Without hesitation our guide immediately recommended the Old Thatch Tavern. First of all, it is centrally located and easy to find. Once there you're taking by the decor and homely feeling. The staff were amazing. I wasn't drinking hard liquor and they guided me through a variety of Apple ciders that were delightful. They made the entire experience 1000% better. Their advice and knowledge really made the stop one of the best drinking experiences we had in England. Little by little more members of our crew continues showing up and eventually we had a full blown part going. Again, it was a blast! I can't wait to go again, make a stop at the Old Thatch Tavern and relive some of the memories.

It was 10.25 on Wednesday evening, February 25th, but we were turned away by the young barman, as he said he had already called last orders and wasn't letting anybody else in. Now, my husband and I were very disappointed, as everywhere else in the town had been so welcoming and accommodating. We walked across the road and had a few drinks in another bar, as there are plenty of nice places to choose from, BUT, if I was the owner of this establishment, I would not be best pleased at young bar staff turning my customers away. That is a lot of revenue to lose over the year if this is happening every night, especially with the cost of living at its current high and the daily struggle that pubs face to stay profitable!! Maybe a bit of staff re-training wouldn't go amiss and a reminder of who pays the wages!!

Making a refreshing change from ye olde pubs, the Oppo is a modern French bistro with a good a la carte menu and a generous daily specials menu too. When we arrived, at about 5pm, they were nearly full already with a pre-theatre crowd (we were going too), but were able to give us a table in an area near the back, which was lovely and private. We only had time to stay for a main course, but if I was in the area again I'd happily try starters and puddings too. My boyfriend ordered the pork belly from the a la carte, which looked delicious, and I went for the large portion of moules mariniere avec frites. To my pleasant surprise there was not a single closed mussel in the bowl, and not even any that you had to really pry open. Every one had opened beautifully. And they were priced very reasonably too, the pork belly was about £13.75 and the moules were a snip at less than £9. Fab! The Oppo is a great choice for a pre-theatre meal in Stratford-upon-Avon, so much better than many of the pubs in the area for similar prices. But you should book if you can, it's very popular and you really don't want to miss out.

Our party of six was easily accommodated in their upstairs dining rooms on a Thursday evening around 8:00pm. We made a reservation on open table earlier in the day. Our server was Meghan who was cheerfully warm, welcoming and quite knowledgeable about the menu. Meghan made excellent menu suggestions. Loxley's also has a gluten free and a dairy free version of their current menu so special orders are simple. We started out with a charcuterie sampler that was full of delectable treats. I enjoyed the mushroom risotto and added some tiger prawns. Others in our party enjoyed the pork belly, duck and cod dishes. All delicious and artfully prepared. Of course Loxley's has a wide assortment of beers, wines and cocktails to enjoy with your dinner. If you are looking for less touristy fine dining in Stratford on Avon you will find it here. Its not the biggest of fish and chip shops but is adequate. You can get about 8 people in the shop before its getting full. The staff are ok in here, could be batter ( lame joke), but hey it could be a lot lot worse. They sell the usual that you would expect from a chippy. On to the food, if you want fish fine no problems here, they taste very very nice. Chips , well if you get fresh ones they are fine, but they have been known to be a little old and being not as nice as they could be. The kebabs here are nice but the lamb is kept in water to keep it moist which is not ideal really. Apart from those little moans the shop is actually quite nice. The prices are reasonable too so no complinats there either. All in all a nice chippy on a good day and at worst and ok chippy on a bad day, so 3 stars for this as it is a bit of a let down.
