in his computer and not even saying hi to me, a woman walked up, the man said to her,"i cant find this" referring to the jacket, I said at that point, that the gentleman down stairs told me it was 124.00 dollars as marked on the other jacket plus 40% off. the man nor the woman said a single word to me, they kept on searching their computer. I am now growing tired of waiting and the line is getting longer and longer at the cash register, I again said the price and sale numbers which their own employee told me downstairs, still not even a hi from neither one of the man or woman, I said come down stairs and I will show you, without out saying a single word the man followed me down stairs, I lifted the arm of the jacket that was marked and showed the man the price, then the tag on the rack at 40%off, The very first time this man spoke to me was right then and there, and he yelled at me. "WELL ITS NOT ON THAT JACKET UPSTAIRS". I said your employee right over there said they were all the same price, I informed the man if that was not the same price that I did not want the jacket, I said I will meet you upstairs. I go back up the stairs, as I rounded the corner to walk the stairs the man started yelling at the employee like he was some kind of a dog. I was totally shocked at that behavior. I kept walking up the stairs. I walked up to the register lady and said you will probably be keeping this jacket just ring up everything else, and we will wait for the guy downstairs to inform us of truth in pricing or not. meanwhile my friend walks into the store, we are talking and my friend asks me what is up and how is it going, I told him that I was buying stuff for our boats and waiting for the guy downstairs to verify the price of 124.99 , I said if they are not going to honor the sale then I will not purchase the jacket, my friend said oh good and our conversation was ending with a hand shake and a good bye. then I turned back to the cashier lady and said if they were not going to honor the 124.99 as marked and advertised by the employee and written numbers on the sale rack, then just remove the jacket from the pile that I no longer wanted it, the guy down stairs came running up the stairs yelling "SHUT UP TALKING ABOUT THE PRICING ON THE JACKET" he was running and out of breath and hell bent on causing a confrontation, I said excuse me who are you, ' IM THE MANAGER' this is the second time he spoke to me, now I know this is the manager though. I said that when you mark a price you should stand by it, when your employee says that it is 124.99 then that is what it is,' DONT TALK TO ME LIKE THAT' this is coming right out of the mouth of the store manager, I am so mad because he is yelling at me for marking a price and then not honoring it and yelling at me about it. what kind of problem does this guy have, I told him I am a paying customer and to just remove the jacket, the price was now at 179 dollars and change. this manager thought it was ok with me to add 50 dollars to the price and that would be ok. NOT as the so called manager became more and more confrontational and blaming his poor attitude on me, the shopper that did not do anything except try to purchase an item, I finally told the man to just keep everything and said I would purchase the items somewhere else that respected their patrons, i began to walk out, the mans mouth was still running at an all out yell. I asked to speak with the owner and was told that was not possible, due to that, I will never again cross the threshold at the b and js store in anchorage Alaska, nor will my other business partners, by the way, if you order onyx jackets on line they are all the same price from small to 3x with a 5.00 dollar difference, they are far cheaper than b and js store sells them at as well.
