Tucked just slightly off the busy main street, The Ivy Café Marylebone feels like stumbling upon a hidden gem. I wandered in without much research beyond a few photos and reviews--and I was absolutely blown away. It now sits firmly at the top of my favorite dining experiences in London. The setting is stunning inside and out. If the weather allows, the alfresco seating with flowers and people-watching is delightful. Step inside, though, and it's like entering a glamorous, maximalist living room--think a warm and whimsical wealthy grandmother's abode, filled with color and character. The bar itself is a showstopper, and whether you're seated in a booth or at a table, you're wrapped in that same eclectic, welcoming vibe. And the food? Outstanding. I tried shepherd's pie for the very first time here, and it set the bar high--juicy, full of flavor, with just the right rosemary undertones. The steak tartare was beautifully balanced, with capers, parsley, mustard, and a silky raw egg yolk that let the quality of the beef shine through. The duck liver parfait was unlike anything I've had before: unbelievably smooth and rich, paired with a side that added an earthy, textured contrast. The good: the food we ate was delicious. It's in a great location and the decor is handsome. Drinks were well made. The bad: service is chaotic. Lots of rushing around looking busy, but not really doing anything. Most staff are doing each others jobs, with the host and management removing empty plate from tables but not able to take an order when we asked. It took 25 minutes for us to place a food order, despite us being in a very prominent position within the restaurant and clearly invisible in plain sight. Customer service is really lacking. The ability to communicate effectively with diners. In addition, they really need to take better care of customers, watch tables, ask if we'd like another drink if they see an empty glass - don't just whip the empty one away without checking. Go for the food. It's good. Don't go if you value service (and your time!). read more

We found this spot nearby our hotel which looked quite busy. Didn't have a dinner reservation but we snagged a spot outside on the patio. I ordered the shepherds pie and truffle and Parmesan fries. Both were so delicious! The pie came with a red wine sauce that helped cut the heaviness of the ground lamb meat and mashed potatoes. The fries were very crispy on the outside and were generously covered in Parmesan and truffle. My fave part of the meal! I also tried a sip of the white onion and truffle soup which also had an intense truffle flavour. Very satisfying on a cool summer evening. The hamburger came deconstructed but we didn't notice till after our meal that it's supposed to come with fries on the side. We were wondering what the little cup of sauce was for! Oops. My friend and I stopped in on a weekday and were lucky to get seated right away. Several other parties came after us and filled almost all the tables in the front area. Most all had reservations, so I'd recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you know you want to eat here. I tried the full Ivy English breakfast and an English breakfast tea (when in London, right?) Everything was fine, but nothing was great or really stood out. It's a pretty heavy breakfast, which isn't a reflection of the restaurant - it just is. The prices were reasonable, and the decor is beautiful. The bathroom had a rose-covered ceiling - super cute. It'd say the service was subtle friendliness but sooo slow - on par with service throughout Europe. It definitely took getting used to as an American. read more

Cute little location of this popular chain that never feels like a chain. From the moment you walk in and meet the host who has a big personality and who just wants you to feel most welcome - you know you entered a neighborhood gem. I sat at the bar as I was dining alone for dinner and reviewed the lengthy menu of traditional British foods. They now feature a QR code where you can filter out any foods that may impact an allergy. GREAT TOOL and wish it featured more for those of us that simply won't eat meat, pork or chicken. The server wasn't knowledgeable enough to share that info which forced me to be at a loss so on one hand its a great tool and on the other, they need to train the servers a bit more. So many of their fish dishes apparently include chicken/pork/beef bases which is kinda gross. Chefs - please review this as it's 2025 and thats old school cooking. Service is top notch and the prices usually reflect. As much as I love dining here, I do find that the foods fall more on the very bland side which does follow most British cooking themes lol. I do not recall a more offensive time in a restaurant in my entire life. In full disclosure, I am an African-American travelling for business in London. The restaurant looks fun, with period specific decor. There is an intimate charm to the way the seating is arranged in the relatively small establishment. However, given the small space one would expect that the service would be prompt and that staff would be attentive to the needs of the customers as every table can be seen from any vantage point. Sadly, there could be nothing further from the truth! The service was atrocious, and without any regard for the needs of the customer. We can begin with the introduction where it took more than 15 minutes to have a drink order taken. The waiter did not return after an additional 10 minutes and when he did, he was not prepared to take starter or main orders. Throughout the evening, this pattern was repeated. On multiple occasions, we asked the server to replenish the drinks and order additional bottles of wine and in every circumstance we had to flag the server to address or remember our order. The food was miserable and painfully overcooked. The burger was so overdone it lacked any flavour at all. All members of the dinner party had addition negative comments on the quality, and service we were receiving. At the conclusion of the meal we waited again for the opportunity to place coffee and dessert menu items. This took so long that the manager offered to comp the desserts yet it took MORE THAN 30 minutes to have these items delivered. As we approached two hours and 45 minutes in the restaurant, we decided to take the check and leave . When the check was presented I offered payment with my American Express credit card. However, in front of my coworkers I was asked for identification to verify the name on the credit card. Please keep in mind that this was a party of 6+1 in a very crowded restaurant. In my entire adult life, I have never been carded for verification of ownership of a credit card. The reservation was in my name I was greeted by both first and last name. Despite my objections, the server refused to return my card without proof of identification! Admittedly, I was embarrassed and humiliated, as this was taking place only at my table. I promptly approached the maitre d' again and asked if they had a policy about verifying ID of customers who are paying with a credit card. The maitre d' himself was confused, and repeatedly stated that it was not a practice at the restaurant. It was increasingly obvious that I was being profiled as I was the only black man in the restaurant. I was furious! I asked to speak with the manager, and she immediately offered an apology and stated, without solicitation, or suggestion, that the server was not racist in any way. Again, I travel frequently outside the United States, and have never in my entire professional life been carded whilst paying for a meal for a group of coworkers! There is no doubt in my mind that this practice was overtly racist, and I was targeted by this restaurant, based on the colour of my skin! There is no explanation, there is no excuse for the treatment that I received. In actuality, it is very difficult to transcribe this review. My experience was both painful and humiliating. I want my experience shared and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, regardless of their colour. The treatment I received was entirely inexcusable and devoid of common decency. read more

Dropped by here for brunch. The interior is very pretty with a lot of stained glass and a large main room. Staff are dressed up and very polite. This Ivy Cafe gets very busy so would definitely recommend a reservation. Upscale, casual vibe, great ambiance. They have a pretty full menu with a lot of classic brunch options. Food here is alright, comes in large portions but seems somewhat boring and underseasoned. I got their version of the avocado toast which came somewhat light on avocado but had quite a bit of greens. The seared ahi tuna was an awful cut of tuna, with very tough meat. Overall a solid option, very stylish and probably won't let you down for a catch-up with friends. This was a lovely location. Stumbled upon it while walking around London. My friend and I were enjoying the shops in the area when we saw it standing out from the crowd. It was very busy and we didn't have reservations but they were kind enough to offer us a seat at the bar area. All the staff were very kind and diligent. My duck liver parfait was creamy and heavenly which the pear and ginger compote on top complimented well. The Shepherds Pie lived up to the raves I saw on Yelp. The serving portions were just perfect. Not too much and not too little. I saw some different orders at other tables and everything looked delicious. I went at 10:00 am on a Monday and there was no wait. Upon arrival I was seated immediately and was able to pick where I would like to sit. After getting my menu I placed my order with in two minutes I ordered a cappuccino, breakfast pastries and avocado with poached egg on top of English muffins with hollandaise sauce on the side. I was served my cappuccino in one minutes time after placing my order and then within two minutes received my order of food. The food was great and the cappuccino was delightful. We ate here and at the Ivy Market Grill on our trip. This location needs serious work to match the Market Grill location with their 5 stars across the board. Here, the food is outstanding 5 stars. Wine list exceptional 5 stars. Service? 1 star at best. Maitre d extremely friendly at entry and when we volunteered bed our displeasure with service. We sat over 45 minutes after dinner with empty glasses waiting on someone to offer dessert or coffee or additional drinks. Suits (assuming manager and other manager) talking in front of us at the bar and wouldn't acknowledge us. Restaurant had a Tokaji on dessert wine menu we really wanted to try but we gave up and finally waved our server down for the check. We don't enjoy leaving ratings like this, but feel it needs to be said for you to understand and decide accordingly. read more

Manager, not waiter, takes our order. Manager. Asks if I want cheese on my burger, I decline. A few moments later, Manager returns, confirms if I want cheese on my burger, I again decline. I ask Manager if I can have ketchup and mayo on the side when my food arrives, he tells me to ask the waiter when my food arrives, "to keep it fresh". I tell him I'll risk it so he agrees to bring before my food arrives. Burger arrives, of course, with cheese. Ketchup and mayo not brought over as promised. New waiter asks if they can just scrape off the cheese, an offer I decline. New burger arrives, 85% sure it was the same patty with cheese scraped off, but ignoring that, was completely overcooked. Ketchup and mayonnaise arrived in a timely fashion, after having to ask again - well done! Piss poor experience, especially compared with the High Street Ken location which I visit (and enjoy) very often. Wouldn't return. Oh, and the Bloody Mary was an over-tabasco'd under worchestered liquid shit. (which I drank in full, obviously). read more

I visited the Ivy Cafe twice in London the last time I was in the city. The first meal I had there was amazing! I ordered the chicken Milanese and my boyfriend had the shepards pie. The service was great, we had the meantime pilsner beers, our appetizers (he got the prawn cocktail and I got the Spinach and avocado salad both visits) were tasty, the restaurant itself is beautiful - it's decorated sort of like an old brasserie but everything is very clean! Our second visit for dinner a few nights later was OK. Our waitress was not as warm as the waitress we had on our first visit, and I ordered the fish and chips which was a huge mistake! My boyfriend got the chicken Milanese, which made me very jealous to watch him enjoy as I ate my smushy, bland fish. C'est la vie! I'd highly recommend this institution to anyone who would listen to me, but will order more thoughtfully on my next visit. read more

This is a truly beautiful cafe tucked away on a side street next to Marleybone High Street. I made a reservation the day of to take my parents here and I got lucky with an opening on a week night. Service is spot on and the atmosphere is quite lovely. It's definitely more posh than places I usually go but I never felt uncomfortable and the prices were quite reasonable considering how beautiful the place was and the location. The food was also very nice! I had the crab linguine- it was really light with minimal sauce. That's what I was hoping for. My husband had the salmon which he said was very good, and my parents enjoyed their roast chicken and fish cake. Ahhhh happy family. I had been struggling to find places to take my parents because they can be a bit picky on multiple levels, but they really enjoyed this place, and so did I. Win win WIN! read more

Food was good but service was extremely slow through out - there seemed to be plenty of staff around but they spent our whole dinner fawning over one table instead of serving us- we were joking about being invisible. Once we asked for the check, our server disappeared for another 20 minutes and we had to flag down another person for our check.
