My brother in law was encountered by one of the school staff and was verbally threatened that he would be tackled by one of them if he did not verbally identify themself. TKA is a solid, love-centered community and we feel at peace leaving our kids there from 8-3 and beyond. Because of the fantastic academics and the loving, experienced teachers, our older 3 students went on to have successful college careers, and are now professionals who are excelling in their work life. The school has a large variety of extracurricular activities that provide another type of fun & learning environment outside of the classroom. Have 2 high-schoolers here. Very strong academics from teachers who actually care about their students. Almost impossible to find anywhere else in the Bay Area. The sports and band are top-notch too--which really help to build cohesiveness and bonding among the students and staff. My son is diagnosed autistic (ASD-high functioning), and he was bullied and isolated by the other students relentlessly. The middle school principal tried helping us, but the teachers did nothing. They made the bullying worse by showing blatant favoritism among students. The teachers treat quiet students very poorly. One teacher, Miss Vo, even accused my child of doing something in science camp, which was proven false. It was a serious allegation, but she never contacted us to inform us about the incident and never apologized for her actions. I would not have known about the incident until I asked my son how the science camp went. I brought it up to the school admin, but there was no action. In short, this school has too much hypocrisy in claiming Christian traditions when their actions and students are anything but Christian. Our family has suffered so much. My son has developed anxiety, and we are still struggling. Some kids still bully him when they see him outside of school, even if he has transferred to a different school. I informed the current high school principal, Miss Lui, but she has yet to respond. DO NOT GO TO THIS SCHOOL IF YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO BE SAFE. The emphasis is on succeeding academically no matter the cost, even at the expense of others. Many students, including academic achievers, are spoiled, judgmental, and egotistic, and the school culture tolerates bullying behavior. My son just started the 6th grade and we are so pleased with how the school has dealt with reopening through this pandemic. The school has in place many protocols for safety. My son has felt safe and made new friends the first day of school. They are also the only school we know of that is using Webex. Which gives the students more of a classroom feel. The school is on a hybrid schedule one week at school - one week online. Families had the choice to continue school 100% virtually if they chose too. The staff has been great with keeping the parents in the loop, totally appreciate the Friday emails every week with upcoming events and school news. My son is also participating in the first virtual school play. That's so awesome for the kids who chose King's for their theater program. I highly recommend this school. read more

The most popular and incredible aspect of The King's Academy is, without a single doubt, the teachers. Being a college-preparatory academy, TKA desires extreme academic excellence. This could result in a strict relationship with staff but nothing could be further from the truth. When we first did the school tour, I knew this was it for my 2 sons. I saw teachers and staff who truly care, not just interested in the academics. The King's Academy is an amazing school. I have two boys who have been with TKA since the 6th and 7th grade. It was an adjustment for my boys going from a Montessori style of learning to what is expected, academically, from TKA. Being a college prep school, the school work can be quite demanding, but with the help from the teachers and after school programs, it has been an amazing ride for my boys. They have matured so much over the years and understand the value of having a great education. Even when there were those 'hiccup' moments, the teachers were always involved because their goal is to make sure your child succeeds. They expect you to do your best, and in return, they will do all they can to make sure you succeed. On the flip side, if you do not try, you will not be handed a free pass. Just like in life, you need to work to achieve success. I love this about TKA. The King's Academy is Christian school. Period. They follow the bible and do not deviate from what is written in it. Period. If you want a Christian school that 'ebbs and flows' with society and deviates from what the bible teaches, then TKA is not for you. There are other Christian or Catholic schools out there that may fit your criteria. My oldest just graduated this year, with honors, and is headed to CSUC this coming August to study Mechanical Engineering. My youngest still has a few more years before he graduates. Both my boys are succeeding because of The King's Academy and the foundation the school set for them. Being an involved parent is part of the journey and meeting the other involved parents is great! The relationships my boys have with their teachers and classmates have be invaluable. I am so happy to have found The King's Academy and the family feeling you get from the school. I went here from 7th grade until 12th grade, graduating in 2012. I don't recommend going here or sending your children here. Once I graduated & went to a large private university I realized how much I had to learn that TKA failed to teach me, and how much I needed to unlearn about how I viewed myself in relation to the world. It is a Christian school that teaches Christian values - but some very misguided and conservative ones at that, and more extreme than other Christian or Catholic schools in the area. Homophobia, Islamophobia, and racism are prevalent at this school, something I did not realize until I left and saw how different and welcoming the real world was to people of all backgrounds, religions, and orientations. Young girls are subject to a strict dress code & the idea that women are responsible for the actions of men by the way they dress is instilled deeply in our psyches from a young age. My freshman year of college we had a consent training during orientation & it took me so much longer than everyone else to wrap my head around the idea that no matter what a woman is wearing, she is never "asking for it." I credit TKA for that. Academically, this school is average - there are plenty of bright students and some good teachers, but the continued focus on Christianity means some teachers are unable to effectively teach subjects like science when it conflicts with what they interpret the Bible or their faith to say. Evolution was a single-day topic in bio and covered rapidly, while creation spanned multiple days. One of my teachers taught us that vaccines caused autism as part of his curriculum (not only incorrect, but a very fringe/conspiratorial opinion to be promoting in an institution of learning). From a sports perspective, TKA pretty much sucked. We didn't excel at many sports, although we did have some talented athletes who were stars. Facilities for sports at the school were lacking, as well as the aforementioned dress code that applied to activewear - female volleyball players were constantly told to change outfits from the standard spandex uniform that is worn across all schools for this sport, and female cross-country runners were told they had to keep their shirts on for practice even as the male runners took their shirts off an hour in. All in all, i wouldn't go back here and I definitely would not send my child here. This school damaged me and other alumni so much that alumni wrote an open letter to the school two weeks ago suggesting changes they can make to ensure the school is a better, more welcoming place for future students - the school still has not responded. read more

I have two kids in high school at TKA, and one in Jr High. This is our first year, and I love this school so much I could put a ring on it! I can't begin to explain how awesome it is, but suffice to say I could not be happier. One of my kids was still learning the ropes academically coming in, and is now a strong A/B student who happily studies and is self disciplined. This miracle turnaround happened in just two months at TKA, is 100% due to a combination of the culture and technique and motivation of the teachers, coupled with a well chosen mix of very kind children from families who value education and learning. When all the children in their circles care deeply about working hard at good grades, it creates an environment where everyone is raised up and motivated. There is a strong emphasis on health and well being. I am seeing self respect, self discipline and deep moral values growing stronger in each of my three kids. I spend 6 months researching every high school between San Francisco and San Jose, and we ended up at TKA in a somewhat circuitous path. If I knew then what I know now, it would have been my go to school from sixth grade on. The only reason I didn't send my kids here three years ago is that I was worried about the commute from San Carlos and all the logistics. I worried myself into a tizzy and as it turns out, there is a mechanism for carpooling from any where in the bay area and its not only convenient, its easier than I ever imagined. I'll report back as time goes on. We're three months in on our first year of probably seven years total. Its not perfect, (the campus is a bit rougher than I'd have wanted), but its wonderful in every way that matters. And we love it. Message me if you have any questions about this school. Update: We're almost finished with the school year and after spending an entire school year, the jury is no longer out: We are still delighted with the school and highly recommend it . We consider TKA as one of the best schools in the Bay Area, and we wouldn't consider sending our kids any where else. They've gone through a lot of growing pains over the past 10 years in adjusting the facilities and curriculum so that they provide one of the very finest educational experiences in America. Our daughter attended King's from 6th-12th grade and our son (currently a 9th grader) has attended since 6th grade. We've been very happy with not only the education that our kids are receiving but more importantly with their entire middle school/high school experience. Academics: King's is a college preparatory school- there is a high standard of academic excellence with a bonus of small classes. Graduates are prepared for college and this is exemplified with the schools that they are accepted to. From Ivy League to UC's to Private Schools to Community Colleges and everywhere in-between. If you're curious, here is a link that shows recent college acceptances/enrollment. There are, on average, 175 graduates which is significantly smaller than other private and public schools. King's is large enough to be competitive at their division/level with their sports, debate team, robotics team, choir competitions, marching band competitions, etc., etc. But, they are small enough that your child will actually get a chance to make the team or even try a new sport or new performing arts activity. I love this about King's. In our opinion, part of the Middle School and High School experience should be about trying new things. Diversity: Another total positive for us. Students at King's come from Morgan Hill to Scotts Valley to San Mateo... basically all over the Bay Area. Although it makes get togethers a little harder it does create a school that is diverse both economically (many families are on scholarships) and culturally. This is something we didn't see in some of the private school options. No school is perfect. But, we have never regretted our decision to send our kids to King's. And- each year our kids are saying they want to continue on which speaks volumes. read more

This review is for their theater and not the school! My dance company rented this theater for our dance show last weekend. We were able to rent the theater Friday night and Saturday. This theater is older then most I have performed in but it is spacious and the stage is big which was perfect for our group of 40 or so dancers. They also have two side screens and a white drape in the back of the stage to project images and video from if needed. The sound system is great and overall we were happy with the outcome. Even the staff working with us that weekend was laid back and cordial and easy to work with. My ONLY gripe about this place is the backstage/ green room area. It is one big room with no mirrors and cold concrete floor. If you are wanting to rent this theater for a future show be sure to bring mirrors and blankets to keep the room warm. The room is small so if you have a large cast, this is probably not the best location for you. Also once the show starts, there is no access to a bathroom unless you want to walk around the corner through the school which may or may not be convenient for you. A decent place to see a show and an okay place to perform at. I wouldn't mind coming back here but there are definitely other places I prefer over this one. read more

I sent my 4 sons here. Great school, great administrators, loving teachers, and spiritually and academically strong with great extracurricular sports, arts and music. If you want a Christian school that walks its talk spiritually, academically challenges its students, and offers the sports, drama, music and arts programs of larger high schools ( and at a reasonable cost) this is the place for you and your kids. And for the record, talk to their college counselors (Who personally take interest in your kids and help them find a good school) what schools graduates attend --- do Stanford, UCLA, Cal, USC, Notre Dame, Vassar, Bowdoin ring a bell. All 4 of my boys felt very well prepared for college and developed life friendships with ethnically and socially diverse friends. The pros: many of the teachers really do love the students and love The Lord. There are some very good teachers at TKA. The campus is larger than many private schools and its location is fairly convenient. The tuition is lower than many private schools, but you need to know that the stated tutition and the other fees ramp the actual payment up by another $2-3k/year. The cons: The students that come into TKA must pass a test that places them in the top 50% of performers, however by the 8th grade many of the students can not qualify for or can not pass the Algebra class. By contrast, in the public schools 30% of 8th graders do not pass Algebra in the 8th grade http://californiawatch.org/dailyreport/lacking-preparation-many-8th-graders-fail-algebra-8760 . Since TKA only admitts students that are in the top 50%, it seems reasonable to me that the Algebra pass rate for their 8th graders ought to be well into the 90th percentile. This is to say, they have a weak math department. Second, if you ask them how many of their graduates attend a UC, they will tell you that they encourage their students to attend the private colleges. If you press for information they will get angry and still not give you specific information about the colleges their students ultimately attend. Third: I am sorry to say that even though the school is an evangelical school and many of the teachers are evangelical, if you specifically ask the senior high administration about their view on homosexual relationships, their position is, "don't ask, don't tell". Fourth, if you will speak to any of the female parents in the junior high you will hear them tell you that if you have an issue you must send in a man to address the junior high administration. Ask someone, because you have to hear it for yourself. Fifth, they have really weird off-campus policies. They are the only organization that I know of that does not require a second adult to be present at off campus events. My daughter went on a school mandated summer trip and the administration insisted that no other adult attend because the teacher needed "bonding time" with the students. Granted, it was a mixed group of students, but it was really really weird that Kings wanted only this one male teacher to supervise an overnight trip....especially since there were about 8 parents who volunteered to go -- and pay their own way. Sixth: If you question the placement of your child in various classes or with various teachers, their response is always we must "trust God". God is often cited as a reason for not giving parents information. An example of this "God is always to be trusted" is last spring the school was taking students on a mission trip to Mexico. Some parents weren't comfortable sending their kids across the border, where there is an ongoing war and Americans are being kidnapped. If your kid wasn't going on the trip the administration called the parents and demanded the reason for holding the child back. The trip isn't quite as voluntary as they imply when you want to enroll. Seventh: This is the only school that I am aware of that parents are prohibited from attending board meetings. Eighth: Bullying is tolerated at TKA. My kids have been at 2 other private schools and I have not seen this happen. My kids weren't bullied, but our friends kids were, and the school will barely respond. They will tell you that they have a waiting list to get in, so if you want to leave you can. They will tell you that you can contact the other kids parents. But the school itself will not involve themselves in problems with bullys. It is odd, and again, I have never seen this happen before. Ninth: We left the school when my daughter started high school (age 14,). two male teachers sent her multiple friend requests. One of the teachers is someone she barely knew. I spoke with a couple of teachers about it and they told me that these men are harmless. I think it is really odd that a couple of guys that she barely knows want to just "chat" with a young girl. I think it is odd that teachers (who I like) at Kings think this is okay and nothing to be concerned about. She ignored the friend requests and 7 months later they were still sending the requests to chat. Finally: Less than half of their 8th grade stays at Kings for highschool, the vast majority of those who leave go to other private schools, very few leave for financial considerations. Was on a raining, I was sitting on the aluminum bench for over half hour, watching my son play soccer, a man approach behind me with sedition talk, demanding me to move and pushing me too. I was confuse and asked who he was, after that everything when from bad to worse to the point we almost fight. After practice, people approach to me e explained how the people around here are in the power trip and races, especial the coach. Our neighborhood schools are top ranked (API in 900s), but my daughter totally lost her confidence by 8th grade. She did not want to study, either dose off or doodling during classes. She stayed very late at night struggling with loads of homework and she cried almost every night, online video games were her only indulgence. The psychologist we consulted said my daughter had minor depression. My husband and I are both highly educated engineers, we taught our daughter good learning habit since kindergarten. Something was wrong with the previous school environment and we decided to change. After my daughter joining King's Academy, she totally changed. She is happy and re-gaining her confidence in learning. For the first time, we hear her has a dream of pursuing a good profession and helping people. She becomes very motivated and self-driven. The class room size is around 20 or lower, teachers give individual attention to each students, they welcome student to stop by during brunch/lunch hours to ask questions and hang out. This is a school that tries very hard to build positive relationship between teacher and student. Teachers are very encouraging and dedicated. It's like a heaven on earth. My husband and I give huge credits to the teachers and well-behaved, friendly student body. Teachers respond to parent's inquiry immediately, they go out of their way to work with parents to bring student back on track or make student excel. If you have a child that is struggling in a large 2000 students high school, send them to King's Academy, my daughter feel much more comfortable in a 900 (about 140 students per grade from 6th-12th) students campus. read more

TKA has been a fantastic school for our kids, and we really enjoy the community of teachers, parents, and coaches that love the students. Our kids both started in the 6th grade and we're now in our 9th year at the school. The school has developed significantly over that time, both academically and physically (facilities). There's a full complement of honors and AP classes that our kids took advantage of, which prepared them well for college. The annual service trips were an eye-opening experience for the kids and for us (parents are encouraged to go on the Mexico home construction trip). read more

Simply amazing! That's what I think of this school. My 3 children have attended for the past 2 almost 3 full school years and as of this year as a parent I've experienced every grade level. The teachers, staff and families are truly special and are the heart of what makes this my children's "second home". I feel like my children are treated well and fairly. The extracurricular options are diverse from practically every sport to theater, dance, art, choral, robotics team, debate, color guard, marching band, etc.. Impressive considering we're only a school just under 1000 students grades 6-12th. The teachers not only teach to the student's brain but also to their heart with an emphasis on inclusion and empathy. The grade level retreats and high school mission trips are truly special opportunities to bond with classmates and staff while focusing on developing a servant's heart. Two of my kids have graduated from TKA and one is still enrolled. Our family loves this school. The big differences between this school and any other we have been at or heard of are: 1) The teachers really care about Jesus and connecting students to him; 2) the teachers really care about the students and take a lot of time to be with them. It is not unusual for a teacher to take a group of students out to lunch, or to host an early morning bible study in their classroom. The teaching is excellent. TKA graduates go to all the top schools in the country and do well. The school also works hard at maintaining a family atmosphere. DON'T SEND YOUR KIDS HERE!! They are completely tolerant of bullying and tell you to figure it out on your own. They favor the football players and will always let them pass if it helps them. I went here from sixth grade until my freshman year. I started out a Christian but this school ironically turned me away from god. The way they handle touchy situations is extremely unprofessional. They do not allow kids to speak their minds and lash out if you speak against them. Basically the only way you can go to this school is if you play football, don't talk to anyone, and believe everything they want you to. I showed them hundreds of physical evidence of me getting bullied by someone and nothing happened at all!! Later I came across a case of a football player pressuring a girl to do things and brought it to their attention and again nothing was done. I have now left this horrible place, but I just found out that same football player made false accusations against another good student and that student was expelled off his words. This place is unjust, unprofessional, and not very accepting of other religions or sexualities. I seriously recommend you go somewhere else. read more

I went to TKA for all 4 years of high school, and absolutely loved it. It got me out of the horrible, violent, gang controlled, drug infested public schools that I hated so much. The education was great, and i made many friendships for a lifetime. TKA has many fantastic teachers that love the students like their own children. Also, the school does so many cool things for the kids each year, like Woodleaf, Mexico mission trips, class retreats, and the Senior class retreat was the time of my life. If I am still living in this area when I have kids, I am definitely sending them here. read more

My son attends middle school here. He came from a private elementary school and has found the academics to be strong. The teachers here are amazingly nurturing and very responsive to parent questions. They usually respond to emails within hours. We have noticed that they do not tolerate bullying or any other poor behavior. They are very proactive in handling behavior problems. The class size is small, around 20. My children graduated from TKA in 2010 and 2013. I have always loved this school. As my children get older and I reflect back on the times at TKA I can only say that the respect that I have for this school and the individuals who make it their life mission to make a difference in the lives of their students, grows each year. My children were well-prepared for college both socially and academically. They have grown into fine young adults and I attribute so much of this to the people at TKA who invested in them. After a year here, I can say quite a few things about this school, many positive, some not. The environment is nurturing, chapel is spiritual; a strong christian community and feel in general. The service trip and yearly retreats are a great experience and can change you. However, the academics are lacking. As an advanced student, I found myself without challenges and extracurriculars. The clubs and organizations that so often define our high school experiences just aren't here. The most I saw were language clubs, drama, and an upperclassmen/junior high mentoring club. The involvement and rigor that colleges look for in applicants simply isn't there. As for AP classes and exams, the school only offers 9 out of 35+, and only upperclassmen can take them (up to 2 instead of the average of 3/4 at my current school). AP's aside, the honors courses don't provide enough of a challenge and are easy compared to many high schools in the area. I had friends in surrounding schools who learned much more in the regular version of the course than I did in honors. Overall, the school cares about its students and God, but academics hold them back from being accepted into competitive colleges and being well rounded. (I no longer attend this school) read more
