Without hesitation our guide immediately recommended the Old Thatch Tavern. First of all, it is centrally located and easy to find. Once there you're taking by the decor and homely feeling. The staff were amazing. I wasn't drinking hard liquor and they guided me through a variety of Apple ciders that were delightful. They made the entire experience 1000% better. Their advice and knowledge really made the stop one of the best drinking experiences we had in England. Little by little more members of our crew continues showing up and eventually we had a full blown part going. Again, it was a blast! I can't wait to go again, make a stop at the Old Thatch Tavern and relive some of the memories.

It was 10.25 on Wednesday evening, February 25th, but we were turned away by the young barman, as he said he had already called last orders and wasn't letting anybody else in. Now, my husband and I were very disappointed, as everywhere else in the town had been so welcoming and accommodating. We walked across the road and had a few drinks in another bar, as there are plenty of nice places to choose from, BUT, if I was the owner of this establishment, I would not be best pleased at young bar staff turning my customers away. That is a lot of revenue to lose over the year if this is happening every night, especially with the cost of living at its current high and the daily struggle that pubs face to stay profitable!! Maybe a bit of staff re-training wouldn't go amiss and a reminder of who pays the wages!!

Our party of six was easily accommodated in their upstairs dining rooms on a Thursday evening around 8:00pm. We made a reservation on open table earlier in the day. Our server was Meghan who was cheerfully warm, welcoming and quite knowledgeable about the menu. Meghan made excellent menu suggestions. Loxley's also has a gluten free and a dairy free version of their current menu so special orders are simple. We started out with a charcuterie sampler that was full of delectable treats. I enjoyed the mushroom risotto and added some tiger prawns. Others in our party enjoyed the pork belly, duck and cod dishes. All delicious and artfully prepared. Of course Loxley's has a wide assortment of beers, wines and cocktails to enjoy with your dinner. If you are looking for less touristy fine dining in Stratford on Avon you will find it here. But one act from the staff compels me: We were walking into town, unsure where would be open, it was really very late. Two intimidating looking bouncers are stood outside No1 (as is their job). We pause across the road, wondering at a country bar that needs bouncers like that, i was about to walk on when they bellowed, "don't worry its nice in here, come on over!" Both with beaming smiles, one walked us in and pointed us to a good spot to sit and the other instructed my friend as to where to smoke (out the front it seemed was less windy that night). I was amazed, to be honest i'm used to bouncers being short tempered and sometimes pretty brash with you (thats just part of city life!). This is the first review i've penned where the security made a place worth visiting for me, well done guys!!

After an agonizing 30 minutes after, we finally received our mains - beef Wellington. The beef was dry and overcooked, literally had to dunk in the sauce 3x before you could eat it. The pastry surrounding it was cold and borderline soggy. Effectively, the dish wasn't hot so why did it take so long to come out? The beef was accompanied by some oddly fixed flavorless salad of green beans, kale, and green onion. The side of the cauliflower was delicious. Desserts were ok - two different types of chocolate. Drinks were good. Staff member who served us was very friendly and the staff certainly looked overwhelmed at serving the level of business that day.

The tea was lovely and very filling but I would have liked to have seen something else other than victoria sandwich cake as it felt like cream and jam overkill having that part of the scones too. The waitress service was friendly and attentive, and although we spent a couple of hours there I did not feel like we had to rush and vacate our table. If you have eaten or drunk a little too much, you can retire to one of their twelve ensuite bedrooms. A lovely bistro that I would happily return to again.

We waited half an hour for our bottle of wine...this felt like we were being punished!! On Sunday night there is always live music and an enthusiastic crowd who come along to sing and dance the Sunday night blues away. It's loud and it's fun. Add the splendid RSC theatre and a Bank Holiday vintage car event and a craft market and plenty of sunshine and smiling faces and you've got all you need for a happy weekend.
