So far I have been unable to find out anything about the building itself; I shall add the history to this review at a later date. The affliiated Pioneer Café was opened in 2004 and has proved to be a great success (open Monday to Friday from 11.00am until 3.00pm) There are three modern stained glass windows (designed by Moira Parker) inside which are particularly beautiful. You can have fair-trade tea and coffee and snacks including home made soup, fresh sandwiches and home baking. There are excellent views over the main runway at Prestwick Airport!

This is a wonderful old ruin, all that's left of the abbey since most of it was pulled down in…read more1562. A church is thought to have stood on this site as early as 1157, but the major part of the building was created in the 13th century. What remains today is still very impressive. The abbey is on a rise overlooking the River Garnock in the centre of the town, immediately off the pedestrianised shopping street. Free to visit too! Very knowledgable volunteers and I loved the informative Eglington Castle history too. See the ruins of the Abbey too. There are just ruins of the abbey left.

This is a 19th Century, Venetian Gothic church and probably the most striking building in Irvine…read more It overlooks the square, band stand and pedestrianised Rivergate (shopping) Centre. The awful thing about it is that it is derelict! It has been a community centre and later there were plans to turn it into a new Wetherspoon pub but these fell through. I hope it will not be demolished (as has been proposed) as it is a beautiful and interesting building to see.
