We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

Found myself passing though Wymeswold whilst having to take a devious route due to a major closure of part of the A14 near Kettering. Said I wanted a pint of a lightish bitter, he served me Harvest Pale (3.8%abv), it was excellent, good taste for such a light bitter, though when I had sat down I spotted an Adnams pump, and old favourite of mine, indeed I have just driven from East Suffolk where its brewed in Southwold. Their light bitter is 3.7%abv. Nice menu of pub food, then he pointed out special today was Liver and bacon. The large portion came with excellent mash, loads of gravy, peas and onions and was absolutely delicious. The jovial Landlord was good for a bit of a natter, and despite there not being too many people in , there was a nice atmosphere, one of the reasons I used to patronise it in my youth, and it only cost me £8.75 What a lovely experience to go back there

A set lunch was on offer at excellent value (2 courses for £18, £3 more for a third course). The atmosphere was lively with a friendly buzz of contented patrons in both the bar and the restaurant. However, it is the food which really shines. It all starts positively with good quality bread (sourced from a local bakery) which was generously sliced and served with butter at room temperature (cold butter being a pet hate). My starter was a wood pigeon salad. The wood pigeon (cooked rare) was delicious. The main was equally accomplished - roast supreme of chicken with well seasoned crispy skin served on a pearl barley mushroom risotto which provided welcome texture and a creamy sauce. Unfortunately, I had no time for desert. However, they certainly did look delicious and I will be returning soon (with more time) to get involved with the pudding part of the menu. So, its good value, serves excellent food. What is not to like? Not a lot for me - and I don't appear to be in a minority as it seemed to be popular. Hopefully it will continue to go from strength to strength.

On Tuesday night this week, the Landlord did the cooking for our party. The wife was trying to serve at the bar AND WAIT ON US AT THE TABLE FOR 9 people, I ask you, this is absolutely impossible. 3 diners got their rump steaks, 2 without vegetables, meanwhile, the other 6 were waiting for their turkey. Eventually, we did all get served after Lynn tried to do 2/3 jobs at once. My experience was further spoilt by Lynn overcharing me by £10.95 and then she did not REFUND MY DEPOSIT OF £45.00. So my advice to anyone thinking of eating there is - don't know what happened to a 'new' chef I heard about, he was non-existant on !st December. Don't bother, find another venue!

The Old Barn Inn was a warm welcome for this weary traveler who had had a nasty encounter with…read morenature only a few minutes before. I needed a place to escape the rainy elements, sit down, catch my breath and have a small meal. The Old Barn Inn was right there, situated in the small village of Glooston, northeast of Leicester. I was expecting what has been typical, inexpensive, no-thought-put-into-the-meal pub food. But much to my delight, this place far exceeded that expectation, and allowed me to escape for an hour. The young men who own and run this pub, have taken great care into making sure each meal is as fresh, organic and locally-grown as possible. They bake all their own bread daily, the flour comes from a local farm. Also, they make their desserts daily as well. I ordered the Homemade Ciabatta with Brie and Sauteed Mushrooms, which is served with a healthy leafy salad, lightly sprinkled with vinaigrette, and skinny chips, along with a pot of English Breakfast tea. The ciabatta bread had come out of the oven an hour before, and the entire presentation was artfully done. Though I didn't have any dessert, if it's as well made as the ciabatta, it will be incredible. And I have a strong feeling it will not disappoint those who find themselves at The Old Barn Inn, which is now just the pub. The owners live upstairs in the inn quarters. They offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes. Dining here is well worth the journey.
